Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:
twitter.com/WLaowai8/status/1225637845508837377

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

making me wonder if we should start stocking up on 'stuff' at home in case of being quarantined or sick

i'm decluttering atm and letting cupboards run down etc but maybe i should start doing the opposite. i never usually panic or anything when you hear of this kind of thing, but this seems a bit different

NaturalBornWoman · 17/02/2020 15:49

LarkDescending that sounds insane!

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/02/2020 16:10

making me wonder if we should start stocking up on 'stuff' at home in case of being quarantined or sick

What would be the harm in doing that? - There is none. Only a potential benefit.

DenimDrift · 17/02/2020 16:12

true yes. i'm not usually a worrier but basic medicines will probably go off our shelves quite quickly and i did read that most of the ingredients are sourced in china

LarkDescending · 17/02/2020 16:13

NaturalBornWoman yes it is rather alarming given the numbers of new infections still being diagnosed on the ship (67 on 15 Feb, 70 on 16 Feb...). Actually, according to The Guardian there has been a recent change to the policy: quarantine will end on Wednesday 19 Feb for those who have tested negative, unless they shared a cabin with someone who tested positive. Let’s hope for everyone’s sake that the negative tests are accurate!

MissPoldark · 17/02/2020 16:24

How can we stop worrying? I can’t maintain this constant anxious state. I know it’s no good for my health but it’s difficult to control.
I already had enough to worry about before. I haven’t got space for this.
What am I to do SadSad

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/02/2020 16:27

If anyone wants to come over to the preppers threads I promise you we are more girl guides p[epared for any eventuality than gin-toting redneck

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/02/2020 16:28

Err that's a slip and a half. We are gin toting. We are not gun-toting Grin Gin

wherearemychickens · 17/02/2020 16:30

Lol

LarkDescending · 17/02/2020 16:32

Re: worrying. All current signs are that the UK is well-prepared to deal with this. Plans are in hand to deal with any escalation. Those of us who are not paid to worry about it don’t need to worry. We can usefully pay attention to public health advice as it develops - that’s the main thing.

ifonly4 · 17/02/2020 16:34

As mentioned by Hasa worth joining us on Preppers. If you can afford it, it's never going to do any harm to get a few extras in. Most things will have a long sell by date, so can easily be used at a later date.

DenimDrift · 17/02/2020 16:35

for once i'm not sneering at preppers! i'm coming over for a read

yolofish · 17/02/2020 16:45

I don't sneer at the kind of preppers we have on here - make sure you've got enough looroll/gin/pasta for the zombie apocalypse or a bit of snow, that's just sensible.

There is something kind of weird about stocking up on a nuclear arsenal behind the garden shed though... bellinisurge is a sensible prepper.

LarkDescending · 17/02/2020 16:48

99 new cases on the Diamond Princess today.

I had a wry smile when I saw that Princess Cruises are offering all Diamond Princess passengers a voucher for a free future cruise, in addition to a 100% refund for this one. I wonder how many of them will be signing up to another adventure at sea?

ofwarren · 17/02/2020 16:50

Preppers board is fab.
Most are just prepping for potentially being isolated for 2 weeks. Comes in handy too when you get flu or something like norovirus and can't get to the shop.

peridito · 17/02/2020 16:57

eeeyoresmiles

There seems to be a possibility that a high viral load makes it much worse. If we do end up having to nurse family members at home, reducing that as much as possible will be important, but very hard

that sounds interesting ,I don't know anything about high viral loads .Are there ways to reduce ? Can a non medical ordinary person take any action ?

GorkyMcPorky · 17/02/2020 16:59

I'm feeling better the longer we go with no reported new cases in the UK. I'm prepped as far as I can be so for now, no news is good news. I was wondering earlier of were being told the full story, and we might well not be, but presumably all countries are required to report cases to WHO.

GorkyMcPorky · 17/02/2020 17:00

*if we're

My proofreading is shockingly lax.

Iamanaubergine · 17/02/2020 17:04

So if by some chance we don’t have a major outbreak here and cases worldwide drop off - what happens then?
Do governments quietly forget about it or do they continue developing a vaccine then roll out a mass vaccination program rolled in with flu?
Or something else?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 17/02/2020 17:07

www.itv.com/news/2020-02-16/millions-with-flu-symptoms-may-need-to-self-isolate-due-to-coronavirus/

If the gov are to stop testing at 100 cases and you have to self isolate at home - this could actually mean if you get really sick they're not intending to treat you?
I mean if you're at home and have a fever and a cough - you may or may not be able to cope.
This can descend to cytokine storm/sepsis very very quickly. (I've had sepsis when I was fit and healthy and had I not been in hospital already I would have died as I went from Ok to fighting for life within about an hour. The wait for an ambulance would have killed me.)
I also think of stoic people like DH who had a polyp pressing on his brain - he only went to the doctor at the point his eye sight failed. The horrific headaches and nausea were just something you had to get through. Someone like DH would only ask for help at the point he was literally on death's door - again by time you call anyone too late.

So to me self isolate is a case of "we can't be bothered/dont't have the resources to treat you/ survival of the fittest."

LarkDescending · 17/02/2020 17:08

If Covid-19 recedes (for now), efforts to develop a vaccine and therapeutic response will presumably continue - as has been the case previously with SARS and MERS:

www.niaid.nih.gov/diseases-conditions/coronaviruses-therapeutics-vaccines

DenimDrift · 17/02/2020 17:08

i think vaccinations take years to develop, though i could be wrong!

Ontopofthesunset · 17/02/2020 17:20

There can be a harm in stocking up with things you don't really need as it reduces supply and if everyone is doing it people who have really run out of things they need won't be able to get them. It's amazing that everywhere has sold out of hand sanitiser gel. I always have it anyway for travel but I couldn't get any more if I ran out as presumably some people have bought much more than they need.

Ciwirocks · 17/02/2020 17:20

I disagree YoursTunbridgeWells I would take self isolate at home to mean that they won’t be expecting everyone with mild symptoms to attend hospital for testing if you become very unwell and need hospital treatment they will then test you. This is pretty much how it works with current circulating flu’s and Coronaviruses. How many times can you self isolate for 2 weeks though! You surely can’t do it for every cold so I assume there will be guidelines over what symptoms to look for, lots of people will have chronic coughs anyway and only 40 odd percent present with a temp so can’t use that as a factor either

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/02/2020 17:32

There can be a harm in stocking up with things you don't really need as it reduces supply and if everyone is doing it people who have really run out of things they need won't be able to get them.

Most preppers get the things they think they will need before the panic buying starts. That enables shops to restock which means more for everyone.
