I think though people tend not to take flu seriosuly either if they can see it as just flu. Its never just flu if it is proper flu. There were 3 flu pandemics in the 20th Century the Asian FLu and Hong Kong flus both of which should be looked at in context of the current outbreak. Flu accounts for quite a lot of the pandemics (alongside plague and cholera) and is the one we still havent gotten to grips with.

Thats not to say its the same as flu because it isnt Im simply saying we downplay flu far far too much

GorkyMcPorky · 18/02/2020 11:53

we downplay flu far far too much

Well, so many can't differentiate between a nasty bout of the common cold and flu - until they've had the flu, that is!

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/02/2020 11:56

According to the New York Times, almost ten percent of the world's population of humans is currently affected by this by being restricted, locked down, quarantined or hospitalised. That's circa 760 million people.

In these circumstances we are still seeing circa 2000 new official diagnoses every day...

GorkyMcPorky · 18/02/2020 11:58

Info for teachers. I have been wondering what would happen re pay. I really think that measures should be in place to protect zero hours workers like my DF who will have nothing if having to self-isolate - no SSP unless diagnosed, presumablely.

GorkyMcPorky · 18/02/2020 12:01

It began the question @HasaDigaEebowai, what would the spread be here given that there doesn't seem to be any plan for lockdown?

Mittens030869 · 18/02/2020 12:04

@Quartz2208 Quite. And there was also the Spanish flu outbreak in 1919. Nothing irritates me more than those people who say it's just flu.' Especially since I was really ill with it last year (because it became pneumonia).

Coronavirus sounds very similar to pneumonia, except for the fact that it's a virus and can't be fought with antibiotics. I got better after being given a second course of antibiotics; they had to give me a double dose.

A way to treat a virus has never been found, that's the problem with coronavirus. It will only be defeated once there's a vaccine available. And it can happen, we managed to stamp out smallpox in the late 70s/early 80s.

Thanks for the new thread, I mostly lurk but find this one and the prepping one very useful for keeping up to date with the situation.

Quartz2208 · 18/02/2020 12:16

hasa whilst that is true its important to put in the context of 1/7 of the worlds population lives in China

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/02/2020 12:28

hasa whilst that is true its important to put in the context of 1/7 of the worlds population lives in China

Oh well that's ok then...

Quartz2208 · 18/02/2020 13:17

I didnt say it was ok I said that it makes it sound as if the quarantine element has gone outside of China and it hasnt. The situation hasnt actually changed

Notstrongandstable · 18/02/2020 13:49

I was feeling quite a bit more relaxed about it as I live in Brighton and no more cases yet..then read about the 30 doctors in self isolation in the city..yikes!
One of the latest Dr John Campbell videos said he thought we'd see a lot of cases here in the next 2/3 weeks with it peaking in Europe in 3/4 months . That concerned me slightly..heading off to Asda to stock up this afternoon!

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/02/2020 13:59

I didnt say it was ok I said that it makes it sound as if the quarantine element has gone outside of China and it hasn't.

There is also a whole town of thousands of people in Vietnam locked down and in quarantine.

But no I accept that the ten percent of the world's population affected by this is currently mainly in China. The point was the numbers. They are absolutely enormous and those saying everything is fine are clearly either ignorant of this or in denial about how anything could ever disrupt their shopping, instagraming and Love Island viewing (To be fair I know very little about love island - if its an actual private island it could actually be a good place to be and those contestants have played a blinder!)

Notstrongandstable · 18/02/2020 14:05

Hasa- complete detail, when my DH said CF had killed herself ..my response was..wait, the Labour MP who always votes with the bloody Tories...oh no, that's Caroline Flint, I had never heard of the person he was talking about.

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/02/2020 14:28

Japan is really struggling. 8 new cases today (not including the 88 new diamond princess cases)

ofwarren · 18/02/2020 14:41

That's worrying news in Japan. Seems to be really ramping up. How many cases have they got now?

JustMyName · 18/02/2020 14:46

Thanks for the new thread.

LarkDescending · 18/02/2020 14:47

Japan has 74 confirmed cases of whom 20 have recovered.

Plus the 542 Diamond Princess cases (17 recovered) which I am sure they could do without.

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/02/2020 15:29

Most interesting set of stats on the worldometers website is the figure from yesterday for Hubei

59,989 cumulative total cases for Hubei
7862 discharged to date in Hubei
41,957 currently hospitalised in Hubei - (70% of all their official cases since this began are currently hospitalised!)

Of those hospitalised
30,987 are hospitalised but in a "mild" condition
9117 serious (21.7%)
1853 critical (4.4%)

So serious and critical cases for Hubei have gone up.

Quartz2208 · 18/02/2020 16:17

It is absolutely horrible what is going on in China but until it properly hits here life has to go on as normal

And really there is no guarantee it will - look at the Asian Flu outbreak in 1958 or the Hong Kong outbreak in 1968.

And the worldometers stats if you look at the logarthmic graphs the number of cases is levelling of on the curve

Ontopofthesunset · 18/02/2020 16:17

That would probably make sense though as it mostly seems to take a couple of weeks for people to become seriously ill if they are going to, so we would see an increase now reflecting the numbers diagnosed or admitted a week or two ago.

Ontopofthesunset · 18/02/2020 16:18

Sorry, that was referring to the increase in serious and critical cases.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 18/02/2020 16:30

This explains the Diamond Princess infections - basically no infection control

LarkDescending · 18/02/2020 17:17

That’s a fascinating video re conditions on the Diamond Princess. I was Shock at the onboard medical officer apparently having abandoned PPE because “I’m infected anyway”. One possibility which occurred to me is that false positive diagnoses may have been generated due to cross-contamination (by the allegedly sloppy medical officer or otherwise). A significant proportion (I forget what %) of those on the ship identified as infected are said to be asymptomatic.

Banana0pancakes · 18/02/2020 17:17

To play devils advocate though I'm not surprised Japan are having more cases when they let things like hadaka matsuri go ahead. A virus' dream come true!
