Where did you go on your honeymoon?

DP and I are getting married in September and need to start planning our honeymoon. Where did you go and did you enjoy it? We are very open to all sorts of ideas from places in Europe to more long haul destinations. We aren’t so keen on city breaks and prefer being a bit off the beaten track (we’ll hire a car wherever we go).
We’ll also have a long weekend somewhere in the UK.
Thanks

Porthleven in Cornwall ( a place close to our hearts) but we took our 2yo DS. We finished a 1year travelling "gap year", 9 months before he was born...oops.

18 days in Japan! Tokyo, Kyoto, Mount Koya, Osaka, Hiroshima & Miyajima it was magical and so different to anywhere I've ever been. Everything from a bustling city to a serene stay in a Buddhist temple on a mountain top. The food was incredible too.

Hawaii. Couldn't recommend it more. It was truly wonderful.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/02/2020 13:13

South coast of Barbados - absolutely beautiful. Have already been back once and have another trip planned later this year.

A month long US road trip. Drove from SF down to the Grand Canyon, stopping at yosemite, all down the Pacific highway/Big Sur and LA and Vegas. Then a beach in South Carolina, then onto New York and Boston before flying home.
So much fun and I'm glad we did something more than sitting on a beach for a few weeks.

Caramel78 · 10/02/2020 13:13

@PrinnyPree we did Japan last year and loved it.
Keep the suggestions coming everyone. There have been some great ones so far and I’m adding them to my list to research later

Mauritius....it was incredible. We did take our kids, as no one would have them for 2 weeks and fortunately we quite like them 😁

Purplewithred · 10/02/2020 13:18

Costa Rica, was absolutely brilliant.

Oysterbabe · 10/02/2020 13:18

We went to Barbados. It was wonderful, paradise. I hope to go back once the rugrats are older.

bruffin · 10/02/2020 13:19

1 weeks Maldives then 1 week touring Sri Lanka

TheNoodlesIncident · 10/02/2020 13:20

Santorini, but we were married there. Week 1 with family and friends and we married at the end of that week, then they left the next day and we had another week on our own. Was very nice!

(I wouldn't go there now though and wish we'd been married in Corfu, but there you are. It was still good!)

Orlando, Florida for 16 days. We love theme parks and they have Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and Busch Gardens (although there is alot more to Orlando and the nearby areas than just theme parks). They have crystal clear natural springs, manatees, dolphin boat tours, kennedy space centre and the list goes on.

We've returned every year since our honeymoon - we keep saying we should go somewhere else but just can't bring ourselves to do it.

moooov · 10/02/2020 13:24

We went to Mauritius - we chose it as knew we wanted to try for a baby within 6 months of when we would be honeymooning and Mauritius was Zika free (a virus dangerous to baby, and recommended fo wait one year after visiting a Zola zone)

It was beautiful, locals were amazing and so so lovely. Plenty to do on the island, and it's small enough to be able to do all that it has to offer.

Hot weather, gorgeous blue sea, and food to die for!

We also looked at Vietnam as looked incredibly beautiful

Roomarmoset · 10/02/2020 13:27

We did Route 66 but went off track to see some extra places. Stayed in a mixture of hotels and airbnb's and it was absolutely amazing!

Twenty2 · 10/02/2020 13:29

Ikea. True story Grin

Yabadee · 10/02/2020 13:31

We get married next year and going to Maldives for honeymoon, I can’t wait!

BabyMoonPie · 10/02/2020 13:32

Hawaii and Las Vegas. Was amazing and wouldn't do anything differently given my time over

Workplaceworries · 10/02/2020 13:33

We did 26 days in Thailand, we traveled from the north to the south and then had the ultimate relaxing week on an island called Koh Lanta where it was just bliss! All in all cost about £4K and is go back in a heartbeat

Topseyt · 10/02/2020 13:37

It was 1993. We began with four (I think) days in Hong Kong, which in those days was still a British Colony, but soon to go back to China.

We then spent 10 days in the Maldives, which was wonderful, and we finished off by spending several days in Singapore, which we loved.

Hannahthepink · 10/02/2020 13:37

We had a September wedding and went Interailling around Europe for 3 weeks. We travelled through Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. We had it all planned out, so not like teenagers doing it, but it was so much fun! We had a mixture of luxury hotels, Air B&Bs etc, all pre-booked. It was nice and quiet in September, but the weather was still fab, esp further south.

SomeEnchantedEvening18 · 10/02/2020 13:38

Australia! Great Ocean Road Tour from Melbourne, and Hamilton Island! Hamilton Island was stunning and great opportunities for hikes up in the hills for amazing views over the Whitsundays, snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef and relaxing in absolute paradise!

EffRam · 10/02/2020 13:39

Norway - really recommend for a honeymoon! Absolutely stunning. We went straight after our October wedding.

MaMaMaMySharona · 10/02/2020 13:40

We got married last year and will be doing a RV tour of Alaska this June!

waterlego · 10/02/2020 13:40

We went to Scotland: Ayrshire. It rained all week (it was November) but we had a great time.

Defender90 · 10/02/2020 13:43
