...but I didn’t watch the whole video, which may have covered that point off.

AvocadoOwl · 18/02/2020 17:36

Really interesting Diamond Princess video. Can't say I'm surprised- quite obviously something went wrong with injection control there. Awful situation for everyone involved.

Worriedmum97 · 18/02/2020 17:41

Not sure if posted before, but found this super reassuring
COVID-19 Fatality Rate by AGE:

AGE
DEATH RATE
80+ years old
14.8%
70-79 years old
8.0%
60-69 years old
3.6%
50-59 years old
1.3%
40-49 years old
0.4%
30-39 years old
0.2%
20-29 years old
0.2%
10-19 years old
0.2%
0-9 years old
no fatalities
In general, relatively few cases are seen among children.

Worriedmum97 · 18/02/2020 17:42

From here www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/

Based on all 72,314 cases of COVID-19 confirmed, suspected, and asymptomatic cases in China as of February 11, a paper by the Chinese CCDC released on February 17 and published in the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology

FourTeaFallOut · 18/02/2020 17:46

I'm going to assume that you're not 80 if you found that reassuring?

ifonly4 · 18/02/2020 17:53

Even if I personally was ok, on those calculations I'm going to loose a family member, good friend, neighbour of work colleague and I wouldn't wish it on any of them.

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/02/2020 17:55

And of course we'd better hope that no children (if that's the only group we now care about Hmm), need hospital treatment for anything else since the NHS would be completely overwhelmed if this hits us.

Worriedmum97 · 18/02/2020 18:07

Apologies if my message sounded offensive. Yes the whole situation and statistics is awful, but it would be much worse if as in for example with flu the youngest and eldest were the most vulnerable. My kids have preexisting conditions and I was mostly worried about them.

AvocadoOwl · 18/02/2020 18:33

The figures are reassuring re children but decidedly dicey other than that.

Based on the 50+ figure we will all lose people close to us if full scale local epidemics become a reality. Doesn't bear thinking about yet at the same time that's exactly what the population of Hubei are going through right now 😓

NemophilistRebel · 18/02/2020 18:38

Still so confused with how this seems to be playing out

Such huge numbers affected in Wuhan, but even with pockets of known infectious elope in America and Europe it doesn’t seem to be spreading at all

Also confused at how some people are getting all clear results after recovering and others can be recovered and still showing up positive for Coronavirus weeks after last of the symptoms have gone.

NemophilistRebel · 18/02/2020 18:39

Elope = people

BambooBoobam · 18/02/2020 18:54

Nemophilist I’m confused about the numbers too. I’ve just seen this posted on Twitter and it shows that 60k people have been infected with the virus in Hubei (includes Wuhan) but the province with the next highest amount of cases only has 1,300 people infected.

to be worried about coronavirus part 3
asahdiseh · 18/02/2020 19:00

The coronavirus hasn't spread in China; it's been well contained

Doesn't sound well contained:
1,328confirmed GuangdongMainland China
1,257confirmed HenanMainland China
1,172confirmed ZhejiangMainland China
1,007confirmed HunanMainland China

These are "official" CCP figures

@Mittens030869

NemophilistRebel · 18/02/2020 19:00

It’s the strangest thing. And doesn’t match any patterns of previous epidemics like SARS MERS or bird flu which seemed far more balanced.

If I wanted to it would be quite easy to get taken in by some of the out there crazy conspiracies doing the round at the moment

asahdiseh · 18/02/2020 19:02

it doesn’t seem to be spreading at all
My concern is that this is because it's got a long incubation period where people are spreading it for weeks without realising. Some research suggested up to 21 days. Hope I'm wrong.

Quartz2208 · 18/02/2020 19:04

www.britannica.com/event/Hong-Kong-flu-of-1968

www.britannica.com/event/Asian-flu-of-1957

are quite interesting (I know its flu and not coronavirus) but it does highlight how this could go

Spanish flu (www.history.com/topics/world-war-i/1918-flu-pandemic) also had the second wave although much later

First off these shows we should never say its just flu but also how it can vary. Best case I think would be the top two, worst case very much the Spanish flu

BambooBoobam · 18/02/2020 19:13

There’s a man in Wuhan called Tang Hai and he’s been documenting his wife’s Coronavirus infection.

I’ve just seen a video that he posted a few days ago and his wife has been told by a dr in the hospital that she’s now got issues with her heart. Very worrying if this was caused by the virus and is a widespread complication.

GorkyMcPorky · 18/02/2020 19:51

Presumably it's not spreading to the same extent elsewhere because of the extent of lockdown in Hubei. Had they not taken that a room my guess is that it'd be rampant worldwide by now.

GorkyMcPorky · 18/02/2020 19:51

action not a room!

Notsureabouthis · 18/02/2020 19:56

What are people supposed to do if they’ve just come back from China to the UK (I’m talking last week)- self isolate for 2 weeks?

NemophilistRebel · 18/02/2020 19:56

I may be mistaken but flu if serious can cause heart issues or even heart failure at its worse so if Covid19 is severe in some patients then heart problems might not be unusual unfortunately.

WaterSheep · 18/02/2020 19:58

My concern is that this is because it's got a long incubation period where people are spreading it for weeks without realising.

This is also my concern. I understand it's a new virus, but I don't think they have a clue about how long the incubation period is.

adayatthebeach · 18/02/2020 19:58

If there are no cases of children how come I saw a video taken at a china hospital showing them putting three children in a body bag because there’s a shortage of body bags?

NemophilistRebel · 18/02/2020 20:01

There was a child tested positive in France or Germany I thought?

NemophilistRebel · 18/02/2020 20:01

Oh I see the stats were deaths. Ignore me
