To be worried about coronavirus part 4

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:

another case of #Coronavirus #COVID19 in #Pakistan

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 17:00

@NathanNathan - this is the dilemma - I think your DS should keep his job but the bar couldn't pay him if they weren't open and the government simply can't afford to pay everyone's wages.

It's hideous isn't it? Ideally I think we should have a month long UK lock down now but that's not going to happen. It has such enormous economic impact that I can't see it happening until it really has to - by which time it will be too late.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 17:01

We have not booked holiday yet for this year. Now not planning to until things are a bit clearer. We are booked to do a few things with crowds though and I have flights to the Netherlands for eurovision though.

Don't really want to potentially waste any more money at this stage.

Parker231 · 26/02/2020 17:04

A shutdown in the UK won’t happen without employees getting a guarantee they will be paid. At the moment it isn’t necessary in the UK.

SubordinateThatClause · 26/02/2020 17:07

I think we should extend the Easter holidays. Close down schools for a month.

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 17:10

Agree yours Tunbridge.

I'd rather take preventative measures to stem it, at least from major mixing hot spots and simply buy more time for warmer weather, less flu, a vaccine etc

Parker231 · 26/02/2020 17:11

If schools are closed for a month after Easter, what about working parents?

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 17:12

Yy subordinate.

Where possible...

FAQs · 26/02/2020 17:12

And GCSEs!

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 17:13

Lots of slack everywhere should be cut in extreme cases... Rent, mortgages etc...

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 17:14

Oh goodness yes!!

If pandemic takes hold will gcse go ahead?

How would they do it if say half pupils off sick or quarantine...

cheninblanc · 26/02/2020 17:20

Latest breaking news tweet I've just seen confirms they've under reported cases in China and its confirmed they have.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 17:23

Is that good or bad on China front - if they have unreported mild cases - good for CFR I presume, if it's serious cases or generally because they are still in a massive spike - then OH SH*T

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 17:27

German's health minister has just said the country is at the start of an epidemic and to prepare for a pandemic.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 17:30

Israel health ministry calls Israelis to re-consider flighing abroad.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 17:31

FFS. DCs school had ski trip to Northern Italy over half term.

Being on top of this I emailed school about it and was fobbed off with "following government guidance". An email to all parents followed shortly thereafter. They've just returned confirming that DS2's best friend (who went on the trip) is now in isolation after feeling dreadful all day yesterday but soldiering on. DS2 sat next to him for most of the day. Angry Wine

WRT large gatherings and travel, the so called 'super spreader' from Brighton had travelled from Singapore to France and then France to London with EasyJet. No reports of any of those passengers who were in close contact with him during flights having caught the virus or those that he came in contact with at a local pub and there was a mention of a taxi driver. So just makes you wonder how this thing actually spreads as you would imagine an aircraft full of people in close proximity being an ideal germ sharing situation but it seems not. Hmm

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 17:37

@BackInTime Agreed but just maybe he was a super duper handwasher too?

Delatron · 26/02/2020 17:37

Those were my exact thoughts about the Brighton super spreader (and the other lady doctor who flew back from France with the virus). Nobody on either flights seems to have caught it despite air circulating etc.

I’m not cancelling any holidays. I will just be careful with touching surfaces. Then yes it might not be pleasant If there’s a quarantine abroad but it’s a risk I’ll take.

I’m expecting towns in the U.K. to eventually have more cases than some holiday destinations.

cultkid · 26/02/2020 17:38

I was of the opinion It wasn't a problem
But I'm worried about drug and food supply problems

I have just added a heap of freezer food and Tins onto tomorrow delivery and I have also ordered 12 boxes of my sons milk powder

Ciwirocks · 26/02/2020 17:38

Hasa I get your frustration. I have relatives returning from Milan and in my opinion should self isolate because it’s too soon to know if they are going to get ill or not. If they do they will already have spread it around, I think schools are being irresponsible letting kids who have been to north Italy back in, they should stay off at least for the rest of this week so we can see how things pan out there. Most of the people from the at risk areas who have travelled will have passed through Milan airport

SirVixofVixHall · 26/02/2020 17:39

So in China, in the affected areas, have some people simply not caught the virus at all, in spite of being exposed ? Or does everybody catch it as no natural immunity ?

eeeyoresmiles · 26/02/2020 17:41

@HasaDigaEebowai aargh - has this child been swabbed then? Do you know when you might find out if they're positive?

BackInTime · 26/02/2020 17:43

@HasaDigaEebowai DS is also just back from Italy. Said today that a few people from the trip are off sick but unsure if they are actually ill or still exhausted from the week away. School are following PHE guidance saying it's business as usual. DS is now a bit sniffly, has been on and off for weeks but no cough or temperature. Do I assume the worst here?
