What’s worrying is that Iran has 139 cases, but 19 fatalities: so that’s a 13% fatality rate (mind you there are probably more cases out there not counted)

LittleSwede · 26/02/2020 20:18

Just heard thar the Norwegian with confirmed CV is self isolating in their own home. Shouldn't they be in isolation in hospital or something? I know the Swedes who were repatriated from Wuhan a couple of weeks ago were also told to stay at home for two ways. The government just trusted that they would do as they told (and to be fair, most Swedes probably would!) This doesn't seem in line with what the UK and other European countries have been doing. I'm Swedish so feel entitled to be critical of my own country Grin

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 20:19

Allax that sounds horrific.
Can you ask to be tested??
So much going around right at this moment.

In trying to clear out my bedroom in case it becomes sick bay. I'm making list of foods to feed me if I become ill.

EnidBlyton · 26/02/2020 20:19

i work with elderly and worry that they will catch it and pass it to me and vice versa.

WaterSheep · 26/02/2020 20:19

Dylan It's clear that Iran isn't being transparent with their reporting.

NutellaQuest · 26/02/2020 20:21

Can anyone interpret the flu tracker? ? @ofwarren I am wondering what that is looking like this year. I've found the online tracker but not really sure what it's saying. Grin

smotheroffive · 26/02/2020 20:21

Get tested Alloxa!

KenDodd · 26/02/2020 20:22

Allaxaonoma

I've read that symptoms are a dry cough (no mucus) and a dry nose, not sneezing or running?

Knockalockin · 26/02/2020 20:23

@poppytime. I wonder if it's down to resources? The person who came today was volunteering.

WaterSheep · 26/02/2020 20:26

The person who came today was volunteering.

It's not very reassuring that we're already relying on volunteers to swab and test people.

Twixes · 26/02/2020 20:26

@Destinydaughter I was thinking that about garlic in particular! I think we get 90% of our garlic from China.

Garlic is super easy to grow. As far as I know all you need to do is: Split a bulb into individual cloves and plant with the pointy side up. Cover with about an inch of soil.

Twixes · 26/02/2020 20:28

I just read it takes 9 months to grow!!! Realistically that's not really an option l.

Glittercandle · 26/02/2020 20:29

LittleSwede I think self isolating at home is better than being in hospital if well enough, less risk of passing it on to others.

Update on Italy

The virus has now spread in more than half of the Italian's regions
Lombardy: 305 cases and 9 deaths
Veneto: 87 cases and 2 deaths
Emilia Romagna: 47 cases and 1 death
Piedmont: 1 case (2 retracted as false positives)
Lazio: 3 cases
Liguria: 6 cases
Tuscany: 2 cases
Sicily: 3 cases
Marche: 2 cases (both in Pesaro)
Puglia: 1 case (a 33-year-old Taranto resident who had visited Codogno in Lombardy)
Alto Adige: 1 case.
A total of at least 35 cases are currently in intensive care.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/02/2020 20:31

Are Italy just more on it with testing?

We really need some clear figures of number of tests carried out vs population size.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 20:32

A case on the Canary island La Gomera

LangClegsInSpace · 26/02/2020 20:33

Checking in because I'm starting to get a bit twitchy. I live in London, it's only a matter of time isn't it?

I'm not worried about my health and the only person close to me who is particularly vulnerable is my mum who is barely going out at the moment anyway because of COPD.

I'm worried about the knock on effects. I think big cities could turn to shit very quickly whether they try to put us on lockdown or let the virus run its course.

Knockalockin · 26/02/2020 20:33

@Watersheep. She could have meant she had volunteered to do this on top of her usual lab job, as paid?
Either way I didn't ask any further

WaterSheep · 26/02/2020 20:33

We really need some clear figures of number of tests carried out vs population size.

Italy: 9,462 tests, of which 458 positive (4.8% positivity rate)

Poppytime · 26/02/2020 20:33

@knock yes I think it's almost definitely down to resources, she sounded swamped. She also didn't mute me properly and I overheard her pass a call onto a colleague from a well known army training school so they are obviously getting calls from all over

TheVanguardSix · 26/02/2020 20:34

Iran will not have the means to contain this virus in the way other countries might. It's been horsewhipped by sanctions, crippling its economy, thus affecting its supply of/access to medicines and medical equipment, which is where European pharmaceuticals kick in with their aid. But wait. We might need that aid. Between sanctions, a crippled economy, and the lack of transparency in reporting its coronavirus cases, it's a perfect storm really.

HeIenaDove · 26/02/2020 20:34

Lang DH has COPD too. I share your worry.

Mittens030869 · 26/02/2020 20:35

I do have a dry cough, no mucus, sore throat and have had a temperature (average 38, highest 38.6) for 6 days. I'm also breathless. I had pneumonia last year and I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It just isn't improving.

I haven't travelled, I don't know anyone who has, there's no known cases of coronavirus in my city, Leeds, as far as I know. There's no one that I know of at school that have been skiing in Italy.

It's probably a normal seasonal virus, but it's quite unnerving.

idontusuallypanic · 26/02/2020 20:36

Got this from school today. Hmm

I think we get 90% of our garlic from China.

Do we? I thought it mostly came from southern Europe. I just bought a bag of 10 bulbs from Morrisons and it's from Spain. I can't remember ever seeing China on the label.
