There is not one person I know in real life that is prepping for a coronavirus outbreak. In fact, no one I speak to even mentions the threat of the virus.

Of course we know of it as the hysteria surrounding it is all over the news / social media, but aibu to think preppers only exist on mumsnet?

@gamerchick you need to calm down. Your last sentence makes you sound bonkers

Brilliant Grin ah you properly have made me laugh OP, cheers man.

I'd love to know why it makes people feel uneasy. It's not intruding on your life in any way. Why do your care what other people do?

Personally I don't take the pampered life provided to me for granted. We're very privilaged in this country.

WhoKnew19 · 26/02/2020 21:16

I am prepping, but apart from close family (who are also doing the same), haven't told anyone IRL.

strawberrylipgloss · 26/02/2020 21:17

Considering how empty shops get when there's a bit of snow, it's only wise to be ready imho.
If I worked in healthcare I might prep for Coronavirus.

Notlong20 · 26/02/2020 21:20

@OrangeSamphire I have not called anyone a nutter for prepping.

It’s just not something anyone I know is doing, so wondered if it was the same for others!

I have just stocked up on some paracetamol. But am not stockpiling food p.

KaptenKrusty · 26/02/2020 21:21

It’s getting insane on here I can’t face reading anymore of them so am now starting to just block anything with the corona virus in the title 😂

I also haven’t heard anyone mention it much in real life - I’ve joked about it a few time’s when I’ve coughed or someone at work has and have said “oh hope it’s not the corona”

I’m going on holiday with a few people to Japan in a few weeks and nobody from my group has mentioned anything about the virus/ possibly not going either !

So yes it does seem like the mass panic is mostly contained to Mumsnet 😂🤭

AllPointsNorth · 26/02/2020 21:21

I see myself more as Badger in Wind in the Willows. Able to wait out winter in the Wild Wood because of his wonderful store rooms.

CalamityJune · 26/02/2020 21:22

I think lots of people do it to a degree. They just call it "being organised".

Most of my family have things like torches, candles, etc in case of a power cut. I've kept a battery operated radio for the same reason as I live in an area prone to flooding.

I try to keep on top of having everyday medicines in, as there's nothing worse than feeling poorly and having to drag yourself to the shops.

I don't stockpile food or anything.

porple · 26/02/2020 21:22

i don’t know anyone in real life who preps

PersonaNonGarter · 26/02/2020 21:22

On some level, even Preppers know that they are nutters. They want things to go wrong so they can finally be vindicated for their choices. usually because they are insecure in the choices they have made in Normal Life.

BrieAndChilli · 26/02/2020 21:23

In the past few weeks we’ve had locally (as in here or next town or so over)

Floods - water treatment plant was also flooded so no water, town ran out of drinking water even though there was water everywhere!!
Threat of snow (and if it does snow we are snowed in with no shops within walking distance in our village)
Power cuts - whole village had power cut one night and the next night the other end of the village had another which resulted in a surge that caused TVs to smoke Anne broke boilers etc, took over 36 hours for everyone to have power and western power had to go round to each house to repair what they could and take other things away for replacement.

Add into that the threat of brexit and the Coronavirus (either being ill, 2 week enforces quarantine or just the shelves being stopped bare) then it’s just being prudent to make sure you have a stock of food, water, medicine and toiletries in.

Plus there’s also the fact that supply chains may be compromised due to half of China being shut down/materials being diverted to make masks etc

AngelsOnHigh · 26/02/2020 21:24

The usual things. Hand washing all the time. Being aware not to touch yes, nose mouth with unwashed hands. etc. etc.

Having said that, it is second nature for me. I have worked in public health for 15 years, came in close contact with numerous diseases, all types of flues .

I haven't had one sick day in all that time. No more have DH or DC.

It's always been drummed in to me that hygiene is the best defence against all becoming ill. Plus in the work place, it's essential that we ae aware that we don't want to take anything nasty home with us.

eeeyoresmiles · 26/02/2020 21:25

OP none of my friends would know me as someone who preps. Mainly because of mistaken attitudes like this:

Preppers are deluded who probably believe any tin foil hat shit that is posted online.

Why would anyone admit to any kind of preparing when they know they're going to be written off like that? (Personally I am the last likely person I know to believe in conspiracy theories.) And some people seem to think that prepping and not needing it within three months is a sign of was a stupid thing to do, thus missing the point by miles.

Despite that I have still suggested it to other people, because I do worry for them, but only in a very low-key way.

I think if you're relying on noticing other people getting a bit of stuff in, before starting it yourself, you'll probably be well behind lots of the friends you're so sure aren't doing it.

AllPointsNorth · 26/02/2020 21:26

And people with responses like Persona is why you won’t locate preppers in real life.

userxx · 26/02/2020 21:27

I can't stop thinking of corona fizzy drinks from the mid80's

Theholidayarmadillo4 · 26/02/2020 21:31

I think some people do prep- I often don't have more than a pack of paracetamol in or one pack of tissues, whereas most organised people have more than one of those things.

A few years ago like the pp above we were flooded while I had a stomach bug. We were flooded into the building so couldn't leave and water was pumped up to our flat but electricity failed across the entire town so we didn't have water. We found that really hard and now with kids at home I don't want to be in that situation ever again, so we do 'prep' ie have a few weeks of tinned and frozen in so we don't struggle. That would be particularly helpful if we have to self isolate because of the new coronavirus. What will you do op if you have to stay indoors?

PixieDustt · 26/02/2020 21:32

Hahahaha you nutter!

MotherOfDragonite · 26/02/2020 21:32

YABU -- why do you think surgical masks and stock of antibacterial hand gel have practically run out already?

(Spoiler: it's not just the Mumsnutters -- although it's very traditional for mothers to keep the larder well stocked for all emergencies! Wink)

Nowayorhighway · 26/02/2020 21:32

I don’t think they’re purely on MN but I also don’t know anyone IRL this crazy Grin.

Alyic · 26/02/2020 21:33

Perhaps the brexit supplies store will come in useful for the Coronavirus prepping?

MotherOfDragonite · 26/02/2020 21:33

Also if you check official government advice, they're suggesting that everyone do this.

SmileyClare · 26/02/2020 21:33

I did wonder why seasoned Preppers need to start more prepping after all the prep for Brexit?
Is it a separate prep cupboard from the Brexit stockpile?

GPwife2411 · 26/02/2020 21:34

Loving all the pop psychology on this thread. There's a massive difference between buying extra food and common meds that will get used up anyway, and building a fallout bunker and a gun collection!

AnneJeanne · 26/02/2020 21:34

Actually, I have prepared for the Coronavirus because I have type 2 diabetes and I don’t know much about the virus so want to be prepared. My husband laughed at me but I bought enough food and supplies for 3 weeks quarantine.

PlomBear · 26/02/2020 21:34

None of my friends, family or work colleagues have mentioned it.
