AIBU to say that this meal is *not* a gravy meal

Made shepherd’s pie this evening. Was serving it (with green beans in butter) and DH said “I’ll just make myself some gravy”

AIBU to think that made-from-scratch shepherd’s pie, with its built-in gravy, does not require added bistro? Is this my LTB moment or is that ketchup?

My husband would do something worse to that meal than Bisto. He'd drench it in brown sauce and add two slices of bread and butter so he can make a dinner sandwich.
Sometimes I can't believe I've married such an animal.

Notlong20 · 10/03/2020 22:00

@pollysproggle I made sausage and mash today and instead of gravy, mine put ketchup and mustard on it and ate it with bread Confused

FairNotFair · 10/03/2020 22:00

The word "gravy" is starting to look weird

Gravy, gravy, gravy

Gravy

LoonyLunaLoo · 10/03/2020 22:03

Gravy is definitely required.

newbingepisodes · 10/03/2020 22:04

Omg always gravy on shepherds pie!

TheBigFatMermaid · 10/03/2020 22:05

It's a definite gravy meal. Also, at least three vegetables on the side. They need the gravy to cover them.

lynsey91 · 10/03/2020 22:12

I really don't like gravy and luckily neither does DH. We don't have it on any meals.

I don't get why you have food that should be crisp like roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding and then you pour gravy on it which makes it go soggy.

The worst though is gravy on chips. That is just disgusting

georgialondon · 10/03/2020 22:16

Of course it's a gravy meal!

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 10/03/2020 22:19

Gravy on chips is food of the gods! See also curry sauce.

Must confess I’ve never had gravy with shepherds pie tho (or cottage pie for that matter) I now want to try it.

I’ll draw the line at mayo or yogurt tho. Might try beans on the side

cheesemongery · 10/03/2020 22:21

Definitely cheese on top and under the grill.

I'd want more gravy if my pie wasn't sloppy enough - otherwise it's mash n mince (dry!).

Baked beans in a cottage pie, not in a shepherds pie.

Oooh def mint sauce as just mentioned with a shepherds'!

lottiegarbanzo · 10/03/2020 22:23

You are neither U nor NU. Neither is he. It's a matter of taste.

Ketchup would indeed be LTB territory.

cheesemongery · 10/03/2020 22:23

I had macaroni cheese with gravy in Barbados it was amazing! Although to be fair, it wasn't your average gravy. Spicy meat juicy, thick and mmm.... hungry now pffft.

emmylousings · 10/03/2020 22:28

Sometimes, in a rush I dish it up without gravy and I always think afterwards - agh, it needed gravy. I guess you just need to do two pans (of onion) when you get the mince going at the outset?! Plus, if you are boiling carotts you can put the carott water in your gravy for extra nutrients and flavour.

Tempuserregularposter · 10/03/2020 22:30

@FairNotFair agree, it's weird when a word loses meaning, especially weird when your name loses meaning

MyBlueMoonbeam · 10/03/2020 22:30

Okay @MyBlueMoonbeam*
Wasn’t patronising. Wasn’t snobby.
You seem very invested in gravy substitute.
I have better things to do so shan’t be replying to you again*

Good 🙄

emmylousings · 10/03/2020 22:31

Cheese on top - finished under the grill is essential. Yum, looks great and adds lovely crunch.
What is LTB territory?

DontBe · 10/03/2020 22:39

Chips and gravy is amazing.

shinynewapple2020 · 10/03/2020 22:44

Of course it needs gravy Hmm

Hadenoughofitall441 · 10/03/2020 22:44

My kids always have added gravy, thier dad is from the midlands so has gravy with most things 😂

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/03/2020 22:49

Leave the butter off the green beans and whack on the gravy.

Job done!

AnotherMurkyDay · 10/03/2020 23:42

Shepherds pie I would serve with veg and Yorkshire pudding so yes there would need to be gravy for the Yorkshire's and veg, but unless it was dry I wouldn't put it on the actual pie.

I think it's the only potato topped pie I make that I don't bake with cheese on top, and I don't usually combine cheese and gravy on the same plate.

If I ever have cauliflower cheese with a roast dinner I keep it on a side plate.

kateandme · 10/03/2020 23:47

and horeradish

JellyfishandShells · 11/03/2020 01:01

Never occurred to me to serve additional gravy with shepherds pie - and especially not that instant gravy muck. Ugh. All it needs is peas on the side.

NeckPainChairSearch · 11/03/2020 02:05

I confess that I'm not really an enormous fan of either, but I can't really compare homemade gravy from a roasting pan, with herbs, wine, spices etc., with a few tablespoons of Bisto and boiling water.

It's a bit like comparing a piece of Roquefort and a processed cheese slice. I'm sure there's a place for both, but they're worlds apart.

theThreeofWeevils · 11/03/2020 02:33

Some serious and unresolved weaning issues on this thread. Envy
NO additional 'gravy' needed for either shepherd's or cottage pie. But then it does help if the filling is made and let get completely cold, and the mashed potato ditto. Put them together cold and you get much less up-sog. Oh, and seal the mashed potato properly to the edge of the dish.
