What 'adult' thing have you never done?

I have reached the grand old age of 53 and have never booked a holiday abroad. I wouldn't even know where to start! and I fancy a holiday but don't know how to do it Holidays have always been in the UK, camping when the DC were young and caravanning for the last 12 years. My last foreign trip was when I was 19 and DM booked it. I just had to give her the money for it.

I've never used a tumble drier

Vulpine · 26/02/2020 15:18

Im not sure 'meal replacement diets' are a common part if adulthood Hmm

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 26/02/2020 15:36

it's actually depressing that people think it's even a necessary stage, as if getting too fat was just normal.

Lippy1234 · 26/02/2020 17:14

I’ve never seen a dead person.

GregoryGrainog · 26/02/2020 17:23

Lexilooo · 26/02/2020 20:20

I have never:

Had a baby
Taken out a mortgage
Seen star wars
Used a lawn mower
Cooked fish
Owned a house pet
Had a tv in my bedroom
Bought or sold a house
Lived alone
Made a will
Eaten sushi
Used permanent hair dye

I'm in my 40s!

Lexilooo · 26/02/2020 20:20

Been to a football match

couchparsnip · 26/02/2020 20:27

I am amazed at people that can paint amd decorate their own homes. I've never done that.
Never changed a tyre.
Can't use a sewing machine.
Never driven on to a ferry.
Haven't used the water thingie at the petrol station (what is for?).

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 26/02/2020 20:53

it's honestly not hard - it's boring, but it really not hard. You might need to paint 2 or 3 coats to achieve a nice results. No one has to do it, if you can afford it, pay someone! but it's really not difficult.

Wall papering is not hard either, but you do need the proper tools to do it properly.

SisterAgatha · 26/02/2020 20:58

I think painting and decorating is something everyone CAN do, but not everyone SHOULD. I’ve seen some horrific painting attempts and committed some terrible wallpapering crimes of my own!

Bookoffacts · 26/02/2020 21:05

It's very easy to paint a wall or 4. Really anyone can do it and I'm always amazed at people who think you have to get decorators in to do it.
Until recently there were B&Q, Wickes, Doitall places everywhere. Not so much now. What happened?
Above poster with 2 or 3 coats! Really? If there's already paint on the walls then one coat will do. You're mystifying it.
Also no tools needed for wallpapering. Sharp Stanley knife useful but scissors will do. Wallpaper paste sold in poundland at a pound. Washing up sponge. Put paste in washing up bowl or bucket. Can put wallpaper on floor too but later in life I did get one of those fancy folding tables but only as it's useful for car boots too.

Bookoffacts · 26/02/2020 21:14

Water in petrol station is for windscreen washer tank or radiator, both under bonnet.
Windscreen washer tank add with screenwash/ antifreeze.
Radiator add with coolant.

People weren't always so capitalist. They could fix things themselves. Also cars broke more easily. I used to have to top up radiator in my car regularly on long journeys when driving down country from uni to parents. Early 1990s. Woman on own. I just got on with it, often while inappropriately dressed for going under bonnet.

Lexilooo · 26/02/2020 22:02

@couchparsnip I have never engaged the services of a painter and decorator. Painting is so easy it feels wasteful

Mymycherrypie · 26/02/2020 22:35

Everyone saying how easy painting is needs to see my sil’s house where paint is slopped on over holes in the walls, nails and old peeling wallpaper 😂

SisterAgatha · 27/02/2020 07:38

My painting is ok, I spend a long time prepping now. My wallpapering has not always been fantastic, I picked the wrong type of lining paper and it was too thick, I couldn’t get it to stick. You need to make its straight too so you do need a plumb line too, Bookoffacts. Or at least understand the process. And papering a nice square room I’ll agree is easy but not so with a difficult one with lots of corners/windows/doors/edges.

Why are you amazed? Being a painter and decorator is an actual job that people train for. It’s hardly “amazing”‘ that some people choose to pay a skilled tradesman to do it.

We do our own painting and decorating but I fully understand that some people just couldn’t be arsed and have the money to pay for a tradesman so why not?

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 28/02/2020 09:54

but they could be fixed more easily. The more modern cars have a lot of electronic, and you won't be able to fix problems yourself anymore.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 28/02/2020 09:56

Above poster with 2 or 3 coats! Really? If there's already paint on the walls then one coat will do. You're mystifying it.

depends on the base colour.. you might get away with one coat of white paint over older white paint, and it would still look better with 2 coats. If you are painting over dark colour, 1 coat is nowhere near enough.

You DO need tools to wallpaper properly. You can't cut wet wallpaper properly with a pair of scisors.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/02/2020 19:57

"It's very easy to paint a wall or 4. Really anyone can do it "

I made a mess of it when I tried. I also had a friend come to help me and he started doing the ceiling not knowing I didn't want that, so just a small blob of the ceiling was done.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/02/2020 20:00

" You wouldn't feel guilty about them paying your way well into your adult life whilst earning a good wage??"

If they were suffering for it, yes, if they were rich then definitely not.

LifeIsBetterUpsideDown · 04/03/2020 13:51

I've never lived alone, or broken a bone in my body, or cooked prawns. I'm almost 50! Shock

LikeDuhWhatever · 04/03/2020 14:45

grizzlysky · 04/03/2020 14:49
