To wonder why so many people are hostile to 'woke' things?

malificent7 · 01/02/2020 18:46

Isn't the definition...aware of and against injustice in society especially racism?
Why are so many turning against progressive attitudes atm and aibu to think people almost revel in political incorrectness nowadays?
Megan and Harry are criticised for being too 'woke' as she does yoga and they like animals etc.
Likewise millenuals are sneered at for being woke and snowflakey.
Well i am proud to be woke...better than the opposite.

The real issue with The Woke is that their virtue signalling fervour means Donald Trump is unequivocally right about one thing...

easyandy101 · 02/02/2020 10:04

I don't think the woke are nice to others

But it's always the worst examples that are used to illustrate any kind of movement. Political correctness and wokeness are used as a stick to beat people with

The flip side of woke are the people who want to defend our free speech by pretending we don't have free speech.

In between these positions are the majority of decent people, but they're boring to talk about in our apparently polarised world

hamstersarse · 02/02/2020 10:07

@PositiveVibez

Did you see her video about the labour manifesto?

Woke crying

www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/lily-allen-reduced-to-tears-as-she-praises-jeremy-corbyns-radical-labour-manifesto-a4293166.html

corduroyal · 02/02/2020 10:12

Woke = challenging a system built on inequality and exploitation

We've been living with these inequalities so long that we no longer see them, woke means you think critically for yourself

Ok a few young fools might get it a bit awry but better that they try than they just continue as mindless consumers

People who use terms like virtue signalling, snowflake, woke in a negative sense are just having a knee jerk reaction to their privilege being challenged

So much hostility to this is about insecurity over our ability to live comfortable lives with foreign holidays, throwaway clothes etc while others scrape by without the same opportunities

It's basically an age-old battle between youth seeing unfairness and conservatives clinging to what they've 'earned'

Same as it ever was Grin

hamstersarse · 02/02/2020 10:16

Yawn. Yawn. Yawn.

That is such a lazy argument. Do you really think Alistair Stewart is racist and has just been challenged successfully on his years of hidden white privilege?

Do me a favour

karencantobe · 02/02/2020 10:17

Wokeness for me is summed up by a new colleague I have. He is a young gay man who uses preferred pronouns on his emails and brings up at every opportunity in meetings about how we should better meet the needs of the LGBT community.
He obviously assumes he is the only gay in the workplace. In reality there are two older gay people who will have experienced far more discrimination than him, at least one of whom has been politically active. The sight of this young man lecturing his older gay colleagues that they should consider the needs of LGBT clients is eye rolling.

BoneyBackJefferson · 02/02/2020 10:19

chomalungma has posted what I consider to be classic "woke"

It's good to see different representation on TV and in the media. I
wonder how many people on here complain about Dr Who or there being more diversity on TV shows.

You must like Dr Who because "Diversity" if not you are a racist, sexist misogynist. It doesn't matter how bad the scripts or acting are, you must like it because woke.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 10:19

He was probably brought up post section 28 and hasn’t actually come across actual laws that discriminate. It’s almost as if they feel that they have missed out on something ‘real’ and need to make a big song and dance about every perceived injustice.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 02/02/2020 10:21

I’ve blamed it on this before but Twitter really has a lot to answer for for all this backlash and identity politics. I’ve never known a single website to change the shape of journalism (and therefore politics) the world over.

It really is the very definition of an echo chamber. Newspapers base whole articles these days around tweets. Twitter has ended careers, forced companies into changing policies (often for the worse), has got people thrown in jail or losing their jobs, even forcing Hollywood studios to stop production on films and scrap the movie altogether and the woke pat themselves on the back and move onto the next person or people who do something they disapprove of.

I’ve never known a website to have so much power. Especially because the majority of the world doesn’t use it (although that in itself explains why woke Twitter gets politics results sooooo wrong, because they are convinced “their side” are going to win and believe it because “everyone agrees with them” I.e. anyone who doesn’t agree with them has already been blocked anyway).

And rant over.

EvaHarknessRose · 02/02/2020 10:21

It's like a game and people are scrambling to demonstrate their credentials, all the while getting more and more aggressive in their denigration of others, and ultimately more and more scared of putting a foot wrong. The world is complex and full of grey areas. We can't sort it out. But free speech, debate, critical thinking skills and sensible laws help us live together.

donquixotedelamancha · 02/02/2020 10:24

But it's always the worst examples that are used to illustrate any kind of movement. Political correctness and wokeness are used as a stick to beat people with

As I said upthread, there will be idiots who tar genuine decency as woke, but that's not what most people use it for. OJ isn't oft cited just because he's bad but because he's visible and typical.

The current use of the word only exists because of the new phenomenon it describes. 15 years ago the idea of trying to silence fairly moderate but controversial views amongst academics and politicians would have been laughable

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 02/02/2020 10:27

@1Morewineplease
“I have RTFT and googled woke’ yet I still don’t understand what it means.
It sounds like it means that champagne socialists are always right?!
Does it really matter if you’re Woke?’
Should I be ‘woke?’
Why shouldn’t I be ‘woke?’”

Yes, you should be woke and if you’re not, then block me right now because I have no time for ignorant racists and homophobes. I WILL NOT DEBATE ON THIS. (Please Like this post if you agree)

^^ That’s woke.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 10:27

No - that what was we called debate when I was a student. We weren’t wringing our hands and weeping at the angst of the tapeworm.

lemonysnickett88 · 02/02/2020 10:27

The things I object to are overcorrections, which you see a lot of on social media. People acting so desperate to be 'woke' that they become ludicrous. Like on Twitter when people seem to think that feminism means it's ok to call men trash, and that because of Me Too we must believe all women, no matter what. Even when we know there are women who falsely accuse.

Generally things like being vegan etc I don't deem to be woke, I just admire them and they are necessary considering how our planet is being affected.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 10:28

And the backtracking and reversals depending on what the group think say.

‘You can’t say/think that!’
‘Oops I am so sorry, I will re-educate myself, can you ever forgive me?’

lemonysnickett88 · 02/02/2020 10:31

I get fed up on Twitter when I constantly see 'that's such a white person thing to do/white trash' etc etc. Yet when I politely asked why this was OK (because if I did this then I would be vilified) I was attacked, and told that because we enslaved people that it's ok for white people to be made fun of. To me, it's not ok to generalise like that about any race and I find it very odd. I legitimately wasn't attacking, I wanted to be educated, but people just have to be vile.

hamstersarse · 02/02/2020 10:35

Oops I am so sorry, I will re-educate myself, can you ever forgive me?

That is a very serious problem with the woke. Once they have found a ‘crime’ there is no forgiveness, no nuance, no chance for redemption. It’s total cancellation of that person for something they said

louderthan1 · 02/02/2020 10:44

Woke actually derives from the African American phrase 'stay woke'. Merriam-Webster defines it as 'aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues, especially issues of racial and social justice'. I don't really see how anyone can object to that.
It's definitely not a woolly lefty white liberal thing, although I do agree that it's overused by virtue signallers who can't be bothered to do any of the critical thinking for themselves. And it does get thrown around as a put-down by people on the defensive after being challenged on their dog-whistle racism.

I've posted this before but this video explains it really well

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 02/02/2020 10:46

Dunno about that, Hamster, Debra Messing seems to be have been forgiven after an embarrassing amount of grovelling.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/mar/12/debra-messing-apologizes-after-vagina-cupcakes-off/

“Actress and liberal activist Debra Messing apologized this week after her Instagram photo of cupcakes decorated as vulvas offended members of the trans community.

The “Will & Grace” star celebrated International Women’s Day on Friday by posting a photo showing a dozen cupcakes decorated as vulvas in varying colors, shapes and sizes.

“Powerful, beautiful, and sweet,” Ms. Messing wrote.”

“The actress later amended the post after members of the trans community apparently complained.

“I want to apologize to my trans sisters,” Ms. Messing wrote. “This photo was supposed to be light, & sassy. The first thing I thought when I saw this photo was ‘wow how wonderful. Each one is unique in color and shape and size.’”

“I loved that this picture said ‘every single one is beautiful and unique and that’s powerful.’ I did not, however, think ‘but there are innumerable beautiful, unique and powerful women who don’t have a vagina.’ And I SHOULD have. And for that I am so so sorry.

“Thank you for righting my wrong,” she added.”

🤮🤮

hamstersarse · 02/02/2020 10:57

The fact she had to apologise in the first place just bends my head ShockConfused

AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 11:37

oh, why did Debra apologise?

"woke" - not a word I'd equate with the David Icke followers.

also no link to age.

The stuff some of my colleagues think is really quite something, but like many organisations, mine is pushing a "woke" agenda.

they never quite know what to do what someone of colour disagrees with them.

They were talking about English names being given to children around the time I was born, saying how offensive it was. I said that a lot of people did it as a tribute to the host country, to show they were happy to integrate and that I wish my parents had done that for me.

I was greeted by shocked faces - they just don't know where to put themselves when their wokeness doesn't please the person they thought they would please.

AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 11:49

BAFTA noms are out

more "disappointment at lack of diversity".

Fuck's sake.

AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 11:55

in terms of having gone backwards

1995 - Sense & Sensibility - Ang Lee won so many awards. No mention of race.

bit later - Brokeback Mountain - Ang Lee won so many awards. No mention of race.

the Elizabeth films directed by Shekhar Kapur - no mention of race. (though I do wonder if he got told not to deal in English history).

now look where we are! Insanity.

Formermousemat · 02/02/2020 12:04

I dislike the word 'woke' but I've got no problem with most so called 'progressive' concepts.

What I don't like is companies or celebrities cashing in on so called 'woke' values in order to sell their products. That's horrible.

LeguLego · 02/02/2020 12:05

My experience of woke people, as a traveller woman, has been hostility and ignorance.
I've never met one who gives one shiny fuck about the issues and oppression that travellers face or one who even has a clue what those issues are ( a lot of them don't even believe we are a separate ethnic group at all, they believe we don't exist!)
When I've tried to bring up the issues facing my community I just end up getting shouted down with "WHITE PRIVILEGE!". These people don't even bother to look up the stats regarding educational outcomes, incarceration, life expectancy, age demographics etc of travellers. They know nothing of our history, nothing of the oppression we have faced and continue to face but yet feel qualified to tell us we should shut up.

I'm sick of the silencing the woke are so fond of.
