Gas or electric hob? And why?

Which do you prefer? Which is better? For cooking, cost, environment?
Previously I've always had electric, DH gas. When we moved our house came with a rangemaster which had electric oven but gas hob.... it's about to give up so looking at new ones. I'd like to go all electric but DH isn't sure!
Thanks

Induction.

Gas hobs are a pita to clean. Our house has a large, new gas hob the previous owners installed and I feel duty bound to keep it for a few years as it's so new. I hate it and will celebrate the day it's ripped out. It always looks dirty, always needs wiping and is so fiddly to wipe properly.

I’ve now got an induction hob and would never go back! Heats up/cools down super quickly, very responsive and not dangerously hot to the touch. I did go and get some nice pans that work with induction hobs though.

Lipperfromchipper · 17/02/2020 11:20

Definitely Induction!! I wouldn’t go back to gas at all now!!

minniemoll · 17/02/2020 11:21

I love my induction job, I'd never go back to gas - all those bits to clean! Induction is so fast to heat up, a pan of water boils about twice as fast as it did on gas, and you don't waste any power as it only heats the parts the pan touches. You can literally put your finger on the hob next to a boiling pan and it'll be just vaguely warm.

Beseen19 · 17/02/2020 11:27

Induction. It takes a bit of time to get used to but is absolutely the quickest method. It would have a large pot ready for pasta boiling in about a minute.
I also found it a lot safer if you have kids around, it's only hot when the pans are touching it. Theres no open flames to potentially catch. Most pans are induction friendly now, IKEA 365 range definitely is.

Spanglybangles · 17/02/2020 11:30

I had gas in last house...hated it. Have ceramic job now and love how easy it is to clean. Will have induction when we do up the kitchen for the control. However I am a little interested in a dual fuel hob that has a gas wok burner as well as induction. There are a few out there now. One example below

Spanglybangles · 17/02/2020 11:30

*Hob, not job Hmm

mencken · 17/02/2020 11:30

gas - so much easier and more responsive. Normal electric obviously useless and wouldn't like to chance induction in case that wasn't all it was set up to be. BTW remember induction and pacemakers are a no-no if you have any senior relatives.

cheaper; on LPG (no mains gas) and a £35 bottle lasts best part of a year with twice daily cooking. And power cut proof because they will get more frequent as our grid gets more overloaded.

cleaning not a problem because it is so responsive, I always make a hell of a mess on electric hobs because they are so pig-slow. When it does need cleaning it is a five minute job, not the major mission some on here seem to make it.

I do boil water in the kettle but I'd do that with an electric hob as it is more efficient.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/02/2020 11:32

My vintage Atomic coffee maker (and my other coffee pots) won't work with induction, so it's a 'no' for me.

bathorshower · 17/02/2020 11:35

I used induction for a couple of weeks between gas cookers. While it had plenty of power, I found I couldn't turn it down low enough - I'm often cooking pasta for one, and it would boil over, even at the lowest setting, so I had to stand there, taking it on and off the hob. Which was tedious. I wasn't using the newest of hobs - do current ones have low simmer settings?

MangoFeverDream · 17/02/2020 11:38

Well seeing as most of the reasons they give don't actually apply to induction, apart from use in power cuts, I think they must be getting confused with ceramic hobs, which look like induction, but behave like electric

As you have to use flat-bottom woks, just no, induction is still not preferable. That’s just for Chinese-style stir fries, I also prefer open flame for grilling and searing food directly.

Comefromaway · 17/02/2020 11:43

Gas is cheaper to run.

happymummy12345 · 17/02/2020 11:43

Gas 100%
We have a free standing gas cooker with glass lid. I love it

WitsEnding · 17/02/2020 11:44

Prefer gas to ceramic hob, haven't tried induction. However, my kitchen opens onto the utility/conservatory rather than the exterior so I can't have gas ... hated the elsectric oven and hob for a couple of years but have got used to it now.

justmyview · 17/02/2020 11:45

Induction

I've got a single ring gas camping stove so I guess I'd take that out in case of a powercut. (Bought for camping, not specifically for powercuts!)

@sleepyhead Is it safe to use a gas camping stove indoors?

IamHyouweegobshite · 17/02/2020 11:45

We have a gas hob, electric oven. I have had electric hobs before and hated them, love the way gas cooks, plus any power cuts you can still cook.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 17/02/2020 11:49

I have had electric and gas. I am now lusting after an induction after using my daughters one. It heats up quickly. It is a breeze to clean. I hate cleaning my current gas hob. I prefer a gas oven though.

ringletsandtwiglets · 17/02/2020 11:51

I've had gas and electric. Currently use a very old electric all in one oven/hob. I don't like it! Takes ages to heat up a pan, always seemed to boil liquids over because it's not very responsive. I suppose I've got used to it now.

In October, I stayed in a holiday cottage which had a gas hob and cooking on it was an absolute dream. I've had a gas pipeline put into the kitchen, but will need to gut the existing kitchen and move the oven to the opposite side of the room to make it work. More money needed!

ScreamingLadySutch · 17/02/2020 11:57

Gas.
Instant control.
1,000s of restaurants can't be wrong.

Beau20 · 17/02/2020 12:02

Gas any day. You have zero control over electric, takes 5 years to heat up and cool down. Apparently more expensive than gas (I've had both and can't tell).

Now if you throw induction in the mix, that over gas and electric. We are going to swap our electric one for induction.

hotchocdrinker · 17/02/2020 12:06

Induction, definitely. I used to love gas, then moved to a village without gas and inherited a solid plate electric hob. Hated it. Got an induction hob when we changed the kitchen. Loved it. Just as responsive as gas, but so much easier to clean and you don't get so hot when cooking! Then moved again to a place with mains gas and a gas hob. I was ready to love it but lasted about 4 weeks before replacing with with another induction hob. The gas hob was honestly making me not want to cook, and I like cooking. Best investment I ever made, and 5 years on it still looks great.

Cinderemma · 17/02/2020 12:08

Has. I've got electric and I hate it.

sleepyhead · 17/02/2020 12:18

@justmyview it's not ideal and obviously you should never use one as a permanent substitute for a stove, but in a well ventilated room, supervised for a short time to boil a kettle or heat up soup in a power cut? Yes, I would.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 17/02/2020 12:24

Gas here for hob (love it) and oven (preferred electric in our old place) be aware if you’re kitchen is wired up for gas and just has the fuse to give electric for the ignition that you’d potentially need to change your electrics to go ‘all electric’.

Luckily we were told this at curry’s before ordering anything as we were so close to swapping from all gas to all electric and we didn’t realise the fuse/output difference Blush

ListeningQuietly · 17/02/2020 12:25

Induction

quicker to heat up and cool down than any other type (as the bars on a gas hob stay hot)

the hob itself is a sheet of glass - so is worktop when not in use

only induction lets you pick up a boiled over pan, wipe the hob dry and put it back down again

mine is a 10 year old Neff and it can still boil a pan of water quicker than the kettle

would never ever go back to gas
