There is not one person I know in real life that is prepping for a coronavirus outbreak. In fact, no one I speak to even mentions the threat of the virus.

Of course we know of it as the hysteria surrounding it is all over the news / social media, but aibu to think preppers only exist on mumsnet?

I have a buffer of food, water, toiletries, household stuff, and food and litter for the cat in. It is probably enough for the three of us plus cat to feed us all well for around 4 weeks, plus a well stocked medicine and first aid box.

I'm chronically ill and do my shopping online because I generally can't manage to do it in person, my young adult DC both work weird hours so it's often not possible to get them to shop instead. It makes sense for me to have well-stocked cupboards and freezer so we can eat properly and have proper medications in the event of any issues, be that illness, snow causing delivery issuea, supply problems or whatever else might happen. It's not "hysterical", "nutty", "bonkers" or "selfish" , it's practical and sensible for us.

If you don't want to bother, don't, but piss off with the stupid insults.

pallisers · 26/02/2020 22:16

We are regularly snowed in and have had a boil water/no water situation a few times in past few years. So we have enough water/food/tp/meds etc in so that we could survive at least 2 weeks with having to go out. if we had to self-isolate, we could survive in some degree of comfort. How is that prepping?

beautifulstranger101 · 26/02/2020 22:17

Well no because wouldn't most people be dead after no food for 6 weeks (the non preppers), then when my 6 weeks supply runs out I'll eat the unprepared

What if there arent any "unprepared"? as you all said, you dont disclose it to anyone. Maybe the people in this thread are just "pretending" to be unprepared. Maybe they have more supplies than you and can last longer and will eat you?

ExhaustedGrinch · 26/02/2020 22:17

Exhausted, but then you catch it by eating them??!

Not if they die from being unprepared when it comes to food supplies and not the virus itself. I have it all planned out. Wink

Onetickettomars · 26/02/2020 22:18

So I was actually thinking I could do with a few weeks of quarantine and lose a stone or two 😆 ... so even though we’ve got lots of food stored, I’ll give it to DH and DC and put myself on a healthy (no rubbish snacks) diet!

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:18

Ah I see - so you will swab them before you tuck in...Smile

ExhaustedGrinch · 26/02/2020 22:19

Maybe they have more supplies than you and can last longer and will eat you?

Now I'll admit this is a sneaky tactic I hadn't thought about. I must do some more work on my plan!

EnidBlyton · 26/02/2020 22:19

i think prepping is a good way of taking your mind of what could happen, taking control

Echobelly · 26/02/2020 22:19

Definitely know non MN people prepping.... although TBF, there's prepping and there's prepping. A lot of people, like us this evening, are doing it slightly sheepishly and would be laughed at by real preppers. We're doing it in the hope that it won't come to it, and that it won't be long or too bad if it does but there might be an initial run on shops and/or the odd shortage of stock for a few weeks. I don't think you have to be tinfoil hat to do one big shop when faced with a fairly real possibility of some disruption.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:19

Sorry that was to @ExhaustedGrinch

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:20

I haven’t told anyone in RL I’m prepping

So I think this is why it can seem like it’s only mn

WhentheDealGoesDown · 26/02/2020 22:20

I get my toilet rolls from Amazon when they go on offer, 45 rolls Andrex for £15, at one stage I had about 150 rolls last yearGrin as they had gone on offer, likewise kitchen roll and tissues. There is toilet roll mountain down the side of the wardrobe in the spare bedroom.

Grin its the old double bluff! very sneaky

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:21

Yes I’ve invested in an extra 32 loo rolls. No one will be allowed it just for a wee

ExhaustedGrinch · 26/02/2020 22:22

Ah I see - so you will swab them before you tuck in...

I've just Googled. Apparently it'll be fine so long as well cooked! Grin

It’s a bit like surviving nuclear war then slowly dying of radiation poisoning, scrabbling for scraps of food in the dust. I’ve watched Threads. I would rather just be dead in the first bomb.

If we get to the stage where people have used up their six weeks of food, there is no water or power, murdering gangs are roaming and the dead are lying in the streets, I would rather not be here to know about it thanks.

IceWings · 26/02/2020 22:23

what happens after 6 weeks when your supplies runs out? then you'll be no better off than someone who never prepped
They’ll probably have starved to death by then.

TowerRingInferno · 26/02/2020 22:23

At work today I discovered that I was the only one (out of 6) who hasn’t started stockpiling in case of Coronavirus. The others seemed to be majoring on painkillers, tissues, cleaning stuff, loo roll, more than food.

ShakespearesSisters · 26/02/2020 22:23

I was doing an on line shop at tesco earlier, was going to get it delivered next tuesday, but changed it to tomorrow as randomly baked beans and tinned tomatoes were not available for delivery after 1st march! Just gone back in to add some garlic puree as I finished my tube earlier and my Italian chopped tomatoes now say that purchase is limited to 2 items. I'm wondering if people are stocking up.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:24

Plot my dp is muttering darkly about which neighbours would be most likely to turn Hmm

What we need to his our stores is the false room partition that Laura ingalls wilder’s husband had to hide his secret grain stores, which pa worked out and took - in the big freeze book I guess?

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:25

Hide our stores I mean

AngelsOnHigh · 26/02/2020 22:25

MoiraRose, yep, deliberately left it in to see if anyone would notice.

(Grin never works for me).

Think it was predictive text (re chimney flues etc.)Did notice it but couldn't be bothered changing it and to be honest, in the grand scheme of things, meh.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 26/02/2020 22:26

What’s to prep for? Hiding out in a secret bunker? The flu kills just as many people. The % of survivors well outweighs the amount of deaths. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I hate people that get hysterical over nothing. My friend from Italy messaged me when it first reached the uk, being in Brighton and I live in Brighton she was worried, now she’s got more reason to worry and he’s right in the centre, told me everyone over there is going crazy, supermarkets empty, and she can’t go to work at the moment. I tell you what can be contagious 😷 hypercondriacs, that’s the type people prepping for corona virus 😔

Dogwalks2 · 26/02/2020 22:26

I would have thought peepers were mad, until Storm Desmond hit in 2015 we didn’t flood, top of a hill but had no electricity or safe water for 3 days, I always have loads of food but a battery operated radio I did not have. You feel so isolated as the phones can’t charge (unless you are willing to sit in the car charging as you can’t drive because the roads are flooded). The 2 things I’d invest in phone charging banks and a battery operated radio. Think I’d be glad to be forced to eat the contents of my freezer as it’s rammed full.

PlomBear · 26/02/2020 22:26

I have a bag of turtle beans in the larder but they’re poisonous if not soaked. I have lentils, coffee, cans of soup, cereal etc in there. Not sure how long it’ll last for and I certainly didn’t prep. It’s all stuff I don’t actually want to eat. Like the turtle beans.
