Gas or electric hob? And why?

icecreamsundae32 · 17/02/2020 10:00

Which do you prefer? Which is better? For cooking, cost, environment?
Previously I've always had electric, DH gas. When we moved our house came with a rangemaster which had electric oven but gas hob.... it's about to give up so looking at new ones. I'd like to go all electric but DH isn't sure!
Thanks

Gas is harder to clean so I choose electric for that reason alone.

MumW · 17/02/2020 13:39

Gas hob, everytime, unless it's induction because gas is instantly controlled.
I'm toying with an induction as I've been told it is instantly controllable and is easier to clean. I'm deliberating as I use a wok very frequently and I you don't get the heat around the pan as you do with gas.

anotherlittlechicken · 17/02/2020 13:41

Gas hob every time. Electric hob is shit.

MumW · 17/02/2020 13:43

Induction for me would mean not being able to use the hob if we had a power cut
This, too, although we do have a camping stove if things go too bad.

Not worried about new pans as I've had these for 25 years, and they are induction friendly, but it's an excuse to 'treat' myself to new ones.

Remmy123 · 17/02/2020 13:44

I've just gone from gas to induction hob

I love it

Easy to clean too

ListeningQuietly · 17/02/2020 13:44

Electric hob is shit.
Have you ever used an induction hob ?

weegiemum · 17/02/2020 13:58

Has job, electric fan oven.

Apolloanddaphne · 17/02/2020 14:01

Gas hob and electric oven. I cannot get on with electric hobs of any sort.

icecreamsundae32 · 17/02/2020 14:03

So many replies! Going to research induction more and see if I can find a range type induction that doesn't cost too much...

I've had gas, ceramic and induction - definitely induction is the best! As responsive as gas and as long as a magnet sticks to the bottom of your pans they will be compatible with an induction hob. They are so easy to clean as well - hated trying to clean my old gas hob!

Backtoreality1 · 17/02/2020 14:15

Lived with electric for the last 15 years and SOOOOOO happy to have moved into a house with a gas hob. So much better if you like to do Chinese cookery as the pans heat up much faster and to a higher termperature.....never could get used to stirfrying on electric, everything ended up poached.
Electric oven is fine, but for hob cooking I will never give up my gas again!!

Abraid2 · 17/02/2020 14:19

Induction is great. We have stopped needing a separate kettle because it heats up water so quickly.

Geoffreythecat · 17/02/2020 14:32

Gas always. If you use a wok regularly, it's the one to buy. It's not possible to replicate a gas wok ring using induction.

Northernlass99 · 17/02/2020 16:38

Induction every time. Completely different to an 'electric' hob. My mum has a ceramic hob and it is dreadful, but induction is fantastic and just as quick as gas but with no gunk collecting around the burners.

Heats up super quick, just as responsive as gas, no need for 'special' pans just steel ones (all my pans I already had were suitable), doesn't scratch (had mine for 7 years looks brand new), can use any old wok and do stir fry no problem.

QuestionableMouse · 17/02/2020 16:42

100% gas imo. Electric can be feeble and induction isn't that affordable for many people.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2020 17:17

Another vote for induction. Fast, easy to clean, safer. What's not to like?

ListeningQuietly · 17/02/2020 17:19

Induction hobs are no dearer than other types
They are MUCH safer
And they are not feeble

Excited101 · 17/02/2020 17:26

Induction, 100%

pigsDOfly · 17/02/2020 17:29

Never used an induction hob so can''t comment on that, but between gas and electricity, I'd take gas hob and electric oven every time.

My DD has an electric hob. I've used it a few times and find it slow to heat up and difficult to control because of how long it takes to cool down. However, my DD can't stand my gas hob.

I do, however, think preference is quite often governed by whatever you've got used to.

Stickybeaksid · 17/02/2020 17:40

Induction all the way. I have a lot of chef friends and they also all have induction at home. Super fast, really easy to clean and really responsive. Best part is having a totally flat surface when the cooker is not in use. I also like the safety aspect of it. If there is no pan on the hob there is no heat and our one is cool to the touch pretty much straight after turning it off.

Bonkersblond · 17/02/2020 17:42

Just gone from gas to induction, love it, will never go back, quality of magnetic pans is key, the pans which came with the hob will boil instantly, the cheapie supermarket pans do take a bit longer.

ineedaholidaynow · 17/02/2020 17:49

Which induction hobs are people getting and do you have to have a special electrical supply/cable like you do for an oven, as I know some are higher power than others?

mencken · 17/02/2020 17:53

it is quite a marmite question, OP - no-one is wrong in their answers.

perhaps gas is for the less houseproud among us, although mine takes seconds to clean. And as mentioned I like resilience, I am semi-rural with overhead power lines so backup to the electric supply is a very good idea. The low cost is good too - but then not everyone will have space for outside LPG cylinders.

Stickybeaksid · 17/02/2020 17:55

Mine is a Nordemende one. Wasn’t particularly expensive. I agree it’s all about the pans. We have Circulon pans and cast iron skillets etc and they are way better than cheap brands of pan.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2020 18:12

Our induction hob came from ikea, as did the pans. The one we have looks like the one on the website for £260, which is slightly more than the gas ones, but we were having ours installed into a new kitchen extension so would have had to have had the gas supply extended and who knows how much that would have cost, whereas the hob wad installed as part of quite a bit of electrical work so probably hardly here or there.
