How many long term (6 months or more) romantic relationships have you had in your life?

I am 45. I have had 5 long term (6 months or longer) romantic relationships in my life (including my husband who I have been with for 15 years). I don't think that is a lot but my best friend does. Is this about normal (also had many years being single, so it all evens out).

I've had four

  • 2 as a teen
  • 1 mid 20s
  • my husband, we've been together 6 years

Most of my 20s was a dry spell 😂

Deckthehallswithlotsofcake · 17/02/2020 18:54

Your best friend was very rude to claim that.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/02/2020 18:55

29 years old and I've had 2 long term relationships. One was my first boyfriend when I was 15 and one was my ex husband. Had a couple of short term relationships in between, and a FWB after divorcing but I haven't had another proper relationship since my divorce (through choice).

noideaatallreally · 17/02/2020 18:55

1 - been together over 30 years :)

Graphista · 17/02/2020 18:56

I’m 47 and I’ve only had 4 long term relationships.

None very long term, marriage only lasted 10 years.

Don’t think I’m designed for long term to be honest.

I like my independence and getting my own way too much!

4, I’m 30

  1. First was my uni boyfriend which lasted 2.5 years. I got together with my now DH a month afterwards and we have now been together almost 9 years. Have had no other relationships of any length.
Movinghouseatlast · 17/02/2020 19:04

3 actual boyfriends, two who it was just (for him- both times!) sexual.

First boyfriend was from age 16 to 20.

Second boyfriend was age 25 to 28.

I met my long term partner at age 30 and we are still together and will always be I hope.

MulticolourMophead · 17/02/2020 19:08

I have had one relationship. I was with him for 30 years until I left because of abusive behaviour. I have never had any other relationship, not even a one night stand, simply because I met ex too young.

DC are egging me on to date. I might do soon.

scarlettio · 17/02/2020 19:16

7 . I'm 50 .

Shinygreenelephant · 17/02/2020 19:20

I wouldn't call 6 months long term. I've had 3 - 8 years, 9 months and 5 years (and counting)

Carouselfish · 17/02/2020 19:22

I'm 39, I've had five.

2020runner · 17/02/2020 19:22

2, first aged 16-18, second aged 19 to 30 (now)

NSFW · 17/02/2020 19:23

3 that felt like proper relationships.

15-23 years old
29-41 years old
46 year old and currently still going.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 17/02/2020 19:24

Five. I'm over 55.

Thebishopofbanterbury · 17/02/2020 19:25

Only two, one relationship for 10 years and one of them for 16 years, now my dh. I'm early 40s

MrHodgeymaheg · 17/02/2020 19:26

About 4 and I'm 37.

First 3years
One about 10 months
One about 7 years
This one nearly 10 years

I think I have only been single about 6 months of my life though! Wish I had a bit more time on my own looking back.

chipsandgin · 17/02/2020 19:26

7 including one of 8 years in my twenties & nearly 20 years with DH & I’m 50. All of the others were almost exactly six months - seemed to be my boredom threshold (or when the honeymoon period wore off!).

Pretty standard IMO, the only way to know what you want, what you are willing to compromise on and what makes you happy is to try a few out until you find one that ticks enough boxes for you to stick around! Not many of the couples I know who met early or didn’t have much of a past have lasted - just a few who were lucky enough to meet their perfect partner and strong enough to weather the storms, I’d rather have all the (mostly) lovely memories of the ones along the way personally ;)
