I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:

AT work. Not at least work.

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 26/02/2020 12:57

Watching PMQ. Anyone else notice he didn’t answer how many ECMO beds there are?

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 12:57

Here is a link to the whole thing - I can't recommend watching it enough TBH.

Starts 10 mins in...

So my DH has been ill since Sunday, sore throat, cough, temperature but not full on fever. He is worse at night. Don’t think flu, as he is eating lightly, although he could have a mild dose I suppose. Dds have coughs. I am tight chested and on the edge of wheezy but I had a cold last week.
None of us have been abroad. Dh did go to London on the train a couple of weeks ago. There hasn’t seemed any reason to worry, as I assume this is just a standard virus. I tend to be the one who gets the most ill with anything and so far I am ok apart from slight chestyness.

So when should one worry about random bugs like this ? Chances of him having picked up CV are minute I imagine, but how are people supposed to judge ?

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 12:57

Testing has been rolled out to more laboratories and also plans for wider commercial diagnostic testing. Circa 12 private companies. Global search for a by the bed testing facility - does not yet exist.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 12:57

@wheresmymojo I agree - China have done far far more than I appreciated.
However, certain individuals there did try to cover it up at the start and whistleblowers were not listened to. That wasted time has cost them dearly.
There are political ramifications to support China now - you can't criticise an then expect to share their knowledge and R&D on this.

NathanNathan · 26/02/2020 12:58

@AcocadoOwl but does it paint a worrying or not picture? I'm worried watching it may make me more anxious not less. Sad

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 12:58

Anyone else notice he didn’t answer how many ECMO beds there are?

Glaring omission IMO

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 12:59

Well put it this way - so few that Wales don't have one in the whole country

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:00

Nathan

I wouldn't watch it if you're anxious.

I'm not (wasn't) anxious and had to have a drink afterwards and only drink a few times a year

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 13:02

Question re those with no symptoms - Does he recognise the confusion? What about being paid when self isolated? Will FCO change guidance for travel insurance purposes for Italy?

"concerns about under reporting are right. Don't recognise some of the clinical observations or the idea that we should change travel advice. We have to base on clinical advice from experts. Clinical advice is not to do thermal detection since you get a lot of false positives."

"Self isolation on medical advice is considered sickness for employment purposes"

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 13:02

Another swerve re another beds question

NathanNathan · 26/02/2020 13:06

So can anyone clear up this question:
^
In numbers from China where they're confident they're capturing most of the mild cases etc, what do the critical and death % come out as?^

Shakespearesbrother · 26/02/2020 13:06

Will the germs stay live for long in Tenerife? I thought heat kills germs pretty quickly. I may be barking up the wrong tree though!

AvocadoOwl · 26/02/2020 13:08

It does and it doesn't @NathanNathan. I think we were all hoping to hear that China's figures were inaccurate (in our favour) and that doesn't appear to be the case, so that is undoubtedly concerning. BUT I think there are a lot of hugely reassuring things about it too- I found myself feeling better simply by understanding more about all the amazing steps China have taken. The overriding message was that other countries CAN affect outcomes by putting in place effective measures, by putting the work into painstaking contact tracing and so on. There's no good just shrugging shoulders and accepting our fate- action needs to be taken and plenty of it.

Populations need to get on board with measures that governments will need to take and that comes with awareness and education.

It IS scary but I'm in the 'better the devil we know camp' and there is clearly a lot of knowledge and experience in China that we can benefit from- that's a positive thing.

NathanNathan · 26/02/2020 13:09

Thank you Avocado. I wish I had more faith in our government to do that.

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:15

More on ECMO.

I suspect each of these centres will have one machine but I'm trying to see if I can actually validate that

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-wales-45409281

flissity · 26/02/2020 13:16

Is anyone else on here pregnant? I am due end of May.

Anyone else considering a home birth purely to avoid hospital? In the event things get worse over here in next couple of months.. I know that it’s unlikely they will take over maternity wards, I just mean to avoid potentially infected people in hospital, public areas etc..

Goodnightandgoodluck · 26/02/2020 13:16

There is no fixed number of ECMO beds in the UK. Whilst the centres that provide this service might have a nominal figure based on normal demand, they are usually able to increase the number if they have sufficient staff, available critical care beds and equipment.

On the downside ECMO services are generally in high demand at this time of year anyway due to 'normal' flu, pneumonia etc.

Goodnightandgoodluck · 26/02/2020 13:17

I suspect each of these centres will have one machine but I'm trying to see if I can actually validate that

Why do you think that?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 13:18

@wheresmymojo I think from Swine fly days some may have say 3. They didn’t have any where near enough for swine flu days and I recall press indignation as people died due to lack of machines. They are mind blowingly expensive

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:20

More on ECMO if anyone is interested

Another article I read said Leicester is the biggest ECMO centre of the few in the UK and can deal with 150 patients a year.

In Wuhan just one of the hospitals in the city had 5 or 7 ECMO units.

mft.nhs.uk/wythenshawe/services/cardiology-and-cardiothoracic-surgery/ecmo-service/

DigitalGhost · 26/02/2020 13:22

@flissity I'm due at the beginning of May but C section booked end of April. 😭

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 13:23

Why do you think that?

Because:

  • They are insanely expensive
  • Leicester is the biggest unit and can only take 150 patients per year
  • On the WHO conference they mentioned being amazed that there were 5 machines (or maybe 7) in one hospital and that most EU countries would be lucky to have that for the whole country
  • The fact they can't justify even having one machine for the whole of Wales
