Gas or electric hob? And why?

icecreamsundae32 · 17/02/2020 10:00

Which do you prefer? Which is better? For cooking, cost, environment?
Previously I've always had electric, DH gas. When we moved our house came with a rangemaster which had electric oven but gas hob.... it's about to give up so looking at new ones. I'd like to go all electric but DH isn't sure!
Thanks

Induction. Better than either.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 17/02/2020 10:02

Not gas - I have a gas hob for the first time ever and even 15 years later I still hate it.

Miss my electric induction

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 17/02/2020 10:02

Gas. Everything else is electric but cant stand electric hobs. They take too long. Gas is immediate. If something is about to boil over with gas you just turn it down but with electric it takes a good 60 seconds to cool so the pan boils over anyway unless you are able to pick it up off the heat.

TattiePants · 17/02/2020 10:03

Definitely induction

icecreamsundae32 · 17/02/2020 10:03

What's the difference with induction? Now you are confusing me lol!

Always preferred a gas hob, much more control. Downside of course is the cleaning. I also like the gas/electric split so you are never caught out in a fuel cut off, rare but it does happen.

But induction is very tempting. All the control, without the cleaning. Currently using a rangemaster, love it to bits, gas hob, ovens are fan assisted electric.

spanieleyes · 17/02/2020 10:05

It wipes clean!

finnmcool · 17/02/2020 10:05

Gas hob, electric oven. We have powercuts about 5 times a year, so I can at least cook! Grin

GooodMythicalMorning · 17/02/2020 10:07

Gas, Induction for me is awful. It takes ages to heat and doesnt cook as well.

Getitwright · 17/02/2020 10:07

If you do get induction, you will need the correct pans.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/02/2020 10:07

always gas, it's much more responsive, actually gets pans HOT, I cannot be doing with electric feebly warming up pans! ...I don't have any induction hob experience though so maybe they are not pathetic!

Plus no matter what the electricity does you can boil the kettle!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/02/2020 10:07

LOVE Gas. It's on and off and takes seconds to adjust. Both electric and induction take ages. You can leave pans on a gas stove after you have turned the gas off. No need to move them.

Induction scratches too, especially if you use cast iron and not all pans work with induction.

Comefromaway · 17/02/2020 10:07

Gas hob every time.

Landlubber2019 · 17/02/2020 10:09

Had both and will have an induction next. I currently have a gas and that's my least favourite.

Induction is like electric but doesn't get hot to the touch, you need special pans though x

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2020 10:09

If something is about to boil over with gas you just turn it down but with electric it takes a good 60 seconds to cool so the pan boils over anyway unless you are able to pick it up off the heat

Not true for induction, much more immediate.

Another vote for induction OP. Heat up and down quickly, easier to clean, don't need to get gas piped in, did I say easier to clean?

If your DH wants gas, I hope he's going to be the one fiddling about taking all the bits on and off to clean it.

NannyR · 17/02/2020 10:12

Induction definitely, it's as quick and responsive as gas and much better than a standard electric/ceramic hob. Very easy to clean, it's just a sheet of glass to wipe down rather than all the pan supports and burners in a gas hob. They are more energy efficient too as all the energy goes straight to the pan and doesn't heat the surrounding air like gas.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2020 10:13

You don't need 'special pans' for induction hobs, you just need steel ones.

When we got an induction hob, our existing saucepan set was suitable. We did need new frying pans, but I just got some fairly cheap ones from Ikea:

£22 for a wok, and £10-£19 for frying pans in a range of sizes, all really good quality.

LaurieMarlow · 17/02/2020 10:15

Induction is amazing

I resisted initially on account of the pans, but they’re not that niche.

icecreamsundae32 · 17/02/2020 10:16

Ooohhh think I'm liking the sound of induction. I actually have the wok posted @BarbaraofSeville!

I suppose one benefit of gas is the power cut issue but we've lived here nearly 2 years and had only one short power cut...

I have had electric, gas and induction hobs. Gas is my favourite. I like an electric oven though.

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 17/02/2020 10:16

I’ve had all 3. Induction every time. We moved a couple of years ago. It was gas. I could wait to redo the kitchen & get another induction job. Best thing ever.

NannyR · 17/02/2020 10:18

The pans thing is always given as a negative for buying an induction hob - I've never had a problem finding pans that work, my basic Ikea 365 stainless steel pans that I've had for years work fine. You don't have to buy "special induction" pans, anything that's magnetic will be fine.

Innertwist · 17/02/2020 10:19

Some induction are better than others.

LaurieMarlow · 17/02/2020 10:19

They often throw in some pans with the purchase anyway.
