She's been the subject of criticism and vitriol all day about her dress, which she apparently wore to an earlier social event. She's a bright, lively and committed MP, who cares what she wears?

it stinks that women in politics are never just seen as the smart, engaged women they are.
If you are paying more attention to her dress than the words she speaks, you are the problem not her.

TheNewSchmoo · 05/02/2020 14:03

I don't agree with the inference from some about her character, or the abuse she was subjected to, but the HoP is effectively her place of work and the dress code where I work would also exclude that top.

Old fashioned? Maybe, but still the case in many workplaces.

saraclara · 05/02/2020 14:03

Most professional jobs have a dress code. I don't think she deserves the vitriol, but it's not a dress I'd wear to work. So I think it does suggest an error of judgement.

DeathByPuppy · 05/02/2020 14:04

The trolling she got for it is grim but I’m not convinced it was particularly professional business wear as it was, tbh. A jacket over the top would’ve made it better.

Urkiddingright · 05/02/2020 14:05

I don’t think she should be able to wear whatever she wants, no. If she turned up to work in fancy dress for example, it just wouldn’t be appropriate Grin. The shirt in question though was not inappropriate in any way.

MissEliza · 05/02/2020 14:06

I wouldn't wear something like that to work and I don't work somewhere as formal as the H of C. It was a bad choice.

ViaSacra · 05/02/2020 14:06

I wouldn’t wear that in my workplace. I don’t think it’s appropriate work-wear.

timetest · 05/02/2020 14:07

There is presumably a dress code for the House which that dress must have breached. Doesn’t deserve the level of abuse she received.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 05/02/2020 14:08

I don't think a naked shoulder is appropriate at work. I wouldn't expect a male MP to turn up in a vest/tank top.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 05/02/2020 14:09

I don't go into the office often but I would not wear that dress because it is inappropriate. If we want to be taken seriously as women we need to dress seriously and being an MP requires smart office attire. As actually do most school 6th forms and I don't think any school would find that dress appropriate. Similarly I would not find it approprate for a male MP to make a speech in a vest top.

Teafortwohundred · 05/02/2020 14:09

Personally I think it is inappropriate for work in that type of environment just as I would think it would be if a man turned up in a T shirt for example.

Lxx16 · 05/02/2020 14:09

I don't condone the abuse and hatred she has received at all however I would not be allowed to wear that for work. I'm a teacher and we have a dress code to follow, as do many other workplaces. I just don't think it's appropriate work wear but again, would never send her abuse for wearing it!

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 05/02/2020 14:09

Nobody deserves that level of vitriol but I do think her outfit was not appropriate.

formerbabe · 05/02/2020 14:09

I don't think it was appropriate but I don't think she deserves abuse for it...obviously.

FagAsh · 05/02/2020 14:10

Its an awful frock for work.
Would a man look ok in shorts?

But the abuse she received was absolutely dreadful

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/02/2020 14:11

Well, given that it's a dress and she has a freshly broken ankle form using public transport.... She wore it all day - same outfit, fancy that! - and had other appointments who cares? Seriously? Who has brain space for such shite?

Going to winge that she isn't wearing tights in this weather?

Fuck the fuck off!

Tellmetruth4 · 05/02/2020 14:11

Of course she doesn’t deserve abuse but it’s not professional business wear. She could’ve still worn it under a blazer. All those saying she can wear what she wants would raise eyebrows if their colleague turned up to work in a onesie or flip flops and short shorts.

Sirzy · 05/02/2020 14:12

To me it was no different to the criticism men get if they wear a tie with top button open and generally look scruffy which she did

TooleyVanDooley · 05/02/2020 14:13

It wasn’t appropriate for work.

KatyCarrCan · 05/02/2020 14:13

I think the problem is that if you're wearing something that you look as though you're going to fall out of, then it distracts your audience and hence detracts from your work. I don't think she should be pilloried for it. We've all had wardrobe malfunctions.

Alsohuman · 05/02/2020 14:17

In what way was it inappropriate? It bared one shoulder, nothing else. Her tweet was absolutely spot on.

Lottapianos · 05/02/2020 14:20

Not a fan of the dress but for the love of sanity, the utter STATE of Boris Johnson every single day, looking like Worzel Gummidge after being dragged through a hedge. And no one is calling him a slag or a minger

The world makes a lot more sense when you realise just how many people see women as trash

BarbaraofSeville · 05/02/2020 14:24

It probably wasn't appropriate dress for the situation, but I doubt man dressed a bit too casually would have received similar comments from the people in the bottom half of the internet, as Dave Gorman puts it.

formerbabe · 05/02/2020 14:26

In what way was it inappropriate?

Time and a place.

It wasn't inappropriate for a party but it was inappropriate for the HoP imo.

Just as a bikini isn't inappropriate for the beach or a pool but is inappropriate for the supermarket or an office.

Bright pink clothing isn't inappropriate generally for example but is inappropriate at a traditional funeral.

It's really simple to understand.

Growingboys · 05/02/2020 14:30

I wouldn't wear that to work and my office is way 'cooler' than the HoC.

Politicians represent us and I want them to represent us well, not let us down. She looked a mess.
