Where did you go on your honeymoon?

DP and I are getting married in September and need to start planning our honeymoon. Where did you go and did you enjoy it? We are very open to all sorts of ideas from places in Europe to more long haul destinations. We aren’t so keen on city breaks and prefer being a bit off the beaten track (we’ll hire a car wherever we go).
We’ll also have a long weekend somewhere in the UK.
Thanks

French Polynesia - incredible

My first honeymoon we went to Orlando for 3wks. It was amazing, theme parks, restaurants, incredible beaches, I've been many times before (and since!) But this trip we really pushed the boat out! We went to the Maldives shortly after as we got a cheap last minute deal and it was gorgeous but I must admit I prefer Orlando due to the vast choice of things to do.

I got married again just over a year ago and am considerably older, poorer after a divorce and a baby and didn't want to leave DS long (12mths old). Me and DH had a wonderful night in our Wedding venue with hot tub followed by a night in a super posh Spa Hotel down the road, it was amazing. 5mths later we took DS to Disneyland Paris for a delayed honeymoon and had a fantastic time!

We did a similar road trip to @BigGreenBaskets - in to NYC, down to Washington DC, then flew to LA, picked up a car and went LA - Vegas - Yosemite - San Francisco. Was amazing and I'd do it again tomorrow if I had the cash.

Nowhere. Been married 5 years in April and still haven't had one

Whatthefunk · 10/02/2020 13:51

A week long cruise, around the Mediterranean. It was fabulous

Kn0ckOnTheDoor · 10/02/2020 13:54

mrsbyers · 10/02/2020 13:55

Week in New York then two weeks in Florida

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 10/02/2020 13:56

Another one here for Madeira. We stayed the first 3 nights in a teepee tent on a banana plantation, then an air bnb apartment in Funchal and finally in the Cliff Bay hotel. So much to do. Rainforest and lavada tours, hiking, great food and wine. Can highly recommend it and the weather was wonderful.

Pisa, Florence, Rome then a week in Positano

whatthehelldowecare · 10/02/2020 14:02

We're doing a week in Greece in a private villa with pool in the middle of nowhere straight after the wedding in July, and then a fortnight somewhere further afield - thinking Bali/Thailand at the start of next year.

professionalnomad · 10/02/2020 14:07

Slovenia - it was gorgeous

bellinisurge · 10/02/2020 14:10

Shropshire. Late summer. It was fantastic.

mrsBtheparker · 10/02/2020 14:12

York, half a day, couldn't afford more and it was in the days when weddings didn't put people into debt for years!

Kolo · 10/02/2020 14:14

Travelling round Thailand. Phi phi for Christmas, Bangkok for new year then trekking in chiang mai. Absolutely loved it - we got a bit of everything. Amazing beach/snorkelling holiday, huge city and then the waterfalls, Karen villages and trekking up north. I'll never forget staying over in Karen villages and stumbling upon mountain waterfalls. Felt like I had stepped into another world/life. It was a decade ago now, but I booked all the parts separately and it was definitely under £4k. The flights to Bangkok were the most expensive, then stuff in Thailand was really cheap.

cologne4711 · 10/02/2020 14:20

We went to Italy - a week in Florence and then a week in Verona and some travelling around by rail.

Long haul is nice, but weddings are quite tiring, although obviously nice tiring. Not having a 10+ hour flight was very welcome!

cologne4711 · 10/02/2020 14:22

(If you are happy to drive around Italy there are plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten track).

Some amazing holidays on this thread!
We had two weeks camping in Cornwall near Looe. It was the same time as the Fastnet Yacht race disaster. home.bt.com/news/on-this-day/august-14-1979-tragedy-strikes-the-fastnet-yacht-race-as-15-die-in-violent-storms-11363996706822

It was very wet, very windy and not very warm. We had a great time!
Truthfully, it's not where you have your honeymoon or how much you spend, but the love you share.

MinnieMountain · 10/02/2020 14:24

Walking in Austria, with a few days in Munich afterwards straight after our wedding. We travelled by train.

Then Fiskardo in Kefalonia for a week a few months later.

recrudescence · 10/02/2020 14:24

Prestatyn - long weekend in a static caravan.

FrangipaniBlue · 10/02/2020 14:26

Venice, Verona (one night for the opera) and Rome

LOVED it, particularly Venice and Verona

elc19 · 10/02/2020 14:28

Jamaica, couples swept away resort in Negril. Best place we have ever been. Total relaxation, plenty of excursions, the best food and just amazing!

MissConductUS · 10/02/2020 14:31

Block Island, Rhode Island:

It was lovely. We stayed at the National Hotel overlooking Old Harbor. Did lots of hiking and swimming. The seafood is fab, lots of great shops and restaurants.

Willow4987 · 10/02/2020 14:32

We also got married in the September and booked the honeymoon after the wedding

We went to Mexico in the following January

lancaster · 10/02/2020 14:39

Cook islands - more than worth the very long flight
