AIBU to say that this meal is *not* a gravy meal

Made shepherd’s pie this evening. Was serving it (with green beans in butter) and DH said “I’ll just make myself some gravy”

AIBU to think that made-from-scratch shepherd’s pie, with its built-in gravy, does not require added bistro? Is this my LTB moment or is that ketchup?

Depends on how dry the mince is when you made the pie.
Always make gravy just in case.
Some folk like it dry enough to stand up on itself, some folk like it moist and splattery.

Criminal!!! Need gravy with shepherds pie!!!

OchAyeThaNoo · 10/03/2020 20:22

Needs gravy. And the gravy must be made with the excess juices and water from the mince cooking. Sorry. It's the law.

MrsT1405 · 10/03/2020 20:22

Gravy and Tommy K.

ByeMF · 10/03/2020 20:23

You can't have too much gravy. Baked beans = wrong. Ketchup = wrong (unless you're 7). Gravy just makes life better.

onionface · 10/03/2020 20:23

Shepherd's pie does not need gravy, especially not instant gravy. YANBU. It'd be like putting ketchup on a lasagne.

HeresMe · 10/03/2020 20:24

Am I a bad person as I don't just go for gravy I also go for brown sauce too.

CheddarGorgeous · 10/03/2020 20:24

Mary Berry recipe in her Aga cook book stipulates gravy (not bisto). We had it tonight.

MadameMeursault · 10/03/2020 20:24

Definitely no gravy on the pie. But gravy on the veg that goes with it 😊

20viona · 10/03/2020 20:25

I like it with gravy and Yorkshire puds! Fill them with pie and gravy yum.

TheoriginalLEM · 10/03/2020 20:25

My DP has baked beans with shepherds pie Envy I know right

Flixsfoilball · 10/03/2020 20:25

YABU gravy is a must

AdoptAdaptImprove · 10/03/2020 20:26

I’ll sometimes make a bit of gravy to go on the green veg I serve with mine, but that’s because I don’t make it overly saucy to start with, so that the mash doesn’t go soggy.

SquigglePigs · 10/03/2020 20:27

Definitely need more gravy.

PixieDustt · 10/03/2020 20:27

I always add gravy on top!

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 10/03/2020 20:27

I pour our mince straight from the pan and top with potato so the dish is so full of gravy it’s moist and so we get a nice crunchy top.
DM always used to strain the mince into a dish with a slotted spoon before putting mash on, so made gravy with with everything left in the pan to pour over after it was served.
So, I can understand the “it needs gravy” way of thinking if you have always had gravy poured over the top BUT I can also under stand the “it doesn’t need gravy” way of thinking because it’s all in there already.

Personal preference. If I made it one way & DH preferred the other I would accommodate & vice versa tbh.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 10/03/2020 20:28

Yabu. Gravy!

Ketchup also would not go amiss.

DameBurleyChassis · 10/03/2020 20:29

I’ll maybe make gravy to go over whatever veg I’m having with it as I also don’t like to make the cottage pie itself too saucy to prevent the mash from sinking (although letting the mince cool before topping with the mash helps with this problem).

I love HP with cottage pie.

No beans. Just no.

QueenOfThorns · 10/03/2020 20:30

@hoxtonbabe yes, he mixes it in. It looks revolting Sad

Butterwhy · 10/03/2020 20:30

A shepherds pie without gravy can't even be called a meal. A dry combo of foods lacking in the brown liquid gold would be more accurate.

MadameMeursault · 10/03/2020 20:30

YABU to put butter on your green beans!

justasking111 · 10/03/2020 20:31

I am a gravy nut, always ask for extra in restaurants. OH makes a gorgeous shepherds pie which is so moist/sloppy I do not need gravy with it.

Giggorata · 10/03/2020 20:32

Gravy.
That is all.

purplecorkheart · 10/03/2020 20:34

I love gravy so I am not a person to judge someone's use of gravy. I have been known drink entirely homemade gravy as mug of soup.

notangelinajolie · 10/03/2020 20:35

I'm a Cottage Pie person. But same principal - gravy built in and served with lots black pepper and ketchup. I have made extra gravy if the built in gravy has dried up but that's only happened a couple of times in over 30 years of making it.
