What 3 days would you pick to work part time?

I'm leaning towards Mon, Tue & Wed, as it would be nice to keep the weekend long.

But would it be better to break it up, have a day off midweek?

What pattern do you do if you are part time?

I work Tues-thurs.
As people have said, I get "extra credit " for bank holidays, instead of having to eat in to my leave to cover them.
Also, ds nursery used to charge a flat monthly rate. Regardless of any bank holidays.

I have been on pro-rata leave for nearly 20 years.
I work 1/2 the hours of our full time workers. So I get 1/2 the amount of leave.
AND half the bank holidays.
Full timers get 10 days of bank holidays. I get 5 days (5 x8 hours =40 hours, my days are shorter)
If bank holidays is a monday, I get 6 hours "credit".
If bank holidays is Tues, I have to give work 6 hours to cover my leave

It doesn't make a difference to your annual leave what days you work in terms of bank holidays. If you are part time, you are allocated a certain percentage of the total bank holiday hours on top of your leave. So if you work 3 days a week, you will get 60% of the bank holidays.

If you don't work Mondays, you will have a certain percentage of the bank holiday allowance removed from your total annual leave to make it fair for everyone.

Currently pregnant with DC 2 and when I return to work I'm planning to come back 3 days a week and work Tues-Thurs and have Monday & Fridays off

AryaStarkWolf · 09/03/2020 15:30

I think Tuesday-Thursday would be a dream
.....

Balkinfly · 09/03/2020 15:35

Yep I try to work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday but have to work some Saturdays to appear less.smug.Wink

Having a Monday off with school age children, is a privilege not to be missed, if at all possible.

Hollyhead · 09/03/2020 15:40

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie I’m not sure that would be lawful! You get a % if the bank holidays regardless of your pattern.

BunnytheBee · 09/03/2020 15:45

It depends on your job too as to what days would suit. With what I do it would be difficult to be away two days in a row so I would do Mon, Wed and Fri. It would also mean not being away from home more than one day at a time.

Thirtyrock39 · 09/03/2020 15:48

Friday is always the least popular day to work (although personally I really like working it) so if it's not your choice which days to work most employers will prefer part timers to do a Friday ime as it's often a day of low staffing numbers and a popular day to take annual leave

BunnytheBee · 09/03/2020 15:59

I don’t know why people prefer Fridays to Monday’s. I’d always rather have a Monday off

BunnytheBee · 09/03/2020 16:00

If I was having one day off it would be Wednesday to break up the week...

amusedbush · 09/03/2020 16:02

My dream would be Wed/Thur/Fri. I like the atmosphere in the office on a Friday, plus DH has a rotational day off so every six weeks he is off Sat, Sun and Mon. We could go away for a couple of nights and not be right back to work the next day.

LukeSkywalkingOnTheseHaters · 09/03/2020 16:15

Friday is a bit of a doss day, where people stick in training and less formal meetings, social events and in my experience everyone is looking to clock off early anyway. I would def do Weds-Fri as a result.

retirementrocks · 09/03/2020 17:31

I chose to work Tues to Thurs when I went part time....every weekend a long one and it was great! Easy to tidy up at the beginning and end of the weekend and Monday is a great day to go shopping. Nice and quiet.

boobtube · 09/03/2020 18:09

Tues-Thurs

RidingMyBike · 10/03/2020 06:42

I used to get a email from admin after each (Mon) bank holiday asking when I was going to make up the 2.8 hours I owed them as I was only entitled to 0.6 of the bank holiday! That was in the days of a ‘leave card’ to record your leave on.

Now we’re on an electronic system which works it all out in hours and adds or subtracts for bank holidays automatically depending on which days you work which is a lot easier as there’s no ‘making up time’ needed after an individual bank hol. I used to respond to the email with a list of everything I’d done outside normal working hours/not taken lunch break in the previous week!

ItsJustASimpleLine · 10/04/2020 18:59

I do Mon-Wed as it fits with childcare but I would prefer to not work mondays as you get stung on Bank Holidays.

Topsy44 · 10/04/2020 19:15

I work 4 days a week and have Thursdays off. I'd much rather have a Monday or Friday off but if I could work 3 days I would choose Mon, Tue, Wed just to get the working week out the way then you'd get to Wednesday afternoon and you could breathe a sigh of relief that you had 4 days off before you had to go back in again! That is actually my dream but I think a dream it will stay!!

LakieLady · 10/04/2020 19:23

I do Tues-Weds-Thurs and I love the 4-day weekend, and having 2 days entirely to myself.

Mind you, I do short days too, only 17 hours a week.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 10/04/2020 19:48

When I did work they called Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday staff TWATS

Absolutely. That's what I call my senior finance officer, who works Tuesday – Thursday. Tis the only way I remember what days she's in Grin

mrst3 · 20/01/2022 18:59

I do Tue to Thu have done for 7 years almost.
It's heaven I never get that Monday Blues feeling and it's basically a long weekend either side.
The down side is I'm never compensated for the Bank Hols which fall on a Monday or Friday!

LadyWhistledownsPen · 20/01/2022 19:29

I went part time in September after may leave. I do Tues-Thurs so I always have a long weekend and as I don't work Mondays I get bank holidays back to use as leave when I want.

Ours is small family run business and they’ve never given us the bank holiday allowance 😢
