To not get the fuss about Nando's??

Went to Nando's for the first time last night after my oldest dd asking to go as she'd heard how good it is...not very impressed I have to say! £40 for a very small wrap and fries two kids meals (chicken in a brioche bun) and a chicken burger and fries and soft drinks. Honestly would've been half the price in McDonalds for very similar food. Restaurant wasn't particularly clean either and it was a bit like having fast food but way more expensive. Am I right or just being an old moan Grin

I like the chicken. The whole chicken platter (with two bottomless drinks and 2 sides is good value at £14ish.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/02/2020 11:53

I dislike Nandos with a vengeance. Why pay so much to eat chicken and chips. It's not even cheap!

Vulpine · 15/02/2020 11:53

Not very good for chickens i agree but i do love a kfc too

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/02/2020 11:56

I don't mind it — most people can find something they like if you're out with a group. It's cooked to order, and I think the portion sizes are good.

I'm not saying it's haute cuisine, but it's similar to other chains. I'd prefer Nando's to a poor Italian restaurant.

gingersausage · 15/02/2020 11:56

@woodchuck99 what a load of sexist crap 🙄

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/02/2020 11:59

Oh, and I like the way you can choose how many and which sides you have. At most chains that isn't a choice you get.

MimiLaRue · 15/02/2020 12:00

I agree its overpriced but I dont think there is a "fuss" about it. I dont know anyone who regards Nandos as anything more than a high street chain restaurant. Its chicken and chips, thats all. I just view it for what it is. Its kind of like expecting 50 shades of grey to win a Pulitzer prize- you know its never going to happen so you adjust your expectations. Nandos is like the reading equivalent of Cosmo.

woodchuck99 · 15/02/2020 12:02

@woodchuck99 what a load of sexist crap

It's not sexist to say that many teenage girls have smaller appetites and teenage boys and men.Hmm Do you eat as much as your DH?

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 15/02/2020 12:05

Overpriced and poor portion sizes - we even had to order two meals for our son as the one that came out was tiny. Never again.

timetest · 15/02/2020 12:08

I just saw it as somewhere cheap, fast and a slightly healthier alternative to a burger bar. They also had a couple of vegetarian options plus you had real crockery and knives and forks. It wasn’t brilliant but okay if you were in a hurry and had teenagers with you.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 15/02/2020 12:09

There's hype about it?

I went to one once never again. It had delusions of being a restaurant but every time you wanted another drink you had to fekking queue up again, but the prices were similar to say zizzi's (a much nicer environment)

RaveOnThisCrazyFeeling · 15/02/2020 12:09

I wouldn't be too impressed by them donating what's left over. Lots of restaurants and grocery shops seek out charities to offload their surplus on to. It's cheaper than refuse charges (free if they can get the charity to pick it up) and good PR.

Don't get me wrong, great that the people using the soup kitchen get the food (if, unlike most on this thread, they like Nando's), but it's not really some amazing altruistic act from the company.

PlomBear · 15/02/2020 12:11

They don’t even do chicken in breadcrumbs do they? Just grilled chicken.

Thymelord · 15/02/2020 12:11

Do you eat as much as your DH

Yup, usually more. I have a big appetite.

What I don't get are these stupid snobbery based threads. Given that there are 340 Nandos in the UK, clearly LOTS of people enjoy it.

alibongo5 · 15/02/2020 12:33

@YessicaHaircut - glad to "meet" another fan! Sadly, I'm missing them returning to my home town as I'm already booked that night! I took a gang of friends along last year when they first visited and they all loved them. Scott is lovely - as are the others - they always stay and chat afterwards and answers any questions if you email him.

But I'll be seeing them at Bearded Theory Festival in May. Just hope it stops bloody raining by then!

megletthesecond · 15/02/2020 12:38

I really wanted to hate it but they are really good with food allergies and generally fast service.
The salads are good. I love a big salad I haven't had to prepare.

Percivalthebabyspider · 15/02/2020 12:40

Disgusting food and the times I have been I've always been left with an upset stomach.

PolloDePrimavera · 15/02/2020 12:40

Glorified KFC.

Sceptre86 · 15/02/2020 12:43

It's ok. They don't cut into the chicken skin to marinade it so the flavour is only on the outside of the chicken and inner part is bland! We go now and again but I prefer pepes which is also a heck of a lot cheaper.

Growingboys · 15/02/2020 12:44

Agree, it is rank. Cheap, nasty, dirty food for teenage boys.

I've been once and that was enough. Dirty cutlery, average food. Grim.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 15/02/2020 12:50

YANBU. Nando’s is overpriced shite. Even my teenager refuses to go there with his friends it’s that bad. Also don’t they use Halal chicken- that would put me off for a start!

woooooo · 15/02/2020 12:52

I have this same conversation with my DD27. She raves about it and I'm like 'But it's just chicken and chips!' 🤷‍♀️ I don't get the hype?

bluete · 15/02/2020 12:55

It used to be quite good value 10 years ago but now overpriced. yo sushi is now more popular with my teenage DD and her friends. My DD took me to yo sushi & I thought that was expensive.

Rosehipbubbles · 15/02/2020 13:01

I put it in the bracket as Frankie's and Benny's. I think the quality of the food is dubious too. Even dc agree it is shit after a brief phase of wanting to go all the time.

PonderTweek · 15/02/2020 13:01

I enjoyed the "cheeky Nando's" jokes some years ago, but went to Nando's once and was disappointed because it wasn't really cheeky at all. Sad I had some sort of a mushroom wrap and it was like chewing on a dead hand or something. My ex-colleagues really rate the chicken though.
