AIBU to say that this meal is *not* a gravy meal

Made shepherd’s pie this evening. Was serving it (with green beans in butter) and DH said “I’ll just make myself some gravy”

AIBU to think that made-from-scratch shepherd’s pie, with its built-in gravy, does not require added bistro? Is this my LTB moment or is that ketchup?

@cardibach I'm well able to make "proper gravy" thanks - I like Bisto & I'm not apologising for it 🤷‍♀️

cardibach · 10/03/2020 21:28

@MyBlueMoonbeam where do I say you couldn’t? Very odd response.
Bisto still makes me ill. I’m not apologising for it.
See how odd that looks?

overnightangel · 10/03/2020 21:29

“ Sorry I agree with DH. I know the pie has it's in built gravy but it's never enough to pour over the rest of the meal.”

No more need be said

Apirateslifeforme · 10/03/2020 21:31

More gravy for shepherds pie.
But there is far more wrong with this thread than you being so U. There are actual tomato saucey shepherds pie eaters here. Fucking heathens!@ they're the real U ones here!

TotesGodsWill · 10/03/2020 21:35

No such thing as too much gravy!

00deed1988 · 10/03/2020 21:35

YABU...gravy every time!

Skisunsnow · 10/03/2020 21:36

Grated cheese on top, Heinz baked beans as an accompaniment, and extra gravy. Yum!

MyBlueMoonbeam · 10/03/2020 21:37

Putting wine in it is a waste of wine. Make some proper gravy!

@cardibach

See how patronising this sounds?

Enough please

Lynda07 · 10/03/2020 21:38

avacadoes, some people put grated cheese on top or in the mash. It's nob obligatory.

Lynda07 · 10/03/2020 21:39

Oh and I put red wine in gravy very often - not always. White wine with poultry. Meat juices are the best though.

avocadoze · 10/03/2020 21:41

I put cheese on my fish pie. Just not shepherd’s pie. But I might try it. I like to put butter and cream into the mash, but cheese could be excellent too.

I would have gravy

Leflic · 10/03/2020 21:43

No gravy. Sloppy underneath, crispy top. Nice green veg. Done.

Shepard's pie and cottage pie to me arent even pies, a pie has pastry.
.....
What about key lime pie?

PuppyMonkey · 10/03/2020 21:46

I loathe gravy on anything. I know I’m in the minority (due to a previous thread I started in this), but I am right and everyone else is wrong.Grin

Why? Why do people like to ruin nice food by pouring loads of liquid on so that everything goes all soggy and mushy and all the food tastes of bland brown meat?

PorpentinaScamander · 10/03/2020 21:47

This thread has made me realise ive never made 'real' gravy. Only ever instant. I dont even know how to make gravy. Do I have to hand in my MN membership?

Although I don't put gravy (the instant stuff) in my shepherds* pie. It has beef stock and Worcestershire sauce in.

*technically cottage pie but we always called it shepherds growing up.

ch3rrycola · 10/03/2020 21:48

I'd have gravy and ketchup on it

cardibach · 10/03/2020 21:50

Okay @MyBlueMoonbeam
Wasn’t patronising. Wasn’t snobby.
You seem very invested in gravy substitute.
I have better things to do so shan’t be replying to you again.

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 10/03/2020 21:50

I always add gravy to shepherds pie. How can you not? Hmm

Tempuserregularposter · 10/03/2020 21:53

Stilton and cheddar in the mash, salad cream and then baked beans or gravy.

PondLover · 10/03/2020 21:53

Yy, @PuppyMonkey.

Gravy is a disgusting English perversion. Anything that ‘needs gravy’ has something horrifically wrong with it.

loutypips · 10/03/2020 21:53

There's no such thing as not enough gravy. Mash needs gravy.

PondLover · 10/03/2020 21:54

Unless you have ill -fitting dentures or something, and can only eat slop.

JennyWreny · 10/03/2020 21:56

Errr. Gravy AND mint sauce.

jmh740 · 10/03/2020 21:56

I'm northern every meal is improved by some gravy.
