Re the '3 suspected cases in the Alps' the region where these cases are is Alpes-maritime which includes the Alps but also goes right down to the sea eg Nice and the Côte d'Azur is in Alpes Maritimes

The Alpes Maritime region is similar in size to Kent. Am pointing this out as I know someone here has an ill daughter in an alpine village and does not need to be given further cause to worry by these cases being discussed here as being in the Alps.

RedToothBrush · 24/02/2020 11:30

3 suspected cases at a Paris police station too apparently.

FelicityFebruary · 24/02/2020 11:31

Mittens I was thinking hypothetically that if the virus was causing symptoms it would be in samples in sufficiently numbers to test positively?

I did think for that particular patient with the situation on the Diamond Princess it was only a matter of time til a positive test.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 11:38

The Alps cases have come back negative:

The prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes Bernard Gonzalez announced that 3 suspected cases of coronavirus have been tested in the department. They are negative. He made the announcement during a meeting with local elected officials and representatives of the Regional Health Agency. The department is close to northern Italy where more than 150 cases have been detected.

diddl · 24/02/2020 11:41

Have foolishly looked at Mail online comments & some are saying that it's a lab made virus that has been deliberately leaked??!!

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 11:42

UPDATE: Italy reports 26 new cases of coronavirus, or 64 new cases and 2 new deaths so far today, raising total to 219 cases and 5 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

The UK’s 1st #coronavirus home test kits are now available for pharmacists to order exclusively from @pharmadoctoruk👇

Interesting. I wonder if that's what will happen if/when it becomes too big to manage?

fannyanney · 24/02/2020 11:55

I think home test kits are a brilliant idea.. figures would be more accurate.. but only if they're reliable. It would be a worry that a lot of people would get a false negative

LarkDescending · 24/02/2020 12:06

Home test kits are an interesting development, but will people really self-isolate if they are the only ones who know they are positive? I can imagine there will be some who say - oh well, who will know? I feel OK, it’s only like mild flu, what can be the harm in a trip to the supermarket/a football match/my cousin’s wedding?

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 12:08

Supermarket shelves have been emptied in Milan, as residents stockpile food and supplies ahead of a government-enforced #coronavirus quarantine.

A dozen towns in Italy are in lockdown as authorities race to contain #COVID19 in Europe.

The photos of the empty stores are insane.
Come over to the prepping board and see how we are stocking up before anything like this happens here.

KoalasandRabbit · 24/02/2020 12:16

I think self-test kits would be good and ease pressure on NHS for testing at least. I read someone comment yesterday elsewhere that in Thailand people are avoiding testing as they don't want to be taken into hospital so there maybe people who would self-isolate but not go into hospital unless critical. Though in general not a big fan of self-isolation - know a lot of people who would just do various things. Also it's tricky with kids unless they close schools and nurseries though seem to be doing that in Italy.

diddl · 24/02/2020 12:20

I'm not sure about the home test kits.

Presumably you have to leave the house to get them?

Seems like a way to play on anxieties & make money.

Twixes · 24/02/2020 12:29

@diddl and @FelicityFebruary me too. There's a level 4 lab microbiology lab outside wuhan that some are saying in the source of the virus. But various academics have studied the genome and have dispelled this myth saying the manner in which it is mutating is in line with a zoonotic source, not an artificially engineered one.

But more recently officials in China have released a notice:

'The ministry said in the notice that China should enhance its management of viruses and bioagents at all labs and research institutes, without any explanation as to why this is being proposed right now, leaving some to speculate whether this could be a subtle official acknowledgement of a role played by the lab'.

" There's a level 4 lab microbiology lab outside wuhan that some are saying in the source of the virus. But various academics have studied the genome and have dispelled this myth "

Ah, OK so it could have been a possibility I suppose as opposed to it being said for no reason at all iyswim.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2020 12:41

You'd have though they might have mentioned that in a press conference weeks ago? So, if the who aren't ever going to use the word pandemic, then it's time for someone to call it, if only by the common definition of the term.
