She's been the subject of criticism and vitriol all day about her dress, which she apparently wore to an earlier social event. She's a bright, lively and committed MP, who cares what she wears?

I was just coming on to comment about JC's anorak but someone beat me too it! he faced much worse comments at the time. Places of work have a dress code and work culture. Off the shoulder dress was not appropriate for the situation.

19lottie82 · 05/02/2020 16:47

Would you be saying the same thing if Boris rocked up in trackie bottoms and a football shirt?

RuffleCrow · 05/02/2020 16:48

As long as she's not breaking any public decency laws she can wear whatever she wants imo. Much more interested in what she does than what she wears. Having said that, seeing as she's Labour, maybe she should tell her party she now identifies as a man - that should stop the sexism, right? Hmm

Balkinfly · 05/02/2020 16:50

YABU she looked ridiculous.

OxfordCat · 05/02/2020 16:50

Uh FFS. We are stuck in the 1950's it seems. This thread is full of male chauvinist pigs and internalised misogynists. SHE WAS ATTENDING AN EVENT, PEOPLE! Got called into HoC last minute. And it's her fucking shoulder not her bum crack.

Urkiddingright · 05/02/2020 16:51

All those saying she can wear what she wants would raise eyebrows if their colleague turned up to work in a onesie or flip flops and short shorts.

I don’t think a black off the shoulder top is the same as wearing a onesie to work. She didn’t turn up wearing pyjamas ffs. She also was baring one shoulder, it’s a shoulder not her fanny.

People need to get a grip really, it’s not the 1800s.

Urkiddingright · 05/02/2020 16:53

I mean, the guy doesn’t even own a hairbrush so it wouldn’t really surprise me if he turned up like this to be perfectly honest.

I don’t think a black Bardot top is comparable to a tracksuit. You can’t even see one ounce of cleavage.

Balkinfly · 05/02/2020 16:56

AN EVENT, PEOPLE! Got called into HoC last minute. And it's her fucking shoulder not her bum crack.

Well women will not be taken seriously when they are dressed like they are off to the Ritzy.

Balkinfly · 05/02/2020 16:59

She was inappropriately dressed for the setting, so the visuals drowned out her message. Man or woman, it makes no odds.

This in bucket loads.

Nat6999 · 05/02/2020 16:59

Why is it only the female Labour MP's who get slagged off for their clothing & hair colour? Louise Haigh is my MP & she regularly gets trolled for her bright red hair. Boris can turn up looking like a cross between Coco the clown & Wurzel Gummage & not a word is said about him.

Sagradafamiliar · 05/02/2020 17:00

It's a plain black dress, I would never have given it a second glance if it weren't for the fact it's made the news (or the abuse she's received because of it has). Utterly pathetic people out there. Beyond sad.

saraclara · 05/02/2020 17:02

How many times does it have to be said? Boris's appearance has been being criticised for years. It's ridiculous to say that "not a word is said about him"

MaggieAndHopey · 05/02/2020 17:03

I think it was inappropriate for most workplaces, and especially for the house of commons. I'm a feminist, I think women should wear what they want, but I also think all people should dress appropriately for the work they do.

PhilCornwall1 · 05/02/2020 17:03

No please!!!! I've just visions of him bending over to reveal a builders smile in his trackies!! Envy

Orchidflower1 · 05/02/2020 17:04

Yep!! All she needs is a jacket on the hook on the back of her office door kept there for events such as this.
I’d say the same about a bloke keeping a tie in a drawer.

jeanne16 · 05/02/2020 17:04

Angela Merkel wears a kind of uniform that works for her. As a result, no one ever comments on her clothes and she is taken just as seriously as male leaders. To me, she is a role model for how women in business should dress.

Jomarchsburntskirt · 05/02/2020 17:06

I think it’s hard enough for women in her position to be taken seriously by patronising males but for her to dress like that just compounds any thoughts of her not being taken seriously. I don’t have an opinion on her ability as an MP as I don’t know anything about her. I do work in a very male world though. I always dress in business attire because I want to be taken seriously. I don’t think wearing an off the shoulder outfit is in any way appropriate for the House of Commons or any other place of employment. Unfortunately women are judged much more harshly than men. Boris and Corbyn come to work looking like a sack of shit. Personally it makes me think their scruffy and uncared for appearances reflect their attitude towards their work. I think anyone at work should look smart and reflect their role. Tracey is being very naive if she thinks it doesn’t matter.

Violetparis · 05/02/2020 17:06

I like her as a politician but it wasn't appropriate dress for the HoC. A colleague should have lent her a jacket or cardigan to wear as they surely could have seen it was not appropriate, and likely to attract negative criticism. Or, she could have told the truth, that she dashed there from a previous, more informal engagement.

DesLynamsMoustache · 05/02/2020 17:09

What a load of depressing shite on this thread. Women are our own worst enemies sometimes.

Violetparis · 05/02/2020 17:10

Some on here are asking why it is inappropriate, it's a party, informal dress in a formal, professional setting.

Cadenza12 · 05/02/2020 17:15

Didn't look professional to me. Dress for the job. Unless you want to be the news? Perhaps that was the point!

CwtchesCuddles · 05/02/2020 17:17

I don't agree with all the hate and trolling but that dress was not appropriate. She should have put a jacket on.

SimonJT · 05/02/2020 17:20

It may not have been ‘professional’ looking, but she hadn’t expected to be in the HOC that day. Would you all go out everyday in business clothing in case you’re called in and don’t have time to go home?

Where I work you only have to wear business attire if you have a meeting that day, otherwise wear what you wish. I have had the odd occasion when I have been unexpectedly called into a meeting so I’ve been in sweat shorts and a t-shirt, it has zero impact on my capability. They’re just clothes.

cologne4711 · 05/02/2020 17:24

She was in her workplace and should be dressed for the workplace. I don't think showing a shoulder like that is appropriate. That may make me horribly old-fashioned. I don't care. Presumably at this time of year she had a cardigan or jumper with her, so she could have worn that if she wasn't expecting to be in parliament.

I don't like shoulders though. Even when I run, I never wear a running vest unless I've got a t-shirt underneath.

And yes I would judge a man too if he came to work eg wearing flipflops and exposing his ugly hairy toes.

Sirzy · 05/02/2020 17:24

Surely if she knew she may be called in at any point then keeping a jacket in her office would make sense? Much the same as men keep a tie in their drawer.

If someone was in the gym when called would turning up in gym gear be acceptable?
