What 3 days would you pick to work part time?

I'm leaning towards Mon, Tue & Wed, as it would be nice to keep the weekend long.

But would it be better to break it up, have a day off midweek?

What pattern do you do if you are part time?

I am self employed so it’s a bit different but I try really hard not to work on Fridays (I have the kids) and it’s really nice to feel a bit like it’s a long weekend. I’d never swap that. I used to also have a Tuesday off but that was determined by circumstance rather than me. It was nice to be off midweek though. I think Mon - Wed would be good though.

RidingMyBike · 06/03/2020 19:29

Check whether your childcare has any restrictions - ours is now saying any new starters must use at least a Monday or Friday as those were the quieter days to fill. So a Tues-Thurs wouldn’t be allowed.

I’ve done Wed-Fri (pre-child whilst studying) and Mon-Wed (both pre and post child). I prefer Mon-Wed as you catch up with everyone on Mon instead of coming in on a Wed and feeling out of the loop.
I’ve tried splitting the days up but really hate that as it makes the week so bitty - I prefer really throwing myself into work for three straight days, then concentrating on everything else. It also gives you more time as a block to do things with - eg my DM lives four hours away so being able to use that block of four days to visit her without using annual leave makes life a lot easier

I've noticed (as a sahm) that lots of people have Mon and Fri off. Everywhere is a lot quieter Tues, weds, Thurs - especially parks, shops, gyms etc.

bellocchild · 06/03/2020 19:32

Don't have Wednesday off. It means you have Monday twice, catching up on Thursday...

Sweetcheeks21 · 06/03/2020 19:32

I work Mon, Tues and half a day Weds. It works for me as we have management team meetings on a Monday and I love having a 4 day weekend (although I do tend to keep an eye on emails over those days but that’s my choice).

Ginntoniconpause · 06/03/2020 19:34

I used to do Tuesday Wednesday Thursday and wasnt keen.

I know do thursday Friday one week and wednesday thursday friday the next and love it.

Greensmurf1 · 06/03/2020 19:34

Find out their bank holiday and holiday allowance policy. I work Monday-Wednesday and am entitled to all bank holidays, not pro rata and they are not taken out of my holiday allowance either. My manager thought that was a mistake and whinged about it but it was too late because it was in my contract! (And after working full time for them for 5 years with hardly any pay rises, I felt I bloomin well earned it!)

Having Fridays off is great because it is more common among other part timers and you have more chance to meet up with other mums from time to time.

On Mondays in an office setting people seem to waste a lot of time talking about their weekends. On Fridays people also tend to start slacking in the afternoon, so some people want to work on one of those days so they have less pressure. Others want to avoid them so they can focus on getting their work done and out of the way without being delayed by other people’s work/socialhabits.

The feeling of finishing work after 3 days in a row is a relief although it takes me through Thursday to actually recover from the stress of trying to get all the work done in a shorter time frame... plus there’s all the tiredness from blitzing through most of the housework and errands on Thursday to make sure it’s out of the way before spoiling the weekend.

Yabadee · 06/03/2020 19:36

I work Monday Wednesday and Friday, love it. I have a condition where a day at work exhausts me though so I like the alternate days to recover.

I wfh mostly too, only really going into the office once a week or fortnight.

I have the best job Grin for me anyway

Workingmum34 · 06/03/2020 19:37

Wednesday Thursday Friday.

No Monday night feeling (even on a Tuesday evening).

Fridays everyone is more chilled out.

sillyoldelfbacktohimself · 06/03/2020 19:40

I work Mon, Weds & Thurs. Monday so I know what's going on for the rest of the week and Fridays seem a bit more relaxed so I'd get less done plus it makes a long weekend.

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/03/2020 19:54

I have Monday and Tuesday off and love it as I never get the back to work feeling. By Wednesday it's nearly Thursday which is nearly weekend!

tryingtoloseweightnow · 06/03/2020 20:13

I do Monday, Thursday & Friday as it fits with childcare.
Ideally I'd prefer Monday, Tuesday & Thursday

murakamilove · 06/03/2020 20:17

Tues, Weds, Thurs

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 06/03/2020 20:21

I worked Mon Tues Thurs. worked really well

nanbread · 06/03/2020 20:25

I've worked loads of combinations.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday is the ultimate 3 day week.

You never get Sunday night blues.

You miss all the boring Monday meetings.

You get to work party day (aka Friday).

You never work more than two days in a row.

You get your bank hol hours to use when you like (pro rata) rather than taken out of your annual leave.

The only downside is you so need to be disciplined about not letting work creep into your Thursday.

Thirtyrock39 · 06/03/2020 20:29

I like working Fridays as the roads are much quieter and everyone is in a good mood as it's nearly the weekend.
I'd work Tuesday weds Friday given the chance -Monday to sort everything after the weekend , then a couple of days together as splitting all the days can mean a bit of a lack of continuity

Yddraigcymraeg · 06/03/2020 20:32

I would do Tues to Thurs as you would have a long weekend and when part time you usually get allocated pro rata hours for bank holidays. For example if you worked 22.5 hours a week, you would only get allocated 4.5 hours for a bank holiday which means you would have to make up the time. If you didn’t work a Monday you would usually get credited the time so would benefit.

SandlakeRd · 06/03/2020 20:34

I work Mon, tues and Friday . It works well for me. I effectively have another weekend in the middle of the week and I am not away from the office for too long either.

Emmapeeler1 · 06/03/2020 20:34

I work Weds-Fri and love it. As pp have said, Friday is a more relaxed day to work. But more importantly it's when lots of my work gets done as it's nice and quiet. As a result I don't worry about work until the following Weds so get a good break. (Well, one spent tidying up shit).

Fowles94 · 06/03/2020 20:36

If you can do weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They're the days I used to pick.
Weekdays everything is quieter and cheaper 😊

newbingepisodes · 06/03/2020 20:42

I do tue, wed, thur at the moment. Lovely!

YappityYapYap · 06/03/2020 20:57

I think Friday is the best day of the week at work so I would do Mon, Wed Fri or Wed-Fri

Theflying19 · 06/03/2020 21:16

I've done a whole load of different patterns. Mon tue thurs was good from a work perspective - I was only away from work for one day at any time, and also only away from my young children for max two working days at a time.
Wed Thurs Fri was marvellous for the lack of the depressing Sunday night feeling. And by the time you DO start work on Wednesday, it's down hill to the weekend! Mon Tues Wed has its benefits, obviously - get it over and done with!
I've never had both Mon and Fri off, but can see the benefits of that too.
I have noticed that Tuesdays are by far the worst for public transport and Fridays is a cheerier day to work but rush hour starts earlier.

For me it all depended on what childcare I could get in the end, and I found there were pros and cons to each.

Soph7777 · 06/03/2020 21:20

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Twinkled · 06/03/2020 21:31

Due to bank hols don't work on a Monday . Friday it a nice atmosphere as everyone looks forward to w/end. So I would choose either but if we go away it's great to have a Friday off to get everything ready to go. So my choices would be

  1. Tuesday to Thursday ( favourite)
  2. Wednesday to Friday
