idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:

Sorry correction - Western countries, not EU countries

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:25

There is no fixed number of ECMO beds in the UK. Whilst the centres that provide this service might have a nominal figure based on normal demand, they are usually able to increase the number if they have sufficient staff, available critical care beds and equipment.

There can only be a specific number of ECMO units surely...

Are you sure you mean ECMO and not ICU?

flissity · 26/02/2020 13:25

@DigitalGhost really! There seems to be hardly any mention of pregnant victims of it and how it could differ etc...
I am considering a HB this is my third so also worried about the other children bringing germs into the house with a young baby 😢

Ciwirocks · 26/02/2020 13:28

The only way I can see ecmo units being ‘freed up’ is by postponing planned surgeries if there is a risk they may need ecmo afterwards

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:29

I actually posted a link previously to an early study on pregnant women which was very positive.

I will dig it back out again if I can but so far the impact on pregnant women isn't particularly concerning...

flissity · 26/02/2020 13:36

@wheresmymojo thank you for finding that - I will give it a read 👍🏻

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 26/02/2020 13:37

There are only 5 ECMO units in the country (ie geographically) but I don’t know how many beds they each have. Not many, I would imagine.

DigitalGhost · 26/02/2020 13:37

@flissity this is my second and my DD is at nursery so not exactly old enough to understand the importance of hand washing.

I think I'm more worried about hospitals being completely filled with sick people around my due date. HB definitely isn't an option either.

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 13:39

@Poppytime, I'm really shocked that you've been told it's not worth bothering with the swab.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 13:43

I believe that ECMO units currently treat 200-300 people per annum. Not much use then for large numbers. Don’t know how many China have and whether they have used them for this virus.

Uptheshard · 26/02/2020 13:48

I'm.just back from milan. My 2.kids got sent home from school. And I'm sent home from work. We have slightly sore throats. But we are fine!!!
No news on how long we are excluded for.....

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:48

ECMO was used in China for the most critical cases.

I don't know how many they had to begin with but they imported an additional 81 machines in January to Wuhan so fair to say a lot more than our handful.

4 new cases of #coronavirus in #Liguria, #ITALY. All come from the hotel in #Alassio and have been admitted to the San Martino hospital.

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:50

ECMO is very much a last resort for the most severe cases.

It basically takes over the function of their heart and lungs to give them a final chance of recovery.

belay · 26/02/2020 13:52

Just gone past our children's hospital on the bus. There is a labelled "coronavirus pod" in the front car park

smellycoat · 26/02/2020 13:53

Hell Brokenbrit - how is your man today? My husband threatens to go to South Korea in a couple of weeks unless the British Consul advise him not to.

Tell me he is OK

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 13:55

Hubei Province has a lower population than U.K. I would imagine that perhaps they may have had say 50-80 already and these other ECMOs belonged to different provinces. Let’s say we have 5 per unit so 25 in the UK, they’re not really going to be any use other than for a select handful.

Is the Rugby match in Eire going ahead despite many calls for it to be postponed?

Abouttimemum · 26/02/2020 13:56

Supposed to be travelling to Tenerife in a couple of weeks. Any views? I presume plane loads if tourists are still travelling there every singe day and travel advice has not changed.
I generally don’t feel worried but I’ve already had family members telling us not to go and despite my gut instincts you can’t help but be affected by all of the news articles / comments from people who are terrified!!

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/02/2020 14:00

Abouttimemum I think you should just wait and see how things develop and decide closer to the time. And check your travel insurance so that you know what is covered and what isn't.

ajandjjmum · 26/02/2020 14:01

I thought the Ireland vs. Italy match was cancelled yesterday?

AvocadoOwl · 26/02/2020 14:01

@Abouttimemum I think my biggest concern re holidays at the moment would be finding myself in a lockdown situation overseas and unable to get home.

A lot can change in a few weeks, do you need to decide now? I'd sit tight for while and see what unfolds if you can.

Canshopwillshop · 26/02/2020 14:03

My DD is going to Normandy on a school trip this weekend. A couple of my friends are talking about pulling their kids from the trip which has unsettled me! School is following Government guidelines so at the moment the trip is still on.

My feeling is the way it currently stands, they are just as likely to catch the virus here as they are in France. I suppose there is a danger of being quarantined over there though.

Just wondered what people on here think?

Skyejuly · 26/02/2020 14:06

How old @Canshopwillshop
