I think DP cases remain under their own DP category regardless of their current location. I suppose adding them to their own country's figures doesn't make sense if those figures are being relied on to measure geographical spread in said country.

MrsBethel · 19/02/2020 12:23

We'll find out in due course, but those cruise ships are packed with old people - so if none of the old Europeans/Americans on the cruise ships experience anything more than mild symptoms then I think you've got your answer.

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/02/2020 12:30

Think we might be clutching at straws a little. Press says there has been a "non-chinese" American death (albeit the death occurred in China)

FourTeaFallOut · 19/02/2020 12:35

Non-Chinese is not Non-Asian though. I'm not saying that you are wrong, just that it doesn't disprove the point.

I think it's unlikely that there will be a difference between ethnicities but I do think the Diamond Princess might offer some answers to these questions.

MrsBethel · 19/02/2020 12:42

Yes, possibly.

The media state this is an American citizen, but I believe they haven't released any details of the person's ethnicity. Understandably so.

I'd bet that is considered to be vital information to be shared amongst the experts, though.

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/02/2020 12:58

Another of the evacuated americans just tested positive for coronavirus. 15 of them now.

Banana0pancakes · 19/02/2020 13:59

@FourTeaFallOut the cynic in me thinks that's exactly why Mr Johnson hasn't been to see the victims of flooding. Cant be mingling with us virus carrying commoners!

FourTeaFallOut · 19/02/2020 14:08

Yes, and on another totally unrelated note, he's just assembled the youngest post-war cabinet.

Two Iranians have died from Coronavirus

www.jpost.comBreaking-News/Two-Iranians-die-of-coronavirus-in-Qom-Iran-618113

I think they are Caucasian there. Also one of the Germans infected in Bavaria has pneumonia now and is treated with anti Aids medication (but in stable condition).

IvyBush123 · 19/02/2020 16:25

The US warns against releasing DiamondPrincess passengers without Quadranten yet they are doing it nevertheless www.ft.com/content/91446bd6-52b8-11ea-8841-482eed0038b1

ofwarren · 19/02/2020 16:27

Yes they are Caucasians. You learn something new every day.
I wonder how many cases Iran actually have? I bet there aren't just them two.

IvyBush123 · 19/02/2020 16:30

Great question. It is not mentioned that one of the Iranians traveled to China. Did they pick it up in Iran? Is there much travel between China and Iran?

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/02/2020 16:32

Iran also had a death last week which was initially said to be due to coronavirus and then it was hushed up and they said they didn't have any cases. I suspect it might have been a case too.

IvyBush123 · 19/02/2020 16:37

Can anybody read Farsi? On twitter they say this is an Iranian news station and they report five are dead from Coronavirus in Iran: twitter.com/IranIntlbrk/status/1230149304045711362

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/02/2020 16:42

Iran did also have a Chinese national and a German national in quarantine at the end of January. With the sketchy detail, its possible its them and not Iranians.

IvyBush123 · 19/02/2020 16:45

No, my Jerusalem post link says they were Iranian. www.jpost.comBreaking-News/Two-Iranians-die-of-coronavirus-in-Qom-Iran-618113

Of course it is possible that they are Iranian of Chinese/East Asian ancestry... but are there many Iranians of Chinese/East Asian ancestry? Not sure, have to look it up.

LarkDescending · 19/02/2020 17:15

“Two elderly Iranian citizens” from Qom. In my experience of Iran they are highly unlikely to have had Chinese/East Asian ancestry.

LarkDescending · 19/02/2020 17:16

The “elderly” bit is from IRNA news agency quoted in the Guardian.

LarkDescending · 19/02/2020 17:19

The number cited in the Farsi tweet is 2 - not sure why Google translate makes it 5.

LarkDescending · 19/02/2020 17:26

Just had a quick google, and a Chinese consortium is currently building a high speed rail link between Tehran, Qom and Isfahan. This project may have provided a vector for the virus to arrive in Qom, perhaps, if people are flying in from China to do the construction?

peridito · 19/02/2020 17:27

Good research Lark .That does sound possible .

OP posts:
LarkDescending · 19/02/2020 17:29

Disclaimer: for all I know there may be a zillion other Chinese interests in Qom these days!

minniethemooch · 19/02/2020 18:03

The media are saying the two Iranian citizens are elderly - I wonder how they were infected , unlikely to have been travel ?

PoisoningPigeons · 19/02/2020 18:05

Wondering about travel to SE Asia this summer - the context is that we've been promising relatives for ages that this year we'll come and see them (haven't been for 4 years). And then coronavirus happened. I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons.

For now I'm on the side of saying we will go ahead with our intended trip... hoping that like many other seasonal infections, there will be a summer lull... also that if COVID does reappear with a vengeance next winter and thus becomes more widespread, then the following year we would definitely not want to be travelling... so this summer could be our "last chance"...

But am I just making reasons to justify myself?

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/02/2020 18:37

I think it’s too early to say. If things go badly I suspect travel to that area could become very difficult
