Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

AIBU?

There's a fabulous phrase I came across on Mumsnet for the first time the other day which I think fits the bill here:

"If he were any more intelligent, he'd need watering."

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-mental-health-coronavirus-us-symptoms-cdc-white-house-press-briefing-a9446771.html

'Donald Trump is "so severely mentally troubled that he is a great danger to our nation" and must be removed from office, according to a group of international mental health professionals calling for the president to resign or for the "complete removal" of his decision-making powers leading the White House response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The World Mental Health Coalition has issued a "prescription for survival" that urges several calls to action, including the invocation of the 25th amendment of the US Constitution, which would relinquish the president from office once the chief executive is determined unfit.'

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 08:10

In order to get an answer out of him, reporters need to soften him up.

Start of with saying some support for what he's doing so far, and then ask the difficult question. But frame it in a way so it doesn't sound difficult.

Just getting him to respond with 'its a nasty question" does no one any favours/

It's an art form.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/04/2020 08:14

25th Amendment is an option, but it requires Pence and McConnell to rat on the guy they've been brown-nosing all this time for fear of his 'base'.

If he caught it, it's on. Otherwise, no way.

Roussette · 05/04/2020 08:37

Dear oh dear oh dear.

This is scary. Why is Trump doing a presser and pushing people to take hydroxychloroquine. I presume he has a stake in it somewhere? He is sounding absolutely deranged. The whispering voice urging people 'take it, take it'.

How in God's name are the people around him allowing him to do this, why isn't anyone stepping up and stopping him...
It's a dangerous drug that can kill, yet Trump is pushing it like it's a paracetemol.

Indeed but the president should be a strong and capable leader not a fragile unstable person around whom others must tiptoe bow and scrape.
He is not fit for purpose.

I watched the 2nd half of yesterday's Covid-19 press update. Each one I've seen has been more surreal than the previous one. Yesterday he was on another level with the focus on death, death and more death. And then the urgent whispering about hydroxychloroquine...

This sums up yesterday's 'performance' very accurately.

Roussette · 05/04/2020 13:26

That tweet sums it up. I think death does turn him on. Like he is an emperor with all these little people and he has their lives in his hands. He also used to bang on and on about women with tied up with duct tape and raped. That was his last bizarre turn on.

He honestly has severe mental problems. The whispering yesterday like he was brainwashing people.

The only saving grace was Fauci leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. He was hating every minute of what Trump was saying, his body language was obvious.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/04/2020 13:33

If COVID19 or a common cold could take him down and get him 25th-ed, give that virus a medal.

AcrossthePond55 · 05/04/2020 15:12

Honestly, Dr Fauci is a lone voice of truth on the podium amidst the lies and propaganda. It must be so hard for him to stand there and listen to that shitshow knowing that he's going to have to contradict 99.99% of what's being said without getting himself fired. He's a master diplomat dancing on the edge of the abyss. One wrong word and he will lose his job.

We don't even try to watch anymore. And you know what....there hasn't been a time so far that we feel feel we should have or that we missed some important news. Gov Newsom and the 'lying MSM' have been keeping us well informed by telling us the truth, thank you very much.

I'm grateful to those of you who are able to tolerate his insanity and report his remarks here, in tones of either humour or outrage. You are the 'spoonful of sugar making the medicine go down'.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/04/2020 17:01

I would never deny anyone their right to worship. However:

UYScuti · 05/04/2020 17:17

the weird whispery drawling that he does, as if he is savouring and enjoying the death and suffering that he anticipates
he put's me in mind of pantomime villain
it's all a performance to him, not real life, these deaths are not real people who matter, that's why he speaks of them in a performative manner.
To him they are just props in the show of which he is the star, he hogs the limelight, does anything he can to keep all eyes on him

UYScuti · 05/04/2020 17:24

You are the 'spoonful of sugar making the medicine go down
I'm so appalled to see the USA headed up by the orange twit:( and grateful for a place to sound off about him!
He's going to get worse isnt he, he loves his whispery drawling, it's what he did on the rallies he cant control his impulse to do it, and to embellish generally.
He's just going to get more and more 'in character' until they have to.....erm....inject him with something and then carry him off like a felled rhino?

Roussette · 05/04/2020 17:38

This is proper leadership.

Andrew Cuomo
@NYGovCuomo
I wish I could promise New Yorkers this will be over soon. I can't.

Here's what I can promise.

I will continue to give you the facts and I will make decisions based on science and data.

New Yorkers deserve nothing less.

HoldMyLobster · 05/04/2020 17:53

I liked Andrew Cuomo's presser thanking the Chinese for sending 1,000 ventilators.

That must have driven Trump crazy, hearing that a) Cuomo is managing to get the ventilators he needs and b) the Chinese are making Trump look like the bad/incompetent guy.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/04/2020 20:39

HM the Queen this evening said nothing about what we ought to do (apart from be the people she is proud of), but refrained from giving seriously bad advice, blaming anyone, or making it all about her.

I know which of them I have more time for.

TheSparklyPussycat · 05/04/2020 20:43

No briefing today AIUI, but Trump will be meeting with the Task Force on a golf course

TheSparklyPussycat · 05/04/2020 23:11

It appears he has changed his mind about the briefing.

AcrossthePond55 · 06/04/2020 01:12

I watched the Queen's address. BBC must have removed all filters for it because it's usually 'blocked' unless you log in.

She is such a calm presence, isn't she? And with a message of reassurance rather than bloviating self-importance. The difference between her demeanor and Scrotus' is unbelievable.

We read today (avoiding 'live' news shows) that the Surgeon General said that this coming week will be 'the worst week America has ever known'. I didn't read any further.

@UYScuti I hear you! And yes, I think he's going to get worse, much worse. This is finally the situation that he can't control and can't really 'bluff' his way out of. Every lie he tells to 'soothe' us ends up being outed as a lie. But will it result in him being removed from office? No. All we can do is take care of each other, hang tight, and keep our eyes on November.

That's what's so terrifying. I am just so grateful to live in a 'blue' state and that we have Gavin Newsom to 'protect' us.

lionheart · 06/04/2020 01:41

UYScuti 'felled rhino' made me laugh.

Roussette · 06/04/2020 07:18

Exactly. The thing is.. in this sort of situation you have to rely on the professionals, health and scientists, and take their message to the people. And not be the expert. You're just a mouthpiece in fact. Trump of course is the expert in e everything and know better than anyone else.

Why hasn't anyone from the medical field like Fauci stood up and disputed the hydroxychloroquine because what he said was so wrong. It's untested and could be dangerous and yet Trump is literally urging people to take it.
