AIBU to say that this meal is *not* a gravy meal

Made shepherd’s pie this evening. Was serving it (with green beans in butter) and DH said “I’ll just make myself some gravy”

AIBU to think that made-from-scratch shepherd’s pie, with its built-in gravy, does not require added bistro? Is this my LTB moment or is that ketchup?

Cottage pie needs gravy because I make mine with onion, carrots, celery, mince, tomato purée and beef stock pot. Some chopped parsley and seasoning. Cook out then top with potato.

I'm not a huge fan of pilots of plain mash... I need extra gravy with shepherd pie, it's personal preference and not an insult to your cooking. I'd also add a pile of black pepper before tasting much to DM's disgust but I know I like things more peppery than anyone makes it

MrsKoala · 10/03/2020 21:03

If it has baked beans as an accompaniment then it can't have gravy, if it has baked beans in the lamb mince then it's only fit for the bin. I'm not even sure I could have baked beans as an accompaniment to lamb. Cottage pie maybe, but shepherds pie I don't think so.

Leeks fried in butter layered over the mash topped with cheese and browned, then with gravy poured over is lovely and a side of some leafy greens.

Definitely extra gravy, and re the mentions of brown sauce upthread, I'd recommend mixing the brown sauce (preferably HP), into the gravy! Something my gran always did!

LadyShrek2k19 · 10/03/2020 21:05

I once took a Chinese takeaway to my in laws and MIL made gravy to go with it....

gavisconismyfriend · 10/03/2020 21:05

Brown sauce!

Candlesmakescents · 10/03/2020 21:06

Gravy, beans, cheese and ketchup.
I massively condiment all my foods though, including gravy of lasagne.

Thevoice2019 · 10/03/2020 21:06

I have been known to have gravy, baked beans and ketchup with Shepard’s pie. To be fair I have ketchup on everything inc roast dinner and curry.

Candlesmakescents · 10/03/2020 21:06

On lasagne not of

Cakeandmarshmallows · 10/03/2020 21:06

No to gravy but yes to HP brown sauce!! Glad to read on this thread that I'm not the only one who does this!

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 10/03/2020 21:08

MitziK · 10/03/2020 21:09

A subtle way of saying your meal was too dry, perhaps?

loulou0987 · 10/03/2020 21:09

HP sauce with shepherds pie Grin

renegadeoffunk · 10/03/2020 21:10

Gravy is absolutely vile stuff and should be banned.

OhhhPeee · 10/03/2020 21:12

I’m sensing a north-south divide in your relationship. Up here, the question is not “what’s for tea?” but “what are we having with our gravy tonight?” I’m considering getting a gravy tap in my kitchen. GO GRAVY!

GinnyWeasleysQuiff · 10/03/2020 21:12

I'm happy with the gravy that the meat is cooked in........I do make extra gravy for my H and DC's though

Tellingitlikeitisnt · 10/03/2020 21:13

Is Bisto best really so bad?

Only, if you want a quick gravy to go with a meal where making a scratch gravy wasn’t possible- where do you get your gravy from?

Obviously asking for a friend.

MrsKoala · 10/03/2020 21:13

I have Cypriot friends and relatives who have yogurt on it, and on their roast dinners.

Elieza · 10/03/2020 21:15

I’m firmly in the HP sauce camp on this one. Grin

themueslicamel · 10/03/2020 21:16

I would go not only with extra gravy, but onion gravy 🧅

legalseagull · 10/03/2020 21:20

Ie literally just had home made cottage pie - with gravy

QueSera · 10/03/2020 21:23

Yes to all the gravy possible!

avocadoze · 10/03/2020 21:25

cheese? Is there a cheese belt as well as a gravy belt? I put Worcestershire sauce in, and a spoon of English mustard in the mash along with salt and pepper but cheese? Cheese? 😮

Madam, you are a heathen. One can never have too much gravy on one’s shepherd’s pie. A dry, gravy-less shepherd’s pie is a sad, sorry sight to behold, and an even sadder thing to eat.
