Where did you go on your honeymoon?

DP and I are getting married in September and need to start planning our honeymoon. Where did you go and did you enjoy it? We are very open to all sorts of ideas from places in Europe to more long haul destinations. We aren’t so keen on city breaks and prefer being a bit off the beaten track (we’ll hire a car wherever we go).
We’ll also have a long weekend somewhere in the UK.
Thanks

Didn't have one, went to the Maldives a year beforehand though

justasking111 · 10/02/2020 12:43

I would not book just now with the coronovirus, see how that pans out.

Oh also recommend Sri Lanka, flights are cheaper if you use a middle east carrier. I can vouch for its beauty as it currently watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean!

Isles of Scilly. Perfection.

A week in Brittany, £400 for ferry and gite and borrowed my mum's car. We were young and poor. It was a wonderful week, perfect Indian Summer weather and deserted beaches. Eating fabulous food and swigging cheap red wine and not having to get up for breakfast.

Vegas! But we got married there so was already there. We didn't stay in Vegas much though, was just our base. We traveled to death valley, area 51, grand canyon, Hoover dam etc so can do a lot from there.

Lake Como, incredible place. Was in awe of the views for the whole 10 days - it felt like another world it was so beautiful!

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/02/2020 12:49

Madeira. We stayed on the outskirts of Funchal which was the best of both worlds, lovely museums and gardens in the city but also lovely trips to rainforest and mountains

FruityWidow · 10/02/2020 12:51

Off grid cottage in Northumberland for a weekend.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/02/2020 12:53

Dartmouth. We really like Dartmouth though.

Kenya and the Seychelles. Three weeks. It was blissful. Nearly fifteen years ago now but still remember it like it was yesterday!

emmaluvseeyore · 10/02/2020 12:55

Slovenia. Had 4 days in Ljubljana and 10 nights in the mountains. We had a great time.

Blackandgreenteas · 10/02/2020 12:56

Went to a few different places in France, travelled by train. Some of it was really nice - started off in a lovely chateau etc - but exh hadn’t planned properly (he wanted to plan it!) so went a bit awry at the end, where we ended up staying in a static caravan for several nights. Not my idea of a honeymoon!

Also he was incredibly mean re eating out but would never book half/ full board / places with meal packages etc.

caringcarer · 10/02/2020 12:56

We spent two weeks in Scotland visiting castles among other things. We went up the West side and then down East side. Very enjoyable. We went on viaduct in Harry Potter film and visited the beautiful islands and highlands. We had a great time.

foreveranxious2 · 10/02/2020 12:57

We went to Mauritius for 2 weeks and it was amazing!

TheVanguardSix · 10/02/2020 13:00

I've never had a honeymoon. DH and I insist that LIFE is the honeymoon. Arf arf. But if I were to do it all again:

Cambodia- Angkor Wat would be amazing
The Stockholm Archipelago (gorgeous and not in Stockholm but close enough if you want to plug into it.)
Morskie Oko Lake in Poland (and the surrounding region- glorious!)
Banff, Canada
Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula

whiteroseredrose · 10/02/2020 13:00

Granada, Cordoba and Seville....in December because I hate sun. We stayed in the Parador within the grounds of the Alhambra and had a view of the Generalife gardens from the bath! Lovely.

mullyluo · 10/02/2020 13:05

We travelled around South Africa did safari, garden route, Cape Town. Rented a car and drove most of it (if I remember correctly they drive on the left which made things easier). The time difference isn't too bad and sept/oct time is a good time to go.

WarrenNicole · 10/02/2020 13:05

I know you said you’re not keen on city breaks, but we went to Florence and it was just perfect. Not as busy as Rome, but not too quiet either.

We stayed in a hotel with a rooftop pool and fantastic views of the city. The weather was amazing, as was the food and wine. There is so much to do just a stones throw outside the city too - horse riding, wine tasting in Tuscany etc.

coffeeagogo · 10/02/2020 13:07

St Lucia - was wonderful, did lots of diving and have very fond memories

TheVanguardSix · 10/02/2020 13:08

I'd also add the Black Forest region of Germany.
Also kayaking through the canals of the Spreewald region of Germany (Lubbenau) and the Mecklenburg Lake District of Germany.

Oman. Beautiful place, lovely people you can do adventurous off reading stuff exploring the Wadis or kick back and relax. I chose the latter and just slept for the first two days. Utter luxury at the Shang Ri La, wish I was back there!

TheVanguardSix · 10/02/2020 13:10

Oh RachelTension I was JUST about to add Oman. I have never been. It's a place I would absolutely love to go to. I look longingly at images of it.

Maxamill · 10/02/2020 13:11

Singapore and then to Bali. Absolute dream, really want to go back!

Strictly1972 · 10/02/2020 13:11

Mauritius but it was expensive for what it was. In hindsight we should have used the budget and done a bit of a roadtrip in the states or Europe.
