Hey everyone, I came across this Loewe bag a few months ago and i feel like i'm really into it, however not sure whether it's worth buying it for this amount of money (I mean it's just a basket bag). What do you think of it and would you get it?
this is the bag www.mytheresa.com/en-gb/loewe-medium-leather-trimmed-basket-tote-1465320.html?catref=category
thanks x

Hate the white leather pocket. I really don’t think it is worth the money. Far cheaper straw bags are also hand made. I agree with paying a bit more for good quality things, not made in sweatshops, but it is stupidly expensive.

Bluntness100 · 04/03/2020 14:37

I think this is one clear cut case of paying for the label.

Don’t get me wrong, I love an expensive handbag, some are beautiful, but this is not one of them, it’s a big standard bag and you’re paying over three hundred quid just for the label on the front,

carlyclock · 04/03/2020 14:40

Such a weird thread. Buy the bag if you want. Or not, why do you need to ask Mumsnet?

DontCallMeShitley · 04/03/2020 14:46

I woudn't buy it, looks cheap and no idea of the authenticity.

I have spent a lot more on bags in the past, but only from a known an reputable shop, an actual shop, not online where you can end up with anything.

I also have a basket from the South of France, similar shape but fabric covered. I am very attached to it but would never have paid more than about £15.00 which is what it was at the time.

MayFayner · 04/03/2020 14:48

No, it’s horrible. I hate the gratuitous leather patch with Loewe stamp 🤮. Get a real handmade one if you want to jump on the tail-end of this trend.

shockthemonkey · 04/03/2020 14:49

"i know, but i feel like there is a story behind this bag"

  • better be a good story...
ilovedjerrymore · 04/03/2020 14:49

I have seen much better bags out there that are not from primark and at a fraction of the price.
If you can afford it and really want it then that’s up to you, me personally it’s a no.

womenspeakout · 04/03/2020 14:49

It's overpriced.

And why do you need a 'story' to it. Do you really believe it's hand women? And even if it is, those workers earn pennies, and then they sell it for this overblown price.

FurrySlipperBoots · 04/03/2020 14:50

Can you easily afford that much, or would you have to dip into savings/cut back elsewhere?
What do you plan on using it for? Is it really the most practical option?
How much use would it actually get?
Were you looking for a bag anyway or did you just stumble across it and decide your liked it?
Do you have a partner who'll be impacted by the purchase?
Have you seen it in real life or just online? If online can you easily return it if it's not what you hoped for?
If you bought this bag, would you be strong enough to resist another that you liked even more but that you don't 'need' due to having this one?
Is it a 'need' or a 'want'? If just a 'want' do you think you'd regret not having bought it 6 months/a year from now?
Do you like it enough to be your only birthday present (assuming you have one coming up!)? If so maybe you could suggest your partner./family/friends contribute towards it in place or buying anything individual.
What would you do with that money if you didn't spend it on the bag?
Do you like it enough to sell something you own to raise money for it?

PeterPanGoesWrong · 04/03/2020 14:52

Comptoir Libanais Is a Lebanese restaurant, they sell very similar —ugly— bags at around £50.
Not very effective stealth boast though.

Waste your hard earned cash however you see fit, but please don’t ask for validation.

AsTrueAsADogsLove · 04/03/2020 14:53

These are in all the markets in Spain for about €25, also handmade. And much sturdier looking.

Pipandmum · 04/03/2020 14:54

There is no 'story' behind this bag. You can get beautiful fair trade handwoven basket bags from Africa for under £50.

animom · 04/03/2020 14:54

Think the Jacquemes bag would be better - exactly the same, original design the Loewe is based on and its only £50 more! Its a great brand too

WhatHappenedThen · 04/03/2020 14:55

I prefer the Joules bag. I don’t like the square leather logo on the expensive bag. If you like the story’ then you sound like a marketers dream customer. I think it’s a little silly to get caught up in the marketing. If you love the bag and can afford it then get it but if you are wanting it because it’s ‘expensive’ or has a story then I think that a bit naff.

Lily193 · 04/03/2020 14:56

It's not to my taste but if you love it then buy it. I'f you're still thinking about it months later, it sounds like you may regret letting it go. My Theresa is a reputable retailer so you won't have any problems with returns.

Fluffybutter · 04/03/2020 14:56

I wouldn’t , it’s quite boring for the price .
I’d pay that for a bag, just not that one

dustibooks · 04/03/2020 14:56

It is horrid and probably cost £3.25 to make.

womenspeakout · 04/03/2020 14:57

- better be a good story...

You can buy a full edition of War and Peace for under £10....

msmith501 · 04/03/2020 14:59

It is rather ugly. The only saving grace if you buy it is that no one will think you paid much for it.

LillianGish · 04/03/2020 14:59

i feel like there is a story behind this bag - is the story that they saw you coming? Actually you could write that on the white patch to make it even more individual.

TheFastandTheCurious · 04/03/2020 15:01

Why do you give a shit what other people think, just buy the fucking ugly bag

Franticbutterfly · 04/03/2020 15:03

I love an expensive handbag, but that one doesn’t look like it’s worth the £300 odd they are asking for it.

SewItGoes · 04/03/2020 15:03

I'd just make up a story about it in my head... My mass-produced quilted-fabric bag is actually hand-crafted by a local woman who runs her own boutique. The design for each bag comes to her in a dream, and no two are ever alike. She won't sell a bag unless her bag-maker's intuition tells her on first sight that they're the right person for that bag. Wink

MaMisled · 04/03/2020 15:03

If it will provide that feel good feeling and give you loads of pleasure, if you can afford to pay your bills this month and wont go without essentials......do it! Life is too short not to. Enjoy it, its a lovely bag.

SewItGoes · 04/03/2020 15:04

Er, I meant that I'd buy a cheaper version and make up a story about it, of course. I don't think it would last long enough to be worth even half of that price, but then again, I don't buy expensive bags. I have expensive hobbies that I'd rather splurge on.
