To be worried about coronavirus part 4

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:
Youngatheart00 · 26/02/2020 14:55

To the poster further up the thread who mentioned air conditioning - I wondered this too. Surely the air is just being transferred between rooms and they’d be better off turning it off? I have stayed in h10 hotels before but I must say judging by how poorly they are dealing with this in terms of comms for guests, I’d think twice before staying again. I know the situation is far from their fault but they should be making more of an effort to inform people what is going on.

Frazzled2207 · 26/02/2020 14:56

I'm far more worried about the implications of schools and businesses closing than of actually getting the virus. I am self employed working as a contractor in a number of schools- if they close then basically I have no income.
Also if my kids school closes I will have to cancel most of my work to look after them. Closing schools etc has knock on effects. In some cases this will be appropriate but I hope the powers that be consider carefully whether or not these things are necessary.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 14:58

The hardest thing I think is the uncertainty. Just no idea at all how long this could affect us for. No idea whether we will be able to travel in 2 days, 2weeks or 2 months.
Too many unknowns and uncertainties. We may be on lock down for days or weeks.
I hate not being able to plan - I’m not booking a holiday, DD has qualified for a high level sports comp in May - no idea if she will be able to go especially if there has been no training before hand due to lockdowns. She’s a swimmer so can see saying goodbye to pools for some time.
This made me think of other athletes potentially training for National events which are normally attended for Olympic qualification. People train together as teams - how would this work. For some like swimmers requiring specialist facilities missing a couple of weeks will ruin their season potentially miss their only chance of Olympic or other glory. That’s tough.
DS has a school trip abroad in July - I’ve stopped paying for it, partly as I don’t think he would be going in any case but this made my mind up.
What about weddings and social gatherings? Very hard to plan.
I have a concert next week inside thousands due there and a child at theatre. No idea if they will be on or if we should go.
The list of uncertainties continues.

icecreamscoops · 26/02/2020 15:09

@YoursTunbridgeWells completely agree the uncertainty is so hard. My daughter is supposed to be going with school to watch a big football match this week....is it a good idea?

Parker231 · 26/02/2020 15:36

We are continuing with travel plans ( have good insurance). Holidays are booked and unless FCO states you should not travel to those countries, we will go ahead with the holidays. DT’s are at Uni - DD is currently on a placement in Belgium and DS is going to Singapore this summer for his graduate placement- they both are continuing with plans for these unless they are cancelled.

DH’s parents live in Canada and they have booked to come to us in London for the summer so hopefully they won’t have to change their plans.

TokyoSushi · 26/02/2020 15:42

We're going to Crufts for the first time in a couple of weeks, lots of people from around the world there... I would be so disappointed if it's cancelled/postponed!

ritatherockfairy · 26/02/2020 16:01

Be interesting to see a chart showing how quickly infection rates are increasing in Italy - has it levelled off? Is it too soon to say (probably)? That's probably the best proxy for what will happen when it hits here. As someone that has worked with the Chinese system in the past - I certainly wouldn't assume we can "cope" any better. We simply have the advantage of knowing it is on the way.

NathanNathan · 26/02/2020 16:01

It's difficult, because plans being cancelled has a lot of monetary and personal cost.

But, the report from the team who just went and assessed the Chinese response was pretty clear. The only way the virus is beaten is by people changing their behaviour, and that includes societal shifts like not travelling and avoiding large gatherings, as well as of course washing hands.

Sad
NemophilistRebel · 26/02/2020 16:05

Would you fly right now even if it was to a non affected area?

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 26/02/2020 16:08

I've not read the whole thread(s) and I've been avoiding the news a little due to my mind wondering.
However, I'm now getting a little concerned.
I'm too a frontline hcp and I have watched this week around 8 " Corona pods" being set up behind the carpark.
Added to that my totally laid back messaged me this morning concerned about a holiday to the states we have booked in early May.
Initially I said " no it will be fine " but on reading this thread and watching the news I'm not so certain.

Parker231 · 26/02/2020 16:08

Yes - I’m going to San Francisco for work on Sunday and to my parents in Belgium in the middle of March.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 26/02/2020 16:09
  • my totally laid back DH
YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 16:11

@NathanNathan agreed. At some point I will have to make those tough choices. But I am waiting for some direction.

I am sad about the concert - at this stage we are still going but we won't decide until the day. DH and I have had a horrific 4 months, and this was out treat - some time for just the two of us. We have waited and waited for this. But we won't go if it looks problematic.

Regarding sports training and events - I am hoping that the relevant governing bodies for the sports will issue guidance for all their clubs and events.

KoalasandRabbit · 26/02/2020 16:16

I would fly if I was sure I had good travel insurance and countries healthcare was good. Not very worried about getting it as statistically unlikely but would want to be sure not stranded / quarantined / in lockdown somewhere if possible and that tourist sites open. Also is it likely to be true country has no issue - some countries I would believe, others not.

woodencoffeetable · 26/02/2020 16:21

I was stuck in us after 9/11
was very expensive, all the extra nights accomodation, rental car etc.
travel insurance didn't cover it. but at least the airline flew us home with the next available plane.

www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1866094/thailand-has-3-new-coronavirus-cases-for-total-of-40-ministry

At the briefing, the health minister again discouraged Thais from unnecessary travel. "For the airlines, please reduce promotions," Mr Anutin said.

"Even though tickets are cheap, it could be your last holiday."

URGENT: #Pakistan reports first case of #Coronavirus

KoalasandRabbit · 26/02/2020 16:25

I was wondering about travel insurance covering missed flights due to lockdowns etc / refused flights if a temperature, suspect they don't cover.

NathanNathan · 26/02/2020 16:26

Reposting this, in bold.

HeIenaDove · 26/02/2020 16:42

I think we need to remember too that many people are very selfish and don't really care about others

Well as a country its what we voted for.

There is a strong eugenics, survival of the fittest, small Government ethos in power at the moment

It may well shift the power balance a little if poorer people start to get it

Claimant: i cant come to my appointment as im not well and scared i have this virus.

JC: you need to come in or face a sanction
Claimant: OK i will then. I cant risk no money no food etc.

OR they will say OK dont come in . We will put a note on your UC account

Then sanction him/her anyway which may mean the claimant STILL ends up going to the JC and demand to see someone.
Are the security guards really gong to physically eject him when that involves touch?

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:43

#Macedonia's Health Ministry confirmed the country's first #coronavirus case.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 16:46

@NathanNathan And that's where the issue is. We need leadership and direction - people will not change or be the ones to cancel their event if money or sporting prowess is at stake. Examples of where I think this guidance should come from:

The workplace - all non-essential travel, WFH if possible
Schools/education settings - cancel all international trips and all large gathering trips, no more assemblies. Possibly cancel all school buses/transport (though would make it hard for some to get to school if not impossible)
Public Transport - Government domain - they could urge people not to travel unless essential. They could shut tube, trains and buses. (Though unlikely due to economics)
Sports clubs to advise - about fixtures and training. Anything large scale or international would need ministerial approval.
Venues - bars, nightclubs and concerts - Ideally the host should cancel or Culture Minister should advise people not to attend
Large scale shows - eg Crufts, Wedding fairs etc. - Again this would probably require advise from government
Travel - from Government/workplace if applicable
Shops- only supermarkets and pharmacies/essentials like hardware so B&q Types to stay open - Again Government (would be very unpopular for economy)

I can see some high level guidance would be helpful and far easier to start changes now than suddenly end up in lockdown for months. But there are huge economic implications to preventing the public from mixing - whether that be shopping, socialising, sporting etc etc.

Parents and teachers, @PHE_uk has updated guidance to help education settings respond to #COVID19 See more here: t.co/JPM6W1CAmE #coronavirus

I agree Tunbridge. But then it comes back to, my DS works in a bar. Which should be closed.
What happens to him?
