To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

yet people said drag kings weren’t offensive as they were women...

Could you remind me what the term is that drag kings use to describe a king that could pass as an actual man, please? You know, the one that is the equivalent to 'fishy'?

Russellbrandshair · 12/02/2020 22:55

I don’t like drag- as others have said, it’s always middle aged talentless men trying desperately to be funny and portraying hideous versions of femininity to get a cheap laugh.

I find them deeply mysogynistic and I hate their exaggerated and offensive parodies of women. It’s fcking gross and you’d never get away with such horrible representations of other marginalised groups.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/02/2020 22:57

I would love to hear someone explain how exactly drag is a celebration of women. I've seen this trotted out again and again, yet no one ever explains what they mean.

GinTonic · 12/02/2020 22:57

I don't have any problem with men dressing up in extravagant clothing, putting on make up etc and my take on it is that for some gay men this is their way of breaking out of straight male stereotypes and showing their true self.

However unfortunately I think it often goes beyond that into an insulting parody. I don't know if you remember the guy on first dates who said he liked to "cross dress", his alter ego was called Hymen something or other and was a weird parody of a hyper sexualised woman, I found that all very distasteful.

DoraleeRhodes · 12/02/2020 22:58

When I was younger I used to enjoy watching drag, PQotD etc etc and I have watched most of the seasons of Drag Race.

As time has gone on though I’ve got increasingly uncomfortable with the misogyny, use of ‘fishy’ etc. Whether this is something that has become prominent as drag has become more mainstream, or just I view it differently now I’m older I’m not sure but it’s not something I’m comfortable with now and no longer watch.

Muminabun · 12/02/2020 22:59

Do what you want and all that but drag is adult sexual entertainment And should not be anywhere near children. Some of the footage of drag queens with children at public libraries is sickening and grooming in plain sight.

Oakmaiden · 12/02/2020 23:00

I deeply dislike it for the reasons given above.

However, I do just about tolerate it in local panto - I think because that does just seem to be a man dressing up as an over the top version of a woman, rather than mocking as such. At least our local panto seems not to be overtly misogynistic. And it is sort of a tradition - panto dames and principal boys. So I don't know how to reconcile my tolerance for that with my dislike in general of drag.

YgritteSnow · 12/02/2020 23:01

I think someone is trying to get a MN kick off going with resulting screen shots and outrage on twitter.

Drag is boring as shit and totally inappropriate in places like libraries. Parents who get involved with this just wake the fuck up will you!

bluehighlighter · 12/02/2020 23:02

Apparently women as principal boys have mostly died out.

PapayaCoconut · 12/02/2020 23:03

How come nobody thinks blackface is a "celebration of black people"? To me, they look waaay too close for comfort.

Ingridla · 12/02/2020 23:03

I find it uncomfortable at best, downright insulting if am honest. I've never seen drag race ru Paul or that stuff with Michelle visage as I'd rather stare at a blank wall

A WOMAN CANNOT BE A DRAG QUEEN. By the very definition.

If someone who identifies as a woman (either cis gender or trans) dresses as a drag queen they are effectively a costume of a costume.

Still, the point remains, that being a drag queen does not come under the banner of trans.

It is a parody and a mockery of femininity. Femininity unique to the female gender.

Being a crossdresser in life does not excuse it. Being gay does not excuse it.

It's not okay to appropriate something unique to an entire group of people (particularly things they cannot help) and to use it for your own personal benefits.

IF THE KARDASHIANS CANNOT HAVE BRAIDS, MEN CAN'T HAVE EVERYTHING BUT THE VAGINA AND TAKE THE PISS OUT OF IT

Bluerussian · 12/02/2020 23:04

I can't honestly say it interests me. I saw a bit of Vogue dancing on a show recently and liked that but I like dancing so I would.; most dancing involves play acting, striking a post with accompanying dress and that is no different.

I agree it's become more mainstream. I think I admire those who do it, they are being their true self and living the life they want to live.
.........

"Living the life they want to live", probably, though I imagine their lives are more varied in real life.

"Being their true self", depends what you mean by true. I'm a straight woman, if I dressed and passed as a man for a day I might think it great fun but I would not be my true self, I'd be acting a part.

Nothing wrong with acting and posing in moderation.

Shinycat · 12/02/2020 23:06

Nope, not for me either! Awful and misogynistic as many posters have said.

It's in the same vein as those fucking HIDEOUS male strip shows. I have been invited to a few in the past, and refused, and have been called (several times) a boring old prude. Well so be it then, I'll be a prude.

Better that, than a sad desperate lecherous woman sitting with a bunch of equally sad desperate lecherous women, slobbering over a bunch of naked men half their age. Vile.

A woman I know posted a pic on facebook of her with a male stripper's dick in her face, and she had a look on her face as if she was having an orgasm. She had 3 kids aged from 12 to 19. They all unfriended her on facebook after that, and the 19 y.o. daughter (who was at uni,) didn't speak to her for a month. Vile behaviour. I'd expect mine to disown me if I ever did anything like that.

ActualHornist · 12/02/2020 23:13

Wtf is a ‘bio queen’? @MorganKitten?

Sagradafamiliar · 12/02/2020 23:14

What's this I keep reading about drag queens in children's libraries? This isn't a thing is it? I'm still reeling from picking my three year old from nursery to find he's had sex education :(

Boireannachlaidir · 12/02/2020 23:23

Anachronistic and the only reason it's become "mainstream" is that someone's pushing an agenda and it is seeping into parts of our lives we couldn't have imagined before. The horrific Drag Queen Story time is a case in point. All part of the insidious pornification of society.

OP would you have said years ago that blackface was just "people being who they want to be"? Why use this lame excuse for womenface which is what this is Hmm

sleepyhead · 12/02/2020 23:24

Danny LaRue, Kenny Everett, Les Dawson, Dick Emery.

Yes, do tell us how far we've come with drag on mainstream tv.

Balkinfly · 12/02/2020 23:28

Have always and still do hate drag. Ot is vile tbh.

Whatisthisfuckery · 12/02/2020 23:31

I really hate drag. It’s misogynistic beyond belief. I am a veteran of many prides and the utter contempt towards women, especially lesbians is vile.

GCAcademic · 12/02/2020 23:35

What's this I keep reading about drag queens in children's libraries? This isn't a thing is it? I'm still reeling from picking my three year old from nursery to find he's had sex education

Yes, it’s definitely a thing. In museums too.

JamesBlonde1 · 12/02/2020 23:36

Always knocks me sick. Not funny at all. Always overtly sexual.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 12/02/2020 23:37

Those pictures! What the actual fuck?

SpokeTooSoon · 12/02/2020 23:41

they are being their true self

Anyone else totally over hearing this as a justification for everything?

It makes me cringe. It is not celebrating women. It is reducing women to stereotypes and parodies. It’s embarrassing. Much the same as men dressing up as women for panto - big boobs, large belly, squeaky voice - all done to point out the “ridiculousness“ of females.

Balkinfly · 12/02/2020 23:41

Fucking hell. Those pictures. We have lost control of this atm.
