There is not one person I know in real life that is prepping for a coronavirus outbreak. In fact, no one I speak to even mentions the threat of the virus.

Of course we know of it as the hysteria surrounding it is all over the news / social media, but aibu to think preppers only exist on mumsnet?

I don’t think it’s a mental health thing, so much as a healthy respect for the potential situation? Agree with IveGotBills. I have enough food and meds for a month, I reckon. Might need to order out for milk :)

MoiraRose · 26/02/2020 22:07

I have worked in public health for 15 years, came in close contact with numerous diseases, all types of flues
I honestly didn't know until just know that the plural of flu has an e in it

I caught swine flu I was licked down for two weeks
Was that on the NHS?

PlomBear · 26/02/2020 22:08

If society breaks down because there is no food, there will be looting and violence. The populace aren’t just going to stay home singing rousing songs to keep their British spirits up.

How much of the police / military will be off sick or dead?

ExhaustedGrinch · 26/02/2020 22:08

My brother and dad have both bought n100 masks because they both have asthma. They're the only people I know. I laughed initially but I went to order myself and my son masks today and everywhere has sold out so it would seen there is a hell of a lot of people prepping out there.

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 22:09

"They'll swing between a state of smugness and sheer panic but find comfort in comparing stockpiles."
Again, maybe you should spend more time getting sensible advice from general preppers and adapting that to your situation and less time thinking you are the smartest thing around.
The Preppers topic was, until Brexit, generally inhabited by people like me. And then people who aren't Preppers started asking for some tips.

Itsonlywords · 26/02/2020 22:09

Hand gel is sold out everywhere I've looked too!

DoSomethingBob · 26/02/2020 22:09

I’m a supermarket dot com picker and we’ve definitely seen an upswing in sales of dried and UHT milk, tinned goods, dried pulses, bread flour, yeast, tissues and Pot Noodles. 🤣

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:10

I’ve prepped!! Dp went through the cupboards coat and worked out how many days we and pets could survive in a lockdown scenario Shock

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:10

Hand gel sold out on our online shop

I have masks for us all and detail wipes etc in case needed

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 22:10

@PlomBear , having lived under martial law in another country, I think you'll find the authorities have thought of that. We are a small densely populated country unlike the USA.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:10

Detol wipes I mean

SmileyClare · 26/02/2020 22:11

Surely having six weeks worth of food (as one poster claims) is a luxury many people can't afford?

I would struggle to pay for three weeks of extra food for our household. I do have a huge amount of toilet roll that dh got cheap from a whole saler so could barter in an emergency I suppose. Or eat it Grin

Onetickettomars · 26/02/2020 22:12

I like having lots of food, water, toiletries and cleaning products stored. It’s a sense of being prepared. I’ve got food for my family for a month and water for 2 weeks. I think I need to stock up more medication.

I’ve also got masks and hand sanitiser. Again, this is just in case.

None of my colleagues have done any prep. One of them actually said today that she knows I’ll help her out if needed. She wasn’t joking either. That was a bit puzzling, as I’m not sure I’d make her a coffee in the pantry, never mind give her supplies lol.

So I think prepping isn’t something to discuss, as it means others can expect hand outs when the SHTF!

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:12

I have six months of my medications too actually

beautifulstranger101 · 26/02/2020 22:12

I agree with @plombear
If ALL food shops are empty then of course they'll be anarchy. It will be total chaos- violence, looting, attacks etc
Also- how do you know how long to prep for? what happens after 6 weeks when your supplies runs out? then you'll be no better off than someone who never prepped

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:12

Yes I forgot bottled water - I think we have enough for ten days. Also candles and matches etc

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 22:13

My dear, my supplies won't run out in 6 weeks and you will never know I had them.

Nacreous · 26/02/2020 22:13

You could say I was a "prepper": I keep enough in dried and frozen and long fridge life foods that we normally consume as a household to get through probably a month of shortages. A bit longer on really weird combinations. Multivitamins in as if there were shortages fresh food is likely to suffer most. And plenty of meds and loo roll, a few spare candles in case of power cuts, as well as torches and batteries for the radio.

I grew up very rurally and days of power cuts were normal, as was being iced in to the point where you'd be having to walk 4 miles through snow and ice to the nearest shop if you didn't keep food in.

I'm also the only adult in the house, so if I'm ill then that has a big impact. Much easier just to have some stocks in.

And finally, if lots of people were ill, or there are supply chain issues because of storms or because other countries experience unrest or significant economic disruption (as we see in relation to China where disruption to production is likely start to impact supply of goods in the fairly near future) then I don't have to go and try 3 supermarkets for pasta or whatever.

I think a lot lot more people than you would realise prep in this way: my parents do, my boss does and the colleague I am closest to at work does. Several other friends at least try and keep in a week or two's worth.

Scarlettpixie · 26/02/2020 22:13

I prep. It was for a no deal brexit but I have been running it down to restock in the autumn. I am renaming the brexit cupboard the corona virus cupboard, people at work know I have it. I would like to think we could easily manage a fortnight of isolation. Probably a month.

TiddlestheCat · 26/02/2020 22:14

I'm prepared. Sort of. My husband did his usual big supermarket shop today and I told him to buy extra coffee pods and loo rolls. Just the essentials.

ExhaustedGrinch · 26/02/2020 22:14

what happens after 6 weeks when your supplies runs out? then you'll be no better off than someone who never prepped

Well no because wouldn't most people be dead after no food for 6 weeks (the non preppers), then when my 6 weeks supply runs out I'll eat the unprepared.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:14

Scarlett snap - mine was a brexit stash that has now become the corona stash

Onceuponatimethen · 26/02/2020 22:15

Exhausted, but then you catch it by eating them??! Grin

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/02/2020 22:16

Oh, we also have what my DP calls “the apothecary”, which has a shelf full of spare deodorants, shower gels, cotton wool toothpaste, body creams etc. If something we use is on BOGOF or three for two I stash them in the hall cupboard. Nothing to do with Brexit or a virus, just common sense because we have space.
