To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

Also this is very disingenuous- there are many horrible terms I could use to refer to gay men and say “oh I don’t mean them in a derogatory way!”. Doesn’t make them not offensive to actual gay men.

12345kbm · 16/02/2020 19:35

@VeryBowie What does it mean?

VeryBowie · 16/02/2020 19:41

"A term used to describe adrag queenwho looks extremely feminine or one who convincingly resembles a biological woman."

So not derogatory or mean. More of a compliment...in a roundabout sort of way!

MimiLaRue · 16/02/2020 19:45

According to Ru Pauls glossary of terms it refers to:

"ADJ: A term used to describe a drag queen who looks extremely feminine, or one who convincingly resembles a cis woman. The term is a reference to the scent of a vagina, which is colloquially likened to the smell of fish"

Its fcking offensive to me and I dont give a shit how its meant. This is just another vile example of men telling women what they are "allowed" to be offended by. Absolutely gross.

This is true, Russell. But I've spent more time than I really should have over the years in gay bars and clubs, sometimes seeing drag, and I've never heard women insulted as a class - called cunts for example, as some people seem to imagine happens. And I don't think I've ever heard the word fish used! These are straw men.

12345kbm · 16/02/2020 19:45

Why do they use the term 'Fish' why not a Drag Queen who looks like a woman?

You're wrong btw.

You missed out the fish part. Its because your vagina smells according to them

Nope. Just because you haven’t personally experienced it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I live in Brighton - we have ALOT of drag acts here and I have heard both cunt and fishy used multiple times. It’s spiteful and nasty and mysogynistic.

I have also heard the term fishy used by Ru Paul contestants a couple of times.

Winesalot · 16/02/2020 20:44

Oh and one time it was used with hands wafting their genital area. They definitely knew where the term came from.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 20:54

I've definitely never been called nor heard of a female being called a cunt at a drag show.

I have on the other hand heard many heterosexual men (and women) shout it around in life.
I guess it just comes down to how much class you have and the words you choose to call someone.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 20:58

Nobody is wrong is for being offended here. If you're offended, nobody can take that away from you. That's what you feel.

Just as there are others who aren't offended in the slightest and have never been mistreated by drag Kings or Queens or gay men and women.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 21:04

Typo
*nobody is wrong for being offended here.

Just woke up from a lovely nap!

ElloBrian · 16/02/2020 21:26

Hi, @Notimeforaname, it’s really good that you’ve accepted you’re in the minority here. Very encouraging to see you acknowledging how many people disagree with you in such a positive spirit. Flowers we’re all happy to keep helping you with your understanding of other people’s perspectives so keep trying!

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 21:37

Thank you kindly ElloBrian !
As you said, its clear I have accepted it so I really don't need any help with it or to "keep trying"

But thanks for thinking of me! SmileFlowers

MsTSwift · 16/02/2020 21:40

The nicey niceness is really creepy btw. Like those cult members with those weird smiles

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 21:40

I'm very happy to hear others opinions and it in no way angers me or offends me.
It just reminds me how grateful I am that we can all accept each others opinions and feelings.

MsTSwift · 16/02/2020 21:42

Eww! Creepy McCreep!

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 21:42

I understand happiness, understanding and kindness can be creepy for those who have not much experience with it.
Hopefully you can find more of this in your life.

MsTSwift · 16/02/2020 21:46

Ha! Weirder and weirder. I am super happy and normal thanks. Just don’t like drag. You on the other hand..

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 21:48

We can't like everybody.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 21:50

I also understand that you have to resort to name calling to get your point across.
But I respect your honesty.

VeryBowie · 16/02/2020 22:06

Creepy McCreep would make a wonderful drag name. What do you think @Notimeforaname shall we start a show together?

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 22:14

Very Bowie,
Yes!!! Grin
