AIBU to say that this meal is *not* a gravy meal

Made shepherd’s pie this evening. Was serving it (with green beans in butter) and DH said “I’ll just make myself some gravy”

AIBU to think that made-from-scratch shepherd’s pie, with its built-in gravy, does not require added bistro? Is this my LTB moment or is that ketchup?

OP posts:

Bisto (or even 'added bistro') isn't proper gravy anyway. It's glop.
Just saying.

MrsKoala · 10/03/2020 20:37

YABU Shepherds/cottage pie is dry without gravy. The gravy needs to be poured on top of the mash, if the under bit had the appropriate amount of moisture the mash would sink in so you need to make it separate and pour it on the top after its cooked.

My mum did a spicy version called Keema pie the other day and I just kept thinking this is so dry and needs gravy.

Mmm - we used to have shepherds beano at school and I loved it!

But getting back to the main point - my gut instinct is to totally agree with OP; before I met DH I never added gravy (Bisto!) to meat pies, shepherd's pie, etc etc. I'm not a massive fan of soaking wet meals (except roasts) and he always used to moan.

20 years on, DD is like me, but DS loves his gravy. I gave up years ago - if DH and DS want some instant bisto rubbish to make their meals wetter then it doesn't take long. But I'm the one who makes it - OP's DH at least does it himself.....Grin.

It’s just wrong to put instant gravy powder stuff (sorry but that’s just not real gravy) on anything home made ever. The only true purpose of instant gravy is to hide the taste of cheap pub roast/similar culinary animations.

PerpendicularVincent · 10/03/2020 20:39

It needs a bucket of onion gravy. YABVVVU

myidentitymycrisis · 10/03/2020 20:39

The way I cook the mince always seems to create an amount of liquid. When I put the mince into the oven dish I leave just enough so that its moist. Then i keep the rest of the juice, and make it into a bistro gravy to serve alongside.

DailyKegelReminder · 10/03/2020 20:39

YA both BU. Its served with ketchup here and cheese

NeckPainChairSearch · 10/03/2020 20:40

Bisto is not gravy. Shepherds Pie does not require gravy

This kind of deals with it.

WallyDancre · 10/03/2020 20:40

I’ll maybe make gravy to go over whatever veg I’m having with it as I also don’t like to make the cottage pie itself too saucy to prevent the mash from sinking (although letting the mince cool before topping with the mash helps with this problem).

When did cottage pie (made with minced beef) creep into this discussion? The original post was about shepherd's pie (made with miced lamb).

Both need gravy, but obviously the gravy will be slightly different for each.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/03/2020 20:41

Er, wait a minute. How on earth has no-one picked up on some of the abominations that were mentioned upthread?

Beetroot?
Cheese?
Salad?
Salad cream?
Mayonnaise?

Yuck. Shepherd's pie definitely needs extra gravy. Bisto best is absolutely fine. Green beans, cabbage, sprouts, broccoli on the side, baked beans in the mince mix, optional, or on the outside instead of the green veg.

Oysterbabe · 10/03/2020 20:42

You're wrong I'm afraid.

EricaNernie · 10/03/2020 20:42

i dont know how to vote
i would like extra gravy but I may be too scared to make it.

Welshmaenad · 10/03/2020 20:42

Every meal can be a gravy meal if you work hard and apply yourself.

Lynda07 · 10/03/2020 20:49

I don't know about bistro but agree with your husband that it is nice to have some gravy with it. The bit the mince and onions is cooked in is not sufficient, it's usual to add something (seasoning, stock cube or whatever), to the pan after taking the minced lamb out to make gravy. Same with cottage pie only that's minced beef.

ImportantWater · 10/03/2020 20:50

You have it with gravy and veg the first time
Then the leftovers for lunch with baked beans the next day
I am talking cottage pie though, I prefer beef to lamb.

SabineUndine · 10/03/2020 20:53

I don't make extra gravy cos I have HP sauce on mine.

DailyKegelReminder · 10/03/2020 20:54

I have cheese and ketchup up on both shepherds pie and cottage pie. Fun fact for you all.

DontBe · 10/03/2020 20:56

I don’t like shepherds pie as I don’t like lamb.

However I eat cottage pie with ketchup.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 10/03/2020 20:57

So many heavy snobs on here 🙄 I love Bisto - make with the veg water & some red wine

cardibach · 10/03/2020 20:57

Added gravy is always welcome.
Added Bisto is never welcome.
You are both wrong.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 10/03/2020 20:57

Heavy 😅 gravy

Nanalisa60 · 10/03/2020 20:57

I always but cheddar cheese on top of mine , don’t think it needs grave

cardibach · 10/03/2020 20:58

@MyBlueMoonbeam it isn’t snobbery. Bisto makes me feel ill. It tastes of chemicals and I feel slightly sick op for several hours after. Putting wine in it is a waste of wine. Make some proper gravy!

RainbowMum11 · 10/03/2020 20:58

Always gravy with shepherds pie!

cardibach · 10/03/2020 20:58

Don’t know where that op came from
