What 3 days would you pick to work part time?

I'm leaning towards Mon, Tue & Wed, as it would be nice to keep the weekend long.

But would it be better to break it up, have a day off midweek?

What pattern do you do if you are part time?

Two days, one day break, then another day in.
So mon, tue, thu; or tue, weds, fri.

That worked well with kids.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 05/03/2020 21:16

@AnneLovesGilbert people get very confused over this, that’s only the case of your employee has chosen to include BH as part of your annual leave entitlement, I’ve only ever worked one place that do this the rest it was 20/25 days + BH with the BH taken on the actual days.

ultrablue · 05/03/2020 21:16

Work consecutive days if you can. I have to do Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat in my job and I hate not getting two consecutive days off unless I book annual leave

BakewellGin1 · 05/03/2020 21:17

Think I'd go Tues, Wed, Thurs... I would love Friday off to do shop, clean etc then it wouldn't eat into my weekend and it would be a guarenteed long weekend every week

Xmasbaby11 · 05/03/2020 21:17

I did Mon Tues Wed for years. Was fab. After 4 days off looked forward to going in Monday morning.

I agree that you miss out on Friday socialising, but in contrast it means I can pick up kids from school instead of childcare as they are tired by the end of the week.

I always got the Mon bank hols and work never pro ratered it, so proportionally I got more than 60% of them every year.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 05/03/2020 21:17

I used to do Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It was great for me because I was young and had busy weekends and lived the fact that I had 2 days afterwards to recover and get back into work mode!

I later did a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and that was fine too. Two days before or after the weekend made it feel like I had proper time off. I had another job where I worked 5 half days and although it was the same hours it felt more like I was full time because I was there more than half the day every day and it was too easy to stay behind to do extra little tasks.

Starlight456 · 05/03/2020 21:18

I am a childminder have Friday’s off . Used to be Mondays but hairdressers beauty salons all closed.

Do consider how Mondays affect holiday . Also in most schools inset days are Monday or Friday

Femail · 05/03/2020 21:19

Oh I wish I could have a sunday off but I cant unless I book it as holiday. I do sunday to tuesday.

YukoandHiro · 05/03/2020 21:21

I do Tues to Thurs and I never have that Monday feeling anymore

Oilyoilyoilgob · 05/03/2020 21:21

I do tue/wed/Thur and one Saturday a month max. Self employed and it’s one of the perks of the job 😉

cushioncovers · 05/03/2020 21:22

When I did 4 days a week I did Mon Tues Thurs Friday then had Wednesdays off. It suited me.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 05/03/2020 21:22

If you’re public sector, do Mon Tues Wed , you’ll get the Monday bank holidays

applesandpears33 · 05/03/2020 21:25

If I had a choice I wouldn't work on a Monday. There are so many school holidays and in service days on Mondays. I have school aged DC and I end up having to take a lot of a/l to cover all the school holidays/in service days. If I had a choice I'd work Tues/Wed/Thurs as our local schools have a half day on a Friday and child care is more expensive as a result.

WonderWebbs · 05/03/2020 21:25

I prefer working 2 days on the bounce as I seem to get more done on these days. I work a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I would avoid a Monday as most of the bank holidays fall on a Monday and this can cause problems/confusion with holiday entitlement.

ChillyB · 05/03/2020 21:26

I work tues, weds, thurs seems to work well.

applesandpears33 · 05/03/2020 21:26

You don't always get all the bank holidays in the public sector - some places do a/l in hours and they are calculated pro rata.

APurpleSquirrel · 05/03/2020 21:27

I do Mon/Wed/Fri - that way I do one days work then a day off etc. If I've had a crap day at work the next day I'm not there & if I've had a crap day with DC the next day I'm in work. It also provides good continuity for work as I'm only ever out for one day before I'm back in the office.
I'm lucky in that my boss still gives me the bank holidays.

Leflic · 05/03/2020 21:27

Wednesday is chocker on my commute. Must be because everyone works it. Conversely Monday and Fridays not so much.

I’d work Friday just because it’s always a more fun wind down day. And then probably Wednesday and Thursday so I could gave a long weekend.

bruffin · 05/03/2020 21:28

Depends where you work? Full time people at my work get them paid and part time workers are given extra days holiday (pro rata) to cover them so it still works out as the same holiday as full time people (for us anyway) and we also have the option of taking it unpaid too
I think you have misunderstood.
What happens is that someone works 3 days get given bank holidays prorata 8 bank holidays x 3/5 which is 5 days. If your normal working falls on a BH then you deduct a day off that 5 days. However if there are 7 BH fall on your normal working days you end up taking 2 day from your normal holiday to cover all the BH.
I work Monday, Tuesday Thursday and every other Friday and nearly every bh fall on my working day this year.
If you don't work mondays and say only 3 days fall on BH the you have an extra 2 days on top of your normal holiday in lieu of the BH.
I would go for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday if I could

Could someone advise me on Bank Holidays please as I think I'm being diddled. I work Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday. I get 17 days AL pa which includes BHs. I believe I get 14 days hols & 3 BHs in my entitlement. Most BHs are Monday which is my day off. My colleague works Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning but as the same entitlement as me. However this year, I may be wrong she will be getting 8 days off for Bank Holidays but I only get 7. I'm a bit thick with figures so would appreciate help from someone in the know. Thanks.

LuckyLickitung · 05/03/2020 21:33

Wednesday, Thursday Friday. It's lovely skipping into work fresh and bright on hump day when everyone else is begining to look jaded, and you still feel ready for the weekend with everyone else.

I'm not a great fan of split weeks as they feel disjointed. 4 days with a Tuesday off was quite good, but 5 days per fortnight of alternating 2/3 days with a split day was quite fragmented. (As a teacher in a demanding school, it was tough to follow up behaviour issues promptly and with consistency)

Joans3rddaughter · 05/03/2020 21:33

Tues-thurs seems to be the most popular choice. But what about the other members of staff who then always have to cover the mondays and fridays, saturdays and sundays. Especially the Bank Holidays. What if christmas day falls on a friday? does that mean you don't have to work it that year and for another 3 years?

LazyDoll · 05/03/2020 21:34

I do Monday, Wednesday, Thursday. Couldn’t miss a Monday as too busy to leave my colleagues and means I get a day to restore the house and do any jobs and then 2 working days with Friday off for more fun stuff - long runs, lunch with friends etc ahead of the weekend. Perfect balance. And I haven’t worked a 5 day week for 17 years so I prefer not to do more than 2 days in a row. Feel very lucky to have found such a flexible job (and boss!)

Welshmaenad · 05/03/2020 21:35

I do Monday, Tuesday and every other Wednesday. Works for me. If I had Monday off I would just spend it stressing about what might have gone wrong over the weekend!
