To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

The ones I saw as a teenager out in town always seemed to have quite intimidating personalities and towered over me, and I guess I didn't really understand them.

All the drag I've ever seen has been totally shit and talentless. Fat middle-aged men dressed up as nasty parodies of women lip syncing to crap songs - could not understand the attraction at all to be honest. Honestly a very low level of entertainment.

I have no opinion really as it's not part of my world nor do I watch the shows. But alot of teens here love it and love copying the makeup for fun and go to the shows in London. Seems much more mainstream now.

I agree it's become more mainstream. I think I admire those who do it, they are being their true self and living the life they want to live.

I went to a drag show a few Christmases ago. Tbh, I was bored. It wasn’t my cup of tea at all.
I’ve seen Kinky Boots at the theatre and absolutely loved that.

I think it's awful and sexist. I can't imagine wanting to watch shows like Drag Race.

All the transgender activism stuff has really put me off drag (not that I was ever into it, but it leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth now). I had the chance to see the show Kinky Boots the other day, but didn't want to for that reason.
Anyway, it's always had the feel of men laughing at women.

As a form of entertainment, I see no value or talent in it. Totally pointless but not unique. It’s yet another example of mindless showmanship for the masses who want to watch something easy which requires minimal brain input.
The same as all the shows like Dancing on Ice, and can’t remember the names of all the others. A lot of musicals are the same. Something colourful, glitzy and easy to mime to for the public to engage with without any need to use that old grey matter.

I absolutely hate drag.

Minstrel shows are not allowed.
Pretending to be disabled for laughs? Absolutely not.

The way that men, regardless of their sexual persuasion, get free reign to make a caricature of women, showcasing all of the things we are told to keep a lid on, and get laughs and praise for it really pisses me off.

Women have been shamed for so long for being overly sexual. For swearing. For wearing revealing outfits and a lot of makeup. But put a wig on a man and he can do it.

With cultural appropriation being such a massive issue in this day and age it just baffles me that we let the equivalent run wild.

A pity that people living the lives they want to live so often seems to be about dressing up and prancing around. Not like there's anything important happening in the world at the moment or anything.

Well it's got a lot more mainstream acceptance but it's all going off in lots of directions, really. It used to be people just didn't like it 'cos it was seen as 'gay and pervy' although acceptable in certain forms of family entertainment, whereas now there's also a feminist axis saying it's all misogyny and normalising porn for children if they come within 20ft of a drag queen.

DD (11) loves drag queens and is going to fancy dress event soon as one (I'm coming with her as a drag king)

Drag queens aren’t transgender, I just wanted to put that out there. The two shouldn’t be conflated.

Drag queens in Leeds are definitely still middle aged men in wigs . I’m not really bothered by them either way, Ru Paul isn’t my sorta thing.

Been to a drag place in Manchester and also foofoo’s in Blackpool (?) many moons ago and yeah, not for me. Men miming to music in bad clothes/make-up. Just not funny IMO.

I did go to see Priscilla QOTD in London though and really enjoyed that - but they were actually talented actors/singers!

I don't think people not being interested in watching the shows or attending shows means they are against it, at least not all of them. I have watched very little of drag race just to see what it was about and it wasn't for me. I just don't find it fascinating or entertaining as well as some of the language on the show was too much for my taste and I am hardly well mannered. Did watch pose on Netflix recently which is less about drag and more about transexuality, subculture etc in 1980's new york. Much more interested in what people have endured through history to get to this point of celebrating diversity.

Some drag acts are very funny. I like the caustic humour. Some are a bit shit and cringeworthy.

I don't understand people who disagree with drag on principle still take their kids to pantomimes, it's basically the same.

Misogynistic men putting on womanface because the female is intrinsically deserving of mockery. No thank you.

I have no interest whatsoever what people get up to as long as it does no harm to others, however I found myself enjoying rupauls drag race. I appreciated the stories behind the outfits, there was one lad talking about how hard it was to be gay growing up in Ireland and others talking about the fear and stigma of AIDS in the eighties.
I liked the skill that went into the design and creation of the outfits and make up.

I'm on the fence as to if it is disrespectful to women, or just playing on stereotypes for artistic effect.

I hate it. It denigrates women and is nasty, unfunny, talentless stuff. They look nothing like real women. They are unpleasant parodies who make fun of women in a horrible, bitchy way.

If you don't get it, and I didn't, you need to watch Drag Queen (Netflix). It's the most endearing show after you get used to it, and in the same way as homosexuality used to be thought of as weird but is now largely accepted as an 'innate drive' if you like, cross-dressing/drag is very much the same thing. It's harmless and brings enormous pleasure to those who do it or support it, so why not?

I don't believe it's mocking women, I think it's celebrating them. Some drag queens are transgender.
I think many of the contestants have suffered a lot and some are disowned by their families, or they have not told them the truth about their career.

Trash City at Glastonbury was always my fave area. A great book is Sex, Drag and Males Roles -it's about female to male drag artists, ie women impersonating men. Totally fascinating and makes me want to try it out.
