Did I really read in the mail earlier that they are having a public information campaign on hand washing NEXT WEEK!

FelicityFebruary · 27/02/2020 21:39

They being UK authorities.

It's woeful if true.

GorkyMcPorky · 27/02/2020 21:40

Tell you what, I wouldn't have Matt Hancock's job for the world.

donbelieveit · 27/02/2020 21:41

Can we not close schools and see how it affects the adult population first

donbelieveit · 27/02/2020 21:42

Like they can give the NHS money in the meantime

KahlanRahl · 27/02/2020 21:42

First case of corona has been confirmed in the Netherlands.

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 21:43

Eee I agree, very strong message on TV etc.

The messages have been appalling.

Parker231 · 27/02/2020 21:43

Who is going to look after the school children if you close the schools?

donbelieveit · 27/02/2020 21:44

Their mums

LangClegsInSpace · 27/02/2020 21:44

It looks to me like our government, along with some others, are just paying lip service to 'containment' to prevent panic. If this virus is contageous before people get symptoms then most of the containment efforts don't make much sense except as symbolic gestures. I reckon they've looked at how swine flu panned out and have decided to cut to the chase and just let it run its course.

I reckon the other case announced today is probably from London (was sent to Royal Free London hospital) but they won't say so because they can't afford for London to panic. If not this case then I don't believe there are no other unrecorded cases wandering around London. We have 3 airports (4 if you count Luton) and Eurostar. We have an absolute fuckton of visitors from all over the world arriving every day and the first thing the majority of them do is get on public transport and travel into town. This is before even considering Londoners themselves and where they may recently have been on holiday, family visits or business trips.

The conditions are similar in all our major cities.

Perhaps this the right strategy, to let it run its course while keeping everyone as calm as possible. China has employed extreme containment measures, far beyond anything that would be acceptable in the UK, but has it worked?

I hope there's a better strategy than either of these and I hope someone finds it soon.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 27/02/2020 21:45

Their mums??? Are you fucking serious? Their mums? Do children not have fathers too?

Parker231 · 27/02/2020 21:46

@donbelieveit - they will be work unless you’re proposing to close businesses as well?

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 21:48

I'd be more happy with the... Run its course stragety if I was reassured of beds and medical equipment being available to the massive UK population.

I've said before what might be a treatable wheeze in dd, usual a and e could potentially be exacerbated into something very dangerous if there is no equipment etc due to mass corona virus.

It's the knock on effects and wider implications that we know and those we don't know about.

donbelieveit · 27/02/2020 21:49

Their dad's could step up or find a way round it I don't want our kids getting pneumonia and no medical treatment

OhMargo · 27/02/2020 21:49

Since the Brexit thread is waning a bit now (was great in its time) the Covid19 is the next big thing.

Bring it on.

Not knocking Brexit thread, it may rejuvenate soon! But in the meantime, in the hiatus, we have this thread.

Cam77 · 27/02/2020 21:50

Cases in France doubled from 19 to 38 in the last day. A lot of heads still in the sand at this point, that might change in the next week.

FelicityFebruary · 27/02/2020 21:51

If you look at WHO press conference with Bruce Aylward he said cases are being reduced by China's policies which he praised and said other countries should learn from it.

justchecking1 · 27/02/2020 21:51

Their dad's could step up or find a way round it I don't want our kids getting pneumonia and no medical treatment

Probably best not suggest their mums then, since this mum at least is one of those people who would be providing that medical treatment....

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 27/02/2020 21:51

Their mums

My boss will love that.

What if "mums" are working in A&E? Or swabbing potential patients? Or on the beat as a cop? Or stocking up the tins and bottled water in the local supermarket? Or any of the other essential things that will still have to go on in the event of an epidemic.

Ciwirocks · 27/02/2020 21:53

I personally think that efforts to contain do make sense if only to slow the spread so that we have a cat in hells chance to deal with the number of severe cases in our overstretched NHS

donbelieveit · 27/02/2020 21:53

If the government are our friends then why aren't we given the option

Twixes · 27/02/2020 21:54

I'm so worried about frontline staff. How are they going to cope??

I need to keep my anxiety in check but when you read 34% of Italian patients are in hospital, coupled with the rapid rise in diagnoses it's absolutely frightening.

Motorina · 27/02/2020 21:56

If schools were closed and 'the mums' had to stay off work with them, we'd lose 75% of our clinical teams overnight. We might be able to maintain part time emergency cover from one or two locations, but routine care would just... stop.

Parker231 · 27/02/2020 21:58

Let’s have all the fathers off work looking after their DC’s - they won’t get paid. Can’t see substantial school closures happening.

Twixes · 27/02/2020 22:00

I just read that Pope Francis is sick after meeting with coronavirus sufferers.
