AIBU to say that this meal is *not* a gravy meal

Made shepherd’s pie this evening. Was serving it (with green beans in butter) and DH said “I’ll just make myself some gravy”

AIBU to think that made-from-scratch shepherd’s pie, with its built-in gravy, does not require added bistro? Is this my LTB moment or is that ketchup?

YABU.

Extra gravy made from powder Bisto. Because 'dems da rools'.

As is eating the crispy edged leftovers next day straight from the Pyrex dish it was born in.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2020 03:45

What about key lime pie?

It's a tart, and so is pumpkin pie.
Both are sturdy indefensibles.

ZombieFan · 11/03/2020 03:53

seriously you cant have shepherd’s pie without gravy

sashh · 11/03/2020 04:41

This is why when you are cooking the mince you put too much water in and use a slotted spoon to put the mince and 1/2 the gravy in the dish.

hellolittlebaby · 11/03/2020 04:45

I'd have extra gravy and ketchup

maddiemookins16mum · 11/03/2020 05:40

An incorrectly made SP can be pretty dry actually, so sometimes gravy is needed. I give you exhibit A: I had some extra gravy with this.

No meal is a gravy meal!

mumto2teenagers · 11/03/2020 05:43

I usually have gravy with shepherds pie.

DH has ketchup which is obviously weird.

Aethelthryth · 11/03/2020 05:56

Bisto is vile.

Shepherd's pie should not need gravy, nor should the vegetables, which should be buttered and seasoned.

If I have gravy left over from a roast I freeze it to add to shepherd's pie filling

Graciebobcat · 11/03/2020 06:04

YABU. I always struggled to get the liquid content right in a Shepherd's pie- too much gravy with the mince and the potatoes sink into it. Too much water in the potatoes and they don't crisp up properly.

The key is a slightly drier pie, and separate gravy.

HaveAtEm · 11/03/2020 06:09

Of course it needs gravy! I'd be hung, drawn and quartered if I ever served Shepherd's Pie with no extra gravy!

Enchiladas · 11/03/2020 06:14

I want chips and gravy now Sad

OrangeLola · 11/03/2020 06:31

DH is being unreasonable. Shepherds Pie is always served with Heinz spaghetti and HP sauce.

CorianderLord · 11/03/2020 06:53

I hate shepherds pie but the flavours go fine with gravy if that's what he wants. Stop being offended by someone's food preferences

BigMamaFratelli · 11/03/2020 07:09

I'd have it with gravy and Hendo's

AhoyMrBeaver · 11/03/2020 07:41

I'd have it with gravy and Hendo's

Ooh, now you're talking 😊

MintyMabel · 11/03/2020 07:44

Of course SP has extra gravy served. The mince needs to be drier than usual otherwise it becomes a sloppy mess when cooking.

I can't cook for people who pour hot sauce, gravy or ketchup over food I have lovingly prepared from scratch.

Find it hard to understand different people have different tastes huh? How controlling to suggest people MUST eat what you have prepared.

differentnameforthis · 11/03/2020 08:30

Definitely gravy!!

ineedaholidaynow · 11/03/2020 08:31

Do people add gravy as they have extra vegetables on the side? I tend to make cottage pie not shepherds pie, but all the vegetables go in with the meat, apart from the leeks that are mixed with the potato, so don't serve it with sides.

lynsey91 · 11/03/2020 09:50

It's getting worse - gravy on veg! Yuk yuk yuk.

Chips need to be eaten with nothing on at all certainly not gravy, mushy peas or curry sauce. They should be crisp and stay crisp. Home made really not the soggy chip shop ones

BigFatLiar · 11/03/2020 10:23

Needs extra gravy and a slice (or two) of bread to soak it up.

thefemalelemur · 11/03/2020 13:47

Definitely need a bit of extra gravy.
