That video was debunked, apparently it was a family that died from CO poisoning. Still heartbreaking nonetheless

NaturalBornWoman · 18/02/2020 20:05

This is also my concern. I understand it's a new virus, but I don't think they have a clue about how long the incubation period is.

PHE are monitoring all pneumonia cases and will be in a position to spot any cluster or pattern really quickly. I think we are beyond the point where people who came here before it all kicked off are wandering round spreading it.

HairyFloppins · 18/02/2020 20:06

Yep they died of something else, awful awful video.

There are a lot of fake things on Twitter and misinformation.

The truth will never out I don't think.

GorkyMcPorky · 18/02/2020 20:06

@adayatthebeach I saw that one too. Also footage of an apartment building on fire that turned out to be a year old. I follow Harry Chen @Ischinar and while most of his clips turn out to be genuine he acknowledges that a small number are not always what they seem.

adayatthebeach · 18/02/2020 20:15

Oh ok. That was on newsmonger F2 on Facebook it has all sorts of videos. Can't always believe even what you see.

FecktheBoss · 18/02/2020 20:36

Here you all are. I hope they get the ones home from the ship soon

Jenasaurus · 18/02/2020 20:59

thanks for the new thread

LarkDescending · 18/02/2020 21:03

Not sure if we’ve had this yet - a Japanese cluster being linked to a Tokyo riverboat party for taxi drivers and their families on 18 January:

a case in Scotland

Jenasaurus · 18/02/2020 21:41

sorry I misread that, I am sorry if I have caused alarm.

floatygoat · 18/02/2020 21:52

Guys, you do realise that seasonal influenza is a far greater threat to thousands of people don't you? Do you worry about that? Hmm?

Only joking!

Can I join? I partake in the prepping thread but noticed this one is pretty active too.

I've made myself switch off a bit from constantly following the latest updates via epidemiologists on Twitter the last couple of days.

Seems a bit quiet on the news front though , I wonder if this is the calm before the storm?

runninguphills · 19/02/2020 00:55

Has anyone got a link to the prepping thread? I'm following the whole spread very closely.

I came here to look for facts, but theres some very unscientific incorrect stuff posted like this:

GorkyMcPorky

Obviously it isn't as there's a wide range of viruses. But it's a stupid comment anyway; too many people think the flu is only a very bad cold. Which it isn't, thousands die of flu every year.

I agree. I suppose it's people who call a cold the flu, never having actually had the flu

What is the point of having a thread like this when nonsense like this is posted on it.

For the record, according to NHS news, who posted research evidence, as much as 77% (from memory of reading the research -with flu) of the population 'get flu' and report either zero, or negligibly minor symptoms. Also, colds can kill.

You cannot know whether you have a cold or flu, categorically, unless you are tested.

I would like to try to follow this thread but won't be if this kind of unscientific conjecture abounds, as it makes the thread futile.

AvocadoOwl · 19/02/2020 09:25

If I was looking for consistently accurate scientific discussion about the virus @usernameishistory I'm not sure a thread on Mumsnet would be my first point of call.

ofwarren · 19/02/2020 09:29

@usernameishistory why would you come to a Mumsnet post get find "scientific facts" when the majority of people here will not be scientists? Best following the department of health and the world health organisation and leaving us to discuss the virus in layman's terms.

usernameishistory · 19/02/2020 09:41

A bit defensive, much.

However, you seem to be saying that you come here purposely to read stufd thats unproven, and speculative, about something you're very worried about.

Oh well you do you.

Its possible in my current ill state that I've got this thread confused with another that is posting all the current links to accurate (as we can judge it to be) data on covid19, and hence my comment on speaking nonsense on such a serious matter.

But you enjoy your reading and posting nonsense if thats what you feel is worthy.

You don't have to be 'scientists' at all to be able to speak based on reality and actual evidence rather than speculative nonsense.

FourTeaFallOut · 19/02/2020 09:41

Well, I've heard that the Lancet doesn't actually publish any new work, all the researchers really do is mill around on Mumsnet and wait to be spoon fed.

usernameishistory · 19/02/2020 09:44

ofwarren I don't know what you read of MN, but there are very intelligent, thoughtful, scientific, highly qualified posters on here. I guess it depends what you're reading, and where you go to read it.

There's a lot of education available through MN reading, and also there mindless nastiness and trolling also. Its not only one thing.

ofwarren · 19/02/2020 09:46

I guess it depends on what you are reading and where you go to read it and you chose AIBU?

peridito · 19/02/2020 09:47

user sorry you're not well .I've found a number of posters on this thread offering very insightful ,helpful posts with links to support stuff they mention .

It's inevitable that not every post is worth reading ,I wouldn't waste your energy worrying about them .

This site has masses of figures and info

South Korea seems to have an active cluster (possible superspreader) situation going on in Daegu. They have had 20 new cases overall in 24 hours for a total of 51.

usernameishistory · 19/02/2020 10:01

Thanks OP.

Please don't think that by pointing out some nonsense, I'm saying it all is. I'm not, just that many are very worried about cv, and words posted about medical conditions that are myth can cast doubt over the validity and merit of a whole thread.

I can see there are some useful links, and measured comments also.

I've also, I think, mixed yours with another, but anyway, I can find info, and do check onto these type threads to glean further info.

Its a very risky business claiming knowledge that you don't have (not you) in the midst of a pandemic scare.

GorkyMcPorky · 19/02/2020 10:07

@usernameishistory

In my (badly C&Pd by you) post, I was agreeing with another poster that 'it's just the flu' is a nonsensical response to the risk of COVID-19; and also that if someone thinks of flu as 'just' another virus they probably haven't experienced (symptomatic) flu - clarification for your fastidious benefit. Essentially what most people who say 'it's just the flu' actually mean is 'it's just a common cold'. I don't pretend to be a scientist.

Try quoting me in context next time, eh?
