There is not one person I know in real life that is prepping for a coronavirus outbreak. In fact, no one I speak to even mentions the threat of the virus.

Of course we know of it as the hysteria surrounding it is all over the news / social media, but aibu to think preppers only exist on mumsnet?

OP posts:
Heartofglass12345 · 28/02/2020 21:55

My husband is making us prep because he's worried all the preppers are going to empty the shops lol

Willow2017 · 28/02/2020 22:14

Preppers dont empty shelves panic buyers do.

Heartofglass12345 · 28/02/2020 23:54

Ah it's because of them then

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 29/02/2020 04:28

@ILikeyourHairyHands, your post makes great sense and reads beautifully and it’s what I aspire to. Thank you.

I’m staying with my Mum this week. She’s eighty, though sprightly, and I will stock her up a bit this weekend if she will let me. I went to Costco this week and got loo and kitchen roll, tissues and orange juice for her. She has a stash of tins but I think she could do with a few more, also freezer items.

yellowallpaper · 29/02/2020 13:08

I actually know a doctor who is a prepper. More for climate disaster. He even has a gun to fight of desperate raiders. This is in the U.K. bonkers.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 29/02/2020 14:35

Now that's an actual prepper according to my research.

Bunnyfuller · 29/02/2020 18:23

I wouldn’t be surprised if the panic buying starts this coming week - the random case in Surrey and the Govt putting their guidance out following the COBRA meeting.

I just need cat biscuits and uht milk and we’re pretty much ready.

speakout · 29/02/2020 18:36

I still don't get why people are worried.

auslass · 29/02/2020 18:39

Was in Waitrose and WH Smith today, one lady refused to believe they didn't have hand san and said "go out the back and get it". Lol. I have a half used bottle my mum insisted I take on a plane six months ago. Do you think I can sell it?

EndlessAutumn · 29/02/2020 18:54

I’ve added extra wine to my next online order. Sorted Wine

gamerchick · 29/02/2020 19:09

wouldn’t be surprised if the panic buying starts this coming week

Yep, I come to the same conclusion a few days ago. No doubt it'll be the preppers who get the blame even thought we're pretty much set and won't be adding to it.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/02/2020 19:12

I still don't get why people are worried.

Give it three weeks, it'll sink in.

Paddingtonthebear · 29/02/2020 19:15

I’ve just been to a local Home Bargains (to get normal stuff not stockpiling!) and heard a staff member say they put out 50 bottles of anti backhand gel yesterday morning and they were all gone in 30 mins.

There was also a distinct lack on shelves of shower gel, antibacterial wipes, rice and weirdly, Coca Cola 😆

FourTeaFallOut · 29/02/2020 19:28

Apparently a lot of sweeteners come out of China and, particularly diet Coke-Cola's will start to struggle make up for the Chinese lockdown.

I was in Christchurch when they had the fucking huge earthquake in 2011 and Coke sold out of the shops before the water did even though people were told not to use the tap water initially, so if you have a diet coke habit, if nothing else, go and get it now.

SusanneLinder · 29/02/2020 19:32

I got some extra shopping and some Dettol and Anti bacterial soap in case there is a quarantine. I didn't get a Hazmat suit, guard dogs and ammunition in case people want to nick my tins of beans...😂

katmandoo · 29/02/2020 19:44

Are you mad! I haven't even told my teenagers I have been prepped for brexit and I had been having a bit of a turnover since Christmas but have been building up supplies. Min 14 day food and for pets and us, plus things like toilet roll and toothpaste, medicines, I will be more comfortable when I get it to 28 days in case of multiple quarantines. At least half the days will be boring pasta with tuna or baked potatoes and beans.
people can be quarantined only for one of their group get the illness on day 10 and the whole thing starts again. I have also hidden some booze, sweets and other treats because it will get monotonous if this happens.
We are really lucky to have a large house and garden so we won't be under each other's toes and we will be able to have a wander outside. Plus both me and my husband can work from home so again better off than most. Obviously hoping that we don't have to use it.

MelanieFrontage · 29/02/2020 20:01

I’ve just checked my stock cupboard and I appear to have 18 tins of tuna [hmmm] 😂
In my defence my mum did give me 5 tins the other day because she bought a multi pack instead of 1 tin and she doesn’t even like tuna so gawd knows what she wanted the one tin for 😆

A lot of my being organised is actually as a result of being disorganised and not checking what we are running low on and just adding my usuals to my online shopping basket hence having a plentiful stock of pasta, rice, tinned tomatoes , mince, chicken etc.

sleepingpup · 29/02/2020 20:27

Have all the " it's just media hype" never actually had plain old FLU?!!!!

i've never felt as crap as when l " just had flu". And it lasted for about a month! I was lai out with it. I was a single person then but now I share responsibility for 4 dc and a dog.

I'm not getting organised for End of Days but just the possibility that DH or I or both feel totally SHITE but are able to manage and ride it out.

No having to "rush out" for stuff and scrabble to get basics when you feel like death and are infectious to others. And no having to leave some one else at home who is ill while you go get stuff.

So I'm getting that stuff in. Paracetamol, Loo roll, xtra store cupboard food, etc More stocking up than preparing for an Alien Invasion.

To make life easier and take responsibility for my kids welfare.

If it doesn't hit ( I'm making no predictions). Guess what ? we just use it up gradually.

When I went to pick up my Click n' Collect groceries today the guys there said they were crazy busy. All Tuna, long life milk, tinned food etc they said.

So with regard to the OP. " don't know anyone in RL doing it". You def do.

SusanneLinder · 29/02/2020 20:56

Oh you will know people in Real life doing it, they probably just won't tell you.😂. I admitted to it at work and found another colleague stating she was doing same.
Two days later, they found out a colleague in other office was back from Italy ( not the closed towns) and then off they went to Tesco to get extra stuff.

Sofonisba · 29/02/2020 20:57

Britain really needs to embrace bidets.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 29/02/2020 21:12

You can easily install the butt shower😁

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/02/2020 21:59

Ive got 7 large boxes of shreddies

No idea how that happened

12 toothpastes

7 shampoos

And thats before any sort of prepping takes place

14 bottles of whiskey...8 gin....2 vodka...i could go on Grin

ElderAve · 29/02/2020 22:14

Don't want to worry you Rufis but Shreddies were the only thing I could keep down in my first preganancy. 18yo DS1 still loves them!

ElderAve · 29/02/2020 22:15

If things do get desperate, you wont want the neighbours to know you stocked up!

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/02/2020 22:29

If ds2 is pregnant im going to beat him with a box of shreddies 😩

Actually thats a good point elder....I shouldn’t have bragged about my shreddies stash
