Where did you go on your honeymoon?

DP and I are getting married in September and need to start planning our honeymoon. Where did you go and did you enjoy it? We are very open to all sorts of ideas from places in Europe to more long haul destinations. We aren’t so keen on city breaks and prefer being a bit off the beaten track (we’ll hire a car wherever we go).
We’ll also have a long weekend somewhere in the UK.
Thanks

Amalfi, five nights. Was lovely, so beautiful.

Chanel05 · 10/02/2020 16:54

I went to Honolulu in Hawaii. It's a brilliant place to go if you like evening drinks, a wide range of food and days at the beach. I actually enjoy none of these things so it wasn't my favourite holiday I've been on Grin

Seychelles.

Kittensinmysupper · 10/02/2020 17:14

Canal boat down the Somerset and Avon canal.. amazing, no 'people' around us. Glorious isolation.

The hireboat company even put a white ribbon around the bow and rose petals on the bed.. moored up wherever we felt like it. ''Twas fab

I went to Bora Bora. Beautiful but over hyped and expensive. Also took an eternity to reach. London-LA. LA-tahiti. Tahiti-BoraBora. Then a terrifying boat ride. I'd only recommend it for a few days with hindsight.

I would recommend mauritius however and also Havanna, Cuba. I teamed this with the Caribbean coast but in reality it could have been anywhere, havanna is special.

Lake Garda, Verona, Venice, Florence, Rome.

I really like Italy Grin

Had an amazing holiday in Langkawin Malaysia a few years ago too, absolutely idyllic but horrendously long journey. Was a lovely place.

Seoul and Northern Vietnam

Had an AMAZING time in seoul - what a city! The food is just unbelievable

Vietnam was gorgeous - Hanoi was our base, but we trekked in sapa and ninh binh before ending on a 3 day cruise around halong bay. Beautiful!

Would do it again in a heartbeat

Never had one, we had 2 children when we got married.
We are having it next year 15 years later and after 25 years together. Grin

Scotland - 29 years ago tomorrow - it snowed and was really beautiful (and unlike in England things don't grind to a halt for a bit of the white stuff). We went for some lovely walks, visited distilleries and tartan mills and took the train into Edinburgh for the day.

@damntheman I came on this thread to say we went to Tioman Island too - about 12 years ago now - it was amazing. We finished up with a long weekend in Kuala Lumpur. I always wanted to take the children back to Tioman, but the flight is too far for them.

Flew to Calgary and toured the Canadian Rockies in a car. We did Canmore, Banff, a night at the icefield with a hike onto the glacier, Jasper, Lake Louise (hiked to the Plaine of six glaciers trail to the mountain teahouse) and ended with 4 nights at Fairmont hot springs resort. We visited a lot of hot springs! It was perfect.

In September I might consider Vermont to see the leaves turning and Toronto, Niagara, New York etc as a bit of a tour?

jakeyboy1 · 10/02/2020 19:14

Barbados and Antigua. Did loads of trips and loads of chilling too. Have been back to Barbados several times, Antigua is the most stunning island I've been too but it was too quiet for us!

zafferana · 10/02/2020 19:14

Hawaii - it was magical. It's a long way though and it's expensive. Not sure you could do it from the UK for two of you for £4k if you want to stay somewhere nice. Sept is a lovely time of year in Europe though. With that budget at that time of year I'd probably go to a Greek island. There are over 1000, so it would be easy to get off the beaten track, if that's what you fancy. Sicily is fabulous too - you could drive round the whole island - visit Greek temples and gorgeous small islands by hydrofoil. Google the Aeolian and Egadi Islands - heaven!

We got married in Vegas and stayed there for our honeymoon

Loved every second of it and have been back a couple of times since. It really feels like home there, which is a weird feeling especially for someone like me!

Mammyofonlyone · 10/02/2020 19:33

Zanzibar. Nice. Honeymoon friendly. Fantastic hotels. Prob wouldn't go back though just because I feel we've seen it now. We have some stories to tell of our time there though. Pleased we chose it

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/02/2020 19:39

Scotland. Was an amazing week.

grannycake · 10/02/2020 19:46

A folding caravan in a field in Glencoe - in February!

Gin96 · 10/02/2020 19:56

We went to Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Perth, Brisbane, Singapore, round the world trip, it was fantastic, I don’t think we will ever be able to afford it again, we were away for 4 weeks.

Lindor2828 · 10/02/2020 20:22

The Maldives - it was the best time of our lives! Could recommend it enough, pure paradise!

Daisy95 · 10/02/2020 20:27

We got married I Mexico however felt like that wasn’t a honeymoon with 30 family members with us 😂 we then couldn’t decide, so did Ibiza in a lush hotel but had it as our last party holiday and new York for a week! We definitely had the best year!

Thegreatfruittheft · 10/02/2020 20:40

The Maldives 29 years ago when it took 24 hours to get there and was a little basic 😁. Fabulous honeymoon and amazing memories. Sadly the island is no longer a resort after the reef was destroyed 😢

Stroan · 10/02/2020 20:40

California and Las Vegas - road tripped from San Diego to San Francisco via Disneyland, LA, Pismo Beach and Monterey. Then flew to Vegas.

We went over Christmas so that we could have a longer break, it was the most wonderful way to spend our first married Christmas. We went whale watching in Monterey Bay on Christmas Day.

anonymouse · 10/02/2020 21:02

We did a minimoon in Rome then later went to Borneo (Shangri la) and Singapore. It was incredible!
Our friends joke that we take honeymoon-esque holidays so other recommendations are:
-Pacific coast highway (LA- San Fran) stopping along the way, few nights in Napa then off to Hawaii- Maui is a gorgeous island.
-Sandals Jamaica (Montego Bay) with their deals you can get a decent price on a butler service room. I was unsure at first but you can say how much or little they do and it is very nice to always have space reserved at the beach with a cooler of champagne everyday. Plus you get the best seats in all of the restaurants. Seasoned Sandals goers say that Antigua is one of their best resorts.
-Tulum in Mexico although it may be touristy now. 7 years ago it was untouched and beautiful.
-Shangri la le Tousserok, Mauritius
-Zanzibar Riu adults only hotel, okay so yet to go but VERY much looking forward to this esp as have DS now so never have kid free time.

ispyachocolatepie · 10/02/2020 21:19

Bermuda - beautiful but we had 2 small children in tow with us so we didn't get to relax half as much as I would have liked to! Expensive but so lovely - would love to return one day
