to ask them not to bring their dog?

We have friends due to stay with us in a fortnight. It was planned a long time ago, and they've just dropped a text to us which includes the sentence "and we will be bringing our dog". I'd forgotten that they recently got a puppy.

The idea of the dog coming is really stressing me out. We've just had new carpets fitted and laminate through the house, and I am also quite nervous of animals. We are not really a pet-loving family (I like animals, just not close around me). My daughter also screams and gets very anxious when dogs come near her.

When my brother brings his dog for a day, they bring his cage and he spends time in there and also out in the garden. My daughter won't be in the room (or garden) if he's out of the cage. However, as they are staying for a long weekend, I think it's unreasonable to expect a puppy to stay in a cage and probably not practical.

My brother says he never just brings his dogs round to people's homes, without checking with them first. They live near relatives, so perhaps a relative could look after it? I'm unsure how to approach this?

@Nettie1964 It's completely normal and natural for a child to be scared of dogs. Not sure why something so natural, so normal, is a 'pain'? Maybe you just don't understand children, so you're the one being the pain?

Mittens030869 · 14/03/2020 12:00

@TealWater That's so true. Why aren't children considered a pain if their phobia is of spiders or wasps? I get terrified whenever a wasp buzzed around my food when we're having a picnic, which means that I don't really like picnics. Does that make me a 'pain'? My DDs are terrified of spiders and scream until they've been removed. (My DH and I aren't afraid of them so they didn't learn it from us.

A fear of dogs as a child isn't irrational, as a lot of dogs are as big as they are. My DDs were afraid of dogs but they grew out of it and now would like a puppy. (Not going to happen with 3 cats and DH's allergy). Grin

Horrendously rude of them to assume it's ok. Tell them straight & don't feel bad about it.

AdobeWanKenobi · 14/03/2020 12:53

Tell them straight & don't feel bad about it.

This was resolved nearly a week ago....

Jane2357 · 16/03/2020 11:28

Remember that dog owners are very unreliable witnesses to how well their dog behaves. Tell them that if their puppy comes, he will need to stay in his cage or outdoors. Explain the reasons as politely as you can. If they don't understand then too bad for them.

AdobeWanKenobi · 16/03/2020 11:47

@Jane2357

Go on, treat yourself. Read the thread........

rayoflightboy · 16/03/2020 12:01

Doesnt matter anyway,CoronaVirus means they probably wont be travelling anyway.

contentedsoul · 16/03/2020 13:25

I would definitely say No to the dog.
Their dog, their problem.
If they wanted to get arsey, I’d use the corona virus to cancel.

Either way, the dog wouldn’t be coming. End of.

AdobeWanKenobi · 16/03/2020 13:49

Does anyone read fucking threads round here these days?

Hmm
contentedsoul · 16/03/2020 14:26

All those saying read the thread- clearly have fuck all to do all day except of course - reading fucking threads.
Amazingly, unbelievably and astoundingly....some of work!!

Who’d ‘have thought....

contentedsoul · 16/03/2020 14:28

us

AdobeWanKenobi · 16/03/2020 14:33

Or, they have the OP's posts highlighted and can scroll in about 30 seconds to see it was resolved a week ago.

Or they started reading it when it was first posted

Who'd have thought...

Windyatthebeach · 16/03/2020 14:45

Have I missed something? Read that they are booking to stay elsewhere with dpuppy...
Hasn't been concluded if dpuppy is included in day time visits though?
Confused

Actually quite a lot of us aren't well, like me. Hardly surprising, is it, since we're in the middle of a pandemic? Others are self isolating and are spending more time than usual reading threads.

But that said, I agree that it's hardly a hardship to see when an answer to the OP's question is no longer required.

Mittens030869 · 16/03/2020 14:47

@Windyatthebeach No we don't know, because the OP hasn't been back to the thread. Maybe the friends decided not to come because they couldn't leave their puppy?

79Beastie · 18/03/2020 01:06

No you are not being unreasonable to not want the puppy staying at your house. I think your friends are out of order by arranging a visit and then expecting its OK to bring a puppy without asking and just telling you. Your daughter is not comfortable with dogs so you must tell them that they should make other arrangements for the dog. Your daughters feelings come first. I understand exactly why you don't want the puppy because of your new carpet n floors. I looked after my nephews dog for 2 weeks (should have only been one week but the workmen made it a bigger job) while he had some work done on his flat. Let me tell you, it was the hardest 2 ever, I hardly sat down as I was on edge all the time. Lovely puppy (4 months old) but it was a little shyte, even though I put down the training mats, he missed them most times and the wee went all over the lamenate floor. He also pood everywhere. He cocked his leg up and weed up my sofa, on the TV unit, twice on my carpet. This was after I was told he wees and poos on the mat. He also shredded a pair of slippers, put a hole in some clean laundry, scratched a hole I'm my dogs bed and ripped the stuffing out of it and that's only half of it. If I'd have known it was going to be 2 weeks of hell I would definitely not have agreed to it, you have a choice at the mo, tell them no and don't feel guilty. Your daughters feelings come first.

Astrabees · 18/03/2020 10:18

Has anyone posting now actually read the thread!!!! the problem has bee resolved.

Windyatthebeach · 18/03/2020 10:37

Astrabees how is it resolved? Not actually sleeping there does not mean cf won't assumes day time visits will include dpuppy.. Presume op does not want piss /poo at any time on her new carpets...
