From the last thread...

@cheninblanc

Latest breaking news tweet I've just seen confirms they've under reported cases in China and its confirmed they have.

What was the breaking news tweet that suggested this?

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 18:16

I don't remember seeing any Portugal cases but it's inevitable there will be with them being connected to Spain. Quite a few cases there now.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 18:16

So we have had an email from school including a letter from the council giving advice.

It says the following:

As of today (25th February) advice for returning travellers is as follows;

1) If you have returned from the following areas since February 19, call NHS111 to inform them of your recent travel, stay indoors and avoid contact with other people even if you do not have symptoms:

Iran
Specific lockdown areas in Northern Italy (as designated by the Government of Italy: In the Lombardy Region: Bertonico; Casalpusterlengo; Castelgerundo; Castiglione D'Adda; Codogno; Fombio; Maleo; San Fiorano; Somaglia; and Terranova dei Passerini In the Veneto Region: VoA map has been published to help detail the relevant areas.)
Daegu or Cheongdo (Republic of Korea)
Hubei province, China (returned in the past 14 days)

2) If you have returned from the following areas since February 19th:
Northern Italy (see map)
Vietnam
Cambodia
Laos
Myanmar

Or If you have returned to the UK from any of the following areas in the last 14 days: Other parts of China outside Hubei province
Thailand
Japan
Republic of Korea
Hong Kong
Taiwan
Singapore
Malaysia
Macau
You should stay indoors at home and avoid contact with other people immediately and call NHS111 only if you develop symptoms.

That seems to go further than any advice I've seen anywhere else.

It's curious that Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam are on the list if you have symptoms despite their being a lack of reports of coronavirus there. Do they know / suspect something we don't?

KenAdams · 26/02/2020 18:18

@ofwarren can you link to some of the accounts so I can follow them please?

I put this on another thread but probably worth adding here too - I've started this new free short course on Epidemics and Pandemics and it's really quite interesting to do especially at the moment in case it's of interest to anyone else www.coursera.org/learn/epidemic-pandemic-outbreak/home/welcome.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 18:20

Correction, letter isn't from council its public health England.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 18:23

Try @BNODesk and @ASBreakingNews Ken they are generally up to an hour in front of the MSM. if you ask the account for the source, they will generally give it to you, or you can search for it yourself bearing in mind it will be in whatever language the country with the case speaks.

bigfootfred · 26/02/2020 18:24

I'm due to be going to a large international conference in London in a couple of weeks. Should I not go?!

Originalyellowbelly · 26/02/2020 18:25

Have there been anymore cases in Iran? They seemed to be one of the worse affected countries yesterday.

AlexaShutUp · 26/02/2020 18:28

RedToothBrush, wow. So Public Health England is advising people who have visited any of those countries to self isolate for 14 days, whether they're symptomatic or not? That's a bit worrying, given that DH is in one of said countries at present and soon to be traveling to another.Confused

cheninblanc · 26/02/2020 18:29

Wheresmymojo on twitter from coronavirus alarm

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 18:31

@wheresmymojo There's an article on it in Daily Wail now. SHangdong province numbers up to 52x whar has been reported

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 18:31

I've not seen an Iran update yet. They generally come in all at once. I'm expecting there will be one this evening.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 18:33

So Public Health England is advising people who have visited any of those countries to self isolate for 14 days, whether they're symptomatic or not? That's a bit worrying, given that DH is in one of said countries at present and soon to be traveling to another.

Only people who have been to the lock down high risk specific areas need to do anything if they have no symptoms.

Otherwise if outside the hot spots only if they have symptoms.

JustDanceAddict · 26/02/2020 18:35

I wasn’t unduly worried but I am getting more concerned about it now it’s spread to Europe.
Normal flu kills 1000s per year but I suppose the difference is that those who are vulnerable get vaccinated.
The thought of self-isolating in your own house (and trying not to spread it to your family) is horrific.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 18:35

To clarify: inform 111 if you've been to Iran, locked down italy, the South Korea hot-spot or hubei since 19th Feb even if you have no symptoms

Otherwise if you have symptoms for all other places on the list.

Notthebloodygym · 26/02/2020 18:36

What about Milan? There are cases there, plus fashion week just ended.

MrsStrangerThing · 26/02/2020 18:38

I am a HCP and the last guidance we got was yesterday. It says we only need to self-isolate if we:

Have travelled from the Hubei province in the last 2 weeks.
Have direct contact with a known case without appropriate PPE
Have worked/visited in a healthcare setting anywhere in China

Seems very basic compared to the schools advice previously posted!

PlomBear · 26/02/2020 18:39

How does self isolation work? If you live in a flat share or with your family, the other people can’t just move out.

How do you get food if you live on your own?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 18:40

Someone needs to get a grip of the Guidance immediately. I don't care if our health minister and his team have to stay up all night. They need some PHE officicals and some expert virologists and come up with consistent advice for the public, specific schools advice and some for health care professionals.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 18:41

#ITALY— #coronavirus cases rise to 400

AlexaShutUp · 26/02/2020 18:41

RedToothBrush, thanks for clarifying. That's a bit more reassuring.

Can't help but worry though. DH due to fly to Japan in a couple of weeks, and I cannot help but suspect that there is a lot of under-reporting going on there at the moment. They aren't known for their openness and transparency in a crisis, and I've read reports that they have conducted very few tests for the virus so far.

MrsStrangerThing · 26/02/2020 18:42

Plombear, you can still get online shopping delivered. The guidance I got from work says the rest of your household don't have to restrict their activities, which makes no sense to me!

LittleSwede · 26/02/2020 18:45

Thanks for the new thread.

Wow, how did it get to 400 cases in Italy do quickly!.

LittleSwede · 26/02/2020 18:46

Sky news had a colour coded 'map' of the guidance for each country earlier which looked quite easy to interpret. It looked like it had changed since yesterday though?

PlomBear · 26/02/2020 18:47

Okay I found this:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-51506729

“It says you shouldn't share household items with someone in isolation and, if possible, they should have a separate bathroom and toilet.

The advice also says to clean household surfaces daily, using disposable gloves.

You should stay in a well-ventilated room with a window that can be open, separate from the other people in your home.

Ask for help if you need groceries, other shopping or medication - it's OK to have friends, family or delivery drivers drop off supplies to get you through the two weeks.”

Seeing that the virus can live on surfaces for up to nine days surely the people you will have contact with will get it?

Also, how are you meant to know the difference between corona and a cold? Surely a million people have a cold right now in the UK?
