How much have you spent on concert tickets?

Not so much an AIBU, posting here for traffic! I’ve got to the age of 36 due to various medical conditions, I’ve never been to an actual music concert. I went to watch my daughter at the Manchester arena the other night ( young voices) it was brilliant! I looked up a few people playing, and was quite surprised at the price of tickets. Out of interest who did you watch, where and how much were your tickets? Thank you ;)

Stalls at the Royal Opera House - much cheaper than some of these!

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/02/2020 18:15

DD went to Slipknot at the Hydro in Glasgow, I think it was around £60, but way up.
TBF you get a great view from anywhere in there.
I bought her Catfish and the Bottlemen tickets for a similar price.

cactus2020 · 04/02/2020 19:04

Bought tickets for a gig with my teens at Manchester Arena. It was worth every penny (3 X £80) to have that shared experience with them... These memories are often worth much more than 'things'.

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/02/2020 19:57

That's what we do now, concerts, meals out, days out etc.
It's much better than "stuff".

TheGhostOfYou · 04/02/2020 22:09

@ItsAlwaysSunnyInPhiladelphia Hello & thank you! I've never got the chance to see them live as a teen before they split, so I am ridiculously excited! Grin

DollyDoneMore · 04/02/2020 22:19

Don’t think I’ve ever spent more than about £30 to see one artist (more for festivals etc.) Can’t imagine why you’d want to spend hundreds of pounds to watch an artist you like on a big TV screen because you’re so far away from the stage in a football stadium or massive arena.

OwlBeThere · 05/02/2020 11:50

@OldHarrysGameboy I don’t think anyone is saying opera isn’t great for those that like it, but an opera will run for more than 1/2 nights in a given area.
And, the fact is, modern music has a greater demand so it cost money to see the bigger acts.
Personally the kinds of music I like tends to me smaller lesser known bands who charge less/smaller venues. But for a band like the chili peppers who I’ve loved since I was 10 im more than ok with the price tag. What stirs your soul is different for everyone.

OwlBeThere · 05/02/2020 11:53

@DollyDoneMore in one word, atmosphere. Even if you’re far from the stage a good artist will still draw you in and the excitement is there.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/02/2020 12:36

I paid around £150 each for 2 tickets to Bruce Springsteen at Wembley in 2016. It was the most I'd ever paid and worth every penny!

ShatnersWig · 05/02/2020 12:56

Owl many operas don't run for that many nights because you can't sing that sort of stuff night after night. The point is more that a lot of people regard opera as ridiculously expensive but very often it really is not when you compare the sheer number of people involved.

Cheapest seat, back row, of the o2 Arena for Simply Red is £74 before fees. The Arena seats 20,000. So, handful of performers, some techies and some roadies.

I can get seats in the gods at Covent Garden, still nearer the stage in terms of visibility, for an opera involving a cast and orchestra of over 100 before techies and roadies for half that.

I work in a live music venue so I see a lot of shows for free now. Weirdly I find it quite hard to switch off from work and actually enjoy myself when I'm in the audience! Back in the early 00s when I started going to concerts, the maximum I would pay would be around £40 but you'd barely even get in the car park for that amount now!

Grinchbinch · 05/02/2020 13:10

Most I've paid is £70 per ticket to see spice girls (friend bought tickets and I got hotel but worked out about the same cost). Neutral Milk Hotel were quite close to that, the ticket itself was 40 quid but I ended up spending a lot on merchandise Crown Blush I think Deftones tickets were also close to that when you take inflation into account, the tickets were 35 quid each 15 years ago.

I usually pay £0 as I'm lucky to live somewhere with an outstanding live music scene and a culture of free entry, that said, I will often pay £5-10 to see a punk band in my local venue, average about 7 quid I'd say.

OldHarrysGameboy · 06/02/2020 00:01

@IHaveBrilloHair absolutely check out the cinema screenings - you might enjoy it! If you don't live near a big arts venue it's a good way of seeing top performers.

I do go to rock etc concerts as well and used to go to Glastonbury every year - I like all kinds of music. But I still remember the first time I saw a good professional orchestra, 80 or so top flight musicians at the height of their powers, the energy and focus and purposeful buzz hit me like a wave of brilliance in my little home town's shabby town hall where an inventive promoter had persuaded them to be. And that's before even considering the amazing musical journey I went on with them that night. It was like that bit in the wizard of oz where you go from black and white to technicolour, really.

ultrablue · 06/02/2020 08:59

Think the most I've spent so far was £90ish for Muse, well worth it and about the same for Robbie Williams who puts on an amazing show.

Prices make me feel old now as my first gig was Duran Duran back in the 80's for £4 Inc booking fee haha.

I'm lucky enough to live just a few miles from three big venues so don't have to travel far although it will have to be someone special to drag me to the Ricoh arena getting there is a nightmare traffic wise.

Don't go to as many gigs as we used to due to costs and the DC sharing our taste in music now, but I have been lucky enough to see my favourite bands at least once.

There are bands though that I will always see every tour they do no matter how much tickets will cost me, I couldn't imagine missing a Depeche Mode tour for instance.

CameFromAway · 06/02/2020 09:17

Took DD to see George Ezra and it was about £50 a ticket.
It was a great night, but I admit to thinking “we could be watching Hamilton for that money”
😉

80sMum · 07/02/2020 22:33

I've never been to a concert, other than classical music performances in the local church.
But I did spend £600 in 2012 for 2 tickets to the paralympics opening ceremony! I figured it was something that I would only ever do once in my life, so was worth it for the experience.

NothingLeftToInheritDarlings · 08/02/2020 01:54

£205 each to see my own child in a concert. Worth every penny!

binkyblinky · 08/02/2020 02:24

Hubby spent £600 for two tickets to see my favourite band, Metallica a couple of Christmasses ago. Ridiculous price! It was also in Lisbon, Portugal. Nothing special didn't get to meet the band or anything. Just a resale ticket. Bonkers price but it was the 11th time seeing them and they were incredible

whoami24 · 08/02/2020 02:32

I'm a Madonna fan so spent a lot on tickets. Paid £500 each to see her at palladium tonight, but a unique chance to see her in a small theatre.

First time I saw her was £25 in 1993 but she was so far away.

Been lucky last few tours as always been in first 5 rows and not had to pay vip prices.

BritWifeinUSA · 08/02/2020 04:27

My best bargain was Guns N Roses tickets in 2017. $30 each. Special promotion to celebrate 30 years since the release of Appetite For Destruction. There were a very limited number for 30 bucks each and I grabbed two. Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

joystir59 · 08/02/2020 04:53

Rolling Stones, Man U arena, 2019, approx £100 each. Worth every penny.
