Your poor SIL Running I hope she's OK, that sounds really dangerous conditions she's working in.

ChipotleBlessing · 24/02/2020 13:45

The most convincing theory about the lab isn’t that it was a deliberately created virus deliberately or accidentally released, its that they were studying viruses in animals but not being careful enough about contamination and that some of the contaminated animals may have entered the food chain.

Cyberlibre · 24/02/2020 13:49

I'm sure there is a real reason for this (money?!) But why can't they test everyone as they come in to the country from affected countries?
I'm off to Thailand in a few weeks and wondering what will happen on return.
My family member who lives out there went away last week and got tested as soon as arrived back to where he lives.
Why can't we do that? I know I'm probably being stupid and would like to understand more.
Current advice is to only quarantine if symptoms.

Wakemeuuuup · 24/02/2020 13:49

@Brokenbrit You should probaly ring 111 to get DH tested.

This is a text I got from my dr's on Friday.

Public Health England are now recommending that all travellers who develop relevant symptoms, however mild, within 14 days of returning from mainland China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, or Macau should self-isolate at home immedialtely and call NHS111. Public Health England are recommending that travellers from Wuhan and Hubei Province should self-isolate for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, due to the increased risk from that area. Travellers should call NHS111 to inform them of their recent travel to Wuhan or Hubei province. If people are unwell they should contact 111 and tell the operator of their recent travel.

@Wakemeuuuup it’s my DF (Dad), not my husband. I think I just have to trust him, he’s intelligent and aware and is self isolating. If he becomes more unwell he will call 111. He is very concerned about the NHS becoming overwhelmed and feels the likelihood for him is it’s probably seasonal flu or a bad cold.
Personally I probably would call by now but I think it’s a tough one.

RacheyCat · 24/02/2020 13:57

Thoughts for your sil, @RunningAwaywiththeCircus

Twixes · 24/02/2020 14:01

@KoalasandRabbit it's definitely more vague than the sources I linked to. China has also banned trade of wildlife which suggests to me that possibly officials don't know where it came from - the virology lab or the seafood market. It does seem that most think it's from handling and consuming wildlife.

There are interesting photos in this article that provide insight into how cross-contamination between species might happen:

www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-chinese-wet-market-photos-2020-1?r=US&IR=T#the-wuhan-coronavirus-outbreak-isnt-considered-a-pandemic-however-15

Twixes · 24/02/2020 14:04

@ChipotleBlessing I read that theory too. Basically that in order to make extra money some scientists/researchers sell dead wildlife at the market after they've been experimented on and when consumed it's then introduced into the human population. I'm sure whether I believe that one. Seems a bit too unlikely?

Grasspigeons · 24/02/2020 14:05

Does anyone have any experience of what 111 does when someone calls? My sibling has followed the guidance of calling as they have returned from a listed country and developed a bad chest - but they were just told to stay in and they would get a call back. They didnt know what was realistic time frame for a call back.

Twixes · 24/02/2020 14:05

@RacheyCat @RunningAwaywiththeCircus and @brokenbrit

My thoughts are with you all, it's truly frightening.

Wakemeuuuup · 24/02/2020 14:11

@Brokenbrit I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Sorry for saying DH instead of DF.

I hope everyone worried is safe

BREAKING: Oman reports first 2 cases of coronavirus in women returning from Iran t.co/eUoE2b20hL

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/02/2020 14:15

Is it not the case that instances of the incubation have exceeded 14 days though? Those self isolating will be placing a great deal.mlre strain on the NHS if they are a carrier or wait until illness is severe to seek help, when they could and should be tested. Anyone travelling from a place with a known outbreak does surely need to take responsibility and alert health services of their presence and symptoms as it isnt just their own life they risk.

Unfortunately you have to wonder whether people are avoiding it really to avoid the frightening scenario of hospital isolation and instead prefer the idea of waiting it out at home (who wouldn't).

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 14:16

Cases in Oman is scary. They are next door to Yemen who are being battered with war.

DressingGownofDoom · 24/02/2020 14:21

I was a bit frightened and then it all seemed to calm down a bit. Now it's in Iran and Italy, I have to say I am afraid. The sudden deaths in Italy are alarming.

#Hungary citizen aboard #DiamondPrincess tests positive for #COVID19 #coronavirus - foreign ministry in Budapest announces.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 14:32

Philippines to repatriate 400 Filipinos in Diamond Princess tomorrow, 59 of them are positive in coronavirus

Samcarpy92 · 24/02/2020 14:33

If the chinese created this virus then it's a pathetic attempt. The 2% death rate will be a high estimate anyway.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 14:37

Another death in Italy
The death toll rises to seven. The victim was from Castiglione d'Adda.
7 deaths

Meruem · 24/02/2020 14:38

My DS teaches English at a school in Japan. The school was due to hold a big contest today with all the kids & parents. DS got a text message yesterday saying it was cancelled due to risk of the virus. Apparently lots of events are being cancelled over there. Face masks have sold out everywhere! I'm not worried for me, but I am starting to get worried about him. We're discussing him coming home if there start being cases diagnosed near where he is.

Akire · 24/02/2020 14:38

Good to see a thread, although they say it’s mainly killing older and people with serious heath issues many medical younger “fitter” staff seem to have died. It’s the not knowing that’s worse.

Don’t know anyone who thinks the nhs is prepared despite all Gov announcements . They practically fall over every winter with a high flu session. Are they training any extra health staff to skill up in case they need to do more care? Even if every hospital town had 200 sick extra patients at a time they couldn’t cope.

The only good thing is if you get ill now you may have a chance of intensive care bed and care other wise you will have no chance
