What 3 days would you pick to work part time?

I'm leaning towards Mon, Tue & Wed, as it would be nice to keep the weekend long.

But would it be better to break it up, have a day off midweek?

What pattern do you do if you are part time?

I'd include Monday if only to get all the BHs off!

SudokuQueen · 08/03/2020 10:35

Mon tues weds for me as Monday’s are the most popular bank holiday days so more days off throughout the year

This Grin

I’m part time and I do mon, tues, Weds one week and Thurs, fri the next week. I know that doesn’t answer your question though sorry. Although I love being finished on a weds.

lyralalala · 08/03/2020 10:49

When I worked part-time I did Mon -Wed , but I never had to use holiday up!? If a bank holiday falls on your working day, it is still a bank holiday-you are entitled to those.. if your contract says you you should work on a bank holiday, you should be entitled to a day off in lieu.

You are only entitled to a pro rata percentage of BH’s

If your workplace gave you them all then it’s likely that (like many places) they just weren’t good at calculating the holiday entitlement of part time staff

Staff working Tues, wed, thurs would get exactly the same amount of holidays. They will have more choice of when to take their holidays as they wont be forced to use holidays for the bank holiday days

curlsnotfrizz · 08/03/2020 10:57

with 3 days it doesn't matter really that much as you are most of the week at home anyways.

I would probably have them consecutively (Mon - Wed, or Tues - Thurs, or Wed - Fri) so you have 4 days off in a row.

When I worked this pattern, there was some kind of formula for the bank hols. it was pro rated.

Nomel · 08/03/2020 11:25

Mon-Wednesday, it’s lovely getting to Wednesday and knowing you don’t have work in the morning. I can’t understand why anyone would want a random day in the week off you’d have the other days of work hanging over you!

wintertime6 · 08/03/2020 11:45

I do Monday Tuesday and Wednesday at the minute. I like it, but as most bank holidays fall on Monday and Tuesday, I found that it reduced my pro rata annual leave entitlement. If you don't work Mondays, you end up with some extra annual leave days as you use up less days on bank holidays.

In my old job I did Wednesday, Thursday and Friday which was also good because Friday felt like a more relaxed day in work.

I don't think I'd like to to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as I like to have 2 consecutive days off during the week, it feels like a bigger break from work.

TheSmelliestHouse · 08/03/2020 11:51

I used to love tues-thurs as I got it done in a lump then had 4 lovely days,
My friend loved Mon , wed, Fri as she always had tomorrow off.

WalesStar · 08/03/2020 11:57

When I go back to work, I’ll be doing Monday-Wednesday. I get BH off paid anyway and I hate working Fridays, so for me this is the best schedule. I love the idea of getting work all out of the way at the beginning of the week then having a super long weekend Smile

KittenFace · 09/03/2020 12:29

I work Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I love it because I don't get a big build up of stuff to catch up on after my days off, and as a PP mentioned, I always have the next day off to look forward to!

Wixi · 09/03/2020 12:36

I worked Tues-Thurs for about 3 years while my DD was at nursery and pre-school, then changed to 5 "mornings", ie 8.30-2.30 when she went to school.

MrsKoala · 09/03/2020 12:43

I worked in HR 8 years ago and the bank holidays were not pro rated or passed on if Monday wasn’t one of your Working days in any place I worked at. Has this changed since then? If not I’d always choose Monday so I’d have the bank holidays off.

dementedpixie · 09/03/2020 12:57

Statutory minimum is 28 days. Bank holidays can be included in those days. Part timers get a pro rata amount of holidays which will include a pro rata amount of bank holidays. If you work Monday then any bank holidays falling on those days come out of your holiday entitlement if you are off. Part timers not working a Monday get the exact same holidays as those working it (if doing the same amount of hours/days) but have more choice of when to take holidays as they arent forced to take Mondays off as standard

MrsKoala · 09/03/2020 13:05

What if bank holidays are not included in those days? Where I last worked bank hols were not counted and everyone got 24 days full time. The 24 days were then pro rated for those who worked part time and the bank holidays were just on the top of that.

Rainbunny · 09/03/2020 13:18

Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. God that sounds lovely!

Fr0g · 09/03/2020 13:23

I work Mon-Wed
If Wednesday is a bit shit, I love cheerily wishing everyone 'have a nice weekend' when I leave on Wednesday evening.

the organisation - and me - are quite flexible, so I can swap days around if I want to, or to meet workload.

dementedpixie · 09/03/2020 13:27

The 24 days were then pro rated for those who worked part time and the bank holidays were just on the top of that

Then part timers would get pro rata of both the 24 days and the 8 days bank holiday I.e. a pro rata amount of 24+8 = 32.

If part timers got all the bank holidays plus pro rata of full time hours then they would end up with more holidays than full time staff which would be unfair to full time staff.

Bruffin · 09/03/2020 13:33

Mrs koala , you are entitled to bank holidays in lieu (prorata) if you're not due to work on a bh, that is law otherwise you are discriminating against p,/t workers
You would need to prorata BH so if you work 3 out of 5 days then 8 day BH x 3/5 ie 5
Then deduct from that BH that fall on you working day . Anything left is added to your normal prorata holiday.

MrsKoala · 09/03/2020 13:34

No, if they worked Monday they got the bank hol off but if they did tues-thurs they got nothing. They would only get the day off if it was one of their work days if not they didn’t. Only the 24 days were included in the pro rated calculation.

MrsKoala · 09/03/2020 13:39

I’m just wondering if it’s changed since I worked there or if the company (a very large one) we’re doing it wrong. I remember every bank holiday we’d get loads of calls from people saying it wasn’t fair and we were told to tell them that’s just the way it was and to choose a Monday if ever we worked part time!

Tanith · 09/03/2020 13:48

A long weekend is just as long Saturday-Tuesday or Thursday-Sunday as it is Friday-Monday Confused

lyralalala · 09/03/2020 13:53

So many places don’t deal with BH’s fairly/properly with part-time staff

bruffin · 09/03/2020 14:27

It's been law for a long time Mrs Koala. I think it came in 2000
