To not get the fuss about Nando's??

littlemissrose · 15/02/2020 10:23

Went to Nando's for the first time last night after my oldest dd asking to go as she'd heard how good it is...not very impressed I have to say! £40 for a very small wrap and fries two kids meals (chicken in a brioche bun) and a chicken burger and fries and soft drinks. Honestly would've been half the price in McDonalds for very similar food. Restaurant wasn't particularly clean either and it was a bit like having fast food but way more expensive. Am I right or just being an old moan Grin

I like cooking and hence when I know what I can make for even £12 I begrudge £35 or so (with drinks) for the 2 of us unless it’s better than what I can make. I would honestly rather buy 2 of the M&S dine in for 2s if I had a family- at way less cost and way better quality.

AndThenThereWereSeven · 15/02/2020 17:39

The kids love it - no idea why.

hunteddown · 15/02/2020 17:46

We like it and go often when we need something quick to eat.

SurferRona · 15/02/2020 17:47

OP, and all others are wrong. The AMAZING chicken livers with medium hot sauce make Nando's amazing. No other restaurants do chicken livers, other than high end London nursery food places (devilled, on brioche). I can forgive them anything so long as they do continue to do chicken livers. Grin

Lippy1234 · 15/02/2020 18:27

I like it and go a few times a year. I have a salad and my DH the chicken livers. I find the prices reasonable.

amaryl · 15/02/2020 18:30

I’ve been twice and it made me so furious I wanted to kill someone

Twiglets18 · 15/02/2020 20:49

Me neither, they queue out of the door at the one near us. We do get a take out from there sometimes tho as they do a steak pitta thing which is under 400 calories so a good take out option if I am dieting and need something quick on the way back from somewhere. It’s nice enough for under 400 cals

The spicy nut mix is out of this world tho and I often pop in and get a box of we’re going to the cinema.

19lottie82 · 15/02/2020 21:08

I love a Nando’s. Chicken thighs or a subset burger with spicy rice.

It’s dearer than most traditional fast food, but it’s not more expensive than most other restaurants. About £10 for a main with 2 sides (which really fills you up), that’s not really except these days, is it?

starfishmummy · 15/02/2020 21:21

DS likes it so we sometimes go but mostly order it to be delivered.
Dont like wagamamas - DH and I went once and we were seated on a long table with other people and the food was not brought out together neither of which would work with DS.

hopefulhalf · 15/02/2020 21:26

Why has no one mentioned the custard tarts ? Thats the real reason to go. We order a platter, and a big salad for a family of 4. On what planet does a chicken not feed 4 ?

Nowayorhighway · 15/02/2020 21:27

I’m the same, it’s majorly overrated.

Apirateslifeforme · 15/02/2020 21:33

We love it in our house, but mostly because it's where me and DH went on our first date, and where he first witnessed someone try and eat s burger with knife and fork. It took me fucking ages and I still looked like a tit.
It's more for the fact that's where we had our first date. DH makes me make it at home most of the time now.
He really cops the hump when we pay at Nandos, we could have actually gone out somewhere he says, I feel I've been robbed, he says, a proper meal at a proper restaurant would be about the same, he says.
I love it. I drown the chips and the burger in the piri sauce, and it's not the same if you buy it from the supermarket.

NameChangeNugget · 15/02/2020 21:34

It’s distinctly average

TheChosenTwo · 15/02/2020 21:40

It’s alright, I think it’s mainly teenagers that go and hang out there.
Fills a hole in the belly if my kids fancy lunch when we’re out shopping together. I don’t find it particularly expensive, It’s way more filling than a McDonald’s and there’s something all of us will eat.
I can’t get excited over it at all though, would never go there with just dp for a meal out, it’s literally a quick stop in with the dc and out ASAP.
I don’t understand people that queue up for it, it’s really not good enough to warrant that imo.
I personally prefer wagamamas but my youngest doesn’t.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/02/2020 21:55

I like it, and it’s particularly good in a group - work colleagues or whatever - because there’s no faffing with the bill.

Petals000 · 15/02/2020 21:56

I've never had one Confused

FemiLANGul · 15/02/2020 22:06

I like nandos, I low carb so it's good to have a place where you can choose sides that arent chips or bread!

It's a fairly standard fast food place though, not sure why some on here had such high expectations of it 🤷‍♀️

DollyDaydream70 · 15/02/2020 22:10

For some reason it's very popular and teenagers love it. I don't get it, I went once.. never again.

InACheeseAndPickle · 15/02/2020 22:43

It's nice enough but fairly expensive for what it is.

strawberrylipgloss · 15/02/2020 23:11

I suspect a major reason why our local one is so popular is because on weekends it's impossible to get a seat at McDonalds next door.

Nando's was much better quality and service before it went national. I used to go to the one in Earl's Court (London) in the late 90s.

RUSU92 · 15/02/2020 23:20

I like it. It's definitely one step up from McDs as you get a plate and cutlery for a start! I order 4 chicken thighs with peri chips and coleslaw for £12ish and usually can't finish it all - and I'm a right gannet. A £6 McDs meal wouldn't be anywhere near as much food or as tasty, plus you have to eat it off the plastic tray with your hands.

DP will only eat olives from Nandos, no other olives will do! And their spicy nuts are lush.

They do a good selection of veggie stuff and interesting sides (macho peas & grains and greens) which you won't get at McDs.

The little custard tarts are well over priced though. £2 a pop in there, but you can get them at Lidl for 49p each Grin

I reckon you've just ordered the wrong stuff if you don't like it.

WooMaWang · 16/02/2020 10:55

I took the kids to Nando's in Valentine's Day weekend a few years ago. It was full of teenagers in dates, which was both funny and sweet to see.

TitchyP · 16/02/2020 11:09

Totally underwhelmed when we went, a bit of plainish chicken and some chips and I had to queue up to collect it?
I think we must have being doing it wrong as others I know rave about itConfused

WooMaWang · 16/02/2020 11:19

They don't tend to make you queue to collect it. You queue to order and they bring it to the table when it's ready generally.

Obviously don't go to Nando's if you're expecting a fine dining experience. But it's an alright place to eat with toddlers or a birthday party of 10 year olds. And they really are pretty good for dietary requirements - more so than many comparable chains.

jackparlabane · 16/02/2020 11:53

It was one of the first places to do a range of veggie dishes so teens could go with a veggie/halal friend and they could feel more grown up than in McDonald's, and its less than a ripoff than Pizza Hut.
