Isn't the definition...aware of and against injustice in society especially racism?
Why are so many turning against progressive attitudes atm and aibu to think people almost revel in political incorrectness nowadays?
Megan and Harry are criticised for being too 'woke' as she does yoga and they like animals etc.
Likewise millenuals are sneered at for being woke and snowflakey.
Well i am proud to be woke...better than the opposite.

Tanith I think it's a lot different. PC didn't require that anyone be put in a tiny tiny box according to a specific set of criteria.

leckford · 02/02/2020 15:48

There was a program on R4 after the news today, I listened whilst driving home. Called The Purity Spiral it was about all the kinds of insanity generated by the whole woke, white privilege nonsense. It was, you won’t believe it about Knitting!

I think it was true, however with all I have seen with all the snarling woke warriors you never know

Nice man who knits wanted to be more inclusive, so invited more people to join him on, I think Instagram. It ended in tears with all the different woke nutters out virtue signalling each other and insulting the poor man driven to near nervous breakdown.

Moral of story do you own thing and ignore the nutters

BlindYeoSees · 02/02/2020 15:51

Because some woke ideas are regressive not progressive as they claim.

The hypocrisy of some of the virtue signalling woke. Lots of recycling then jumping on a transatlantic plane

The way the purity spiral is used to hurt and bully people.

The woke tend to sneer at the white working class/underclass. One of the few groups of people left you are allowed to be prejudiced against. Classism.

derxa · 02/02/2020 15:55

We are in a ridiculous situation where titans who have achieved enormous steps forwards for the rights of disadvantaged groups are being silenced by pipsqueeks who do nothing but announce their virtue and spout bile. That is being woke. Yes and 'no platforming' of people like Germaine Greer. It's actually shameful.

Spidey66 · 02/02/2020 15:55

To me, 'woke was something I did this morning. I don't get this new fangled meaning.

AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 15:59

Blind "Because some woke ideas are regressive not progressive as they claim."

yes, hence I'm suddenly being defined by the colour of my skin when I thought that battle had stopped more than 25 years ago.

doolallylala · 02/02/2020 17:20

you want to see woke in action, I'm on another thread about Amber & Johnny... One of my points is "cancelled" because some of the language in the articles I linked too (didn't write) is problematic. It's exhausting!

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/02/2020 17:29

Really doolally? I’m going to have to go back and see if any of my posts have been “deplatformed” for quoting “right wing fascist propaganda”

doolallylala · 02/02/2020 17:31

I've internalised homophobia apparently 😆

RedSheep73 · 02/02/2020 17:32

A lot of people are racist/sexist/Tory bastards etc etc, and now they've all been empowered to be as bastardy as they want.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 02/02/2020 17:32

I am not sure where “woke” came from. In mind it describes some narrow minded, young, self righteous so called liberal leftie who tends to scream “I’m offended” or “that’s a hate crime” when anything remotely controversial is discussed

doolallylala · 02/02/2020 17:34

didn't require that anyone be put in a tiny tiny box according to a specific set of criteria.

Yes! I feel there are more labels these days & you have to put in a box, that's regressive.

CendrillonSings · 02/02/2020 17:45

At least no one can accuse you of false advertising! Grin

Newmetoday · 02/02/2020 17:45

I can’t stand Woke people. They have a ‘do as I say’ mentality that is irritating. You see a lot of it on here

FiremanSlam · 02/02/2020 17:50

My issue with "woke" is how unthinking it is. It's a superficial stand against a perceived injustice. It takes an issue, demands fairness, but rarely takes into account of the logistics of how that fairness will be achieved, or if that unfairness is actually able to made fair given other circumstances. So being "woke" seems to be about not much more than making a statement, attention seeking, and being "cool"- this makes the whole thing problematic.

And actually, people who honestly care about social/environmental injustices will do what they can to help overcome these issues without needing to be given a title of being "woke" or recognition of what they have done. They do it because they genuinely care rather than for social media likes.

IrmaFayLear · 02/02/2020 17:56

What started off with good intentions has been hijacked by a particularly vocal group of people. It has become a kind of blood sport to root out anyone "guilty" of mis-speaking, no matter how long ago. It's the thrill of the "gotcha" moment; the pleasure of being one of the crowd baying for blood. Frankly I can quite understand how burning of witches happened, or how large crowds gathered at hangings or cheered at the guillotine.

IrmaFayLear · 02/02/2020 18:04

Incidentally, has anyone read about the US novel, American Dirt, which was an Oprah book club choice, but has now hit the skids as the "woke" have decided its subject matter - a Mexican woman's immigration struggle - is cultural appropriation as the writer is not Mexican. The author has had to cancel book tour and even have police protection.

The next thing will be trawling through every book ever published to identify if the author lived the life of the novel's subject matter. We're not going to be left with much.

TheRealMcKenna · 02/02/2020 18:12

Because Woke people divide the world into two neat groups: Woke people and fascists.

It means they are totally unable to tell real fascists from people with different opinions from them. The word is almost meaningless now.

AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 18:14

Irma yes

Like Lionel
Shrivel got cancelled for objecting to her publisher diversity questionnaire

TheRealMcKenna · 02/02/2020 18:15

IrmaFayLear yes, I’ve read about that. I think something similar happened with Lionel Shriver a few years ago.

Ironically, my username comes from a fictional book character with a disability. The author wrote the book using my experiences with the condition. I hope the Woke brigade don’t come after her!

TheRealMcKenna · 02/02/2020 18:16

X post Autumn

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/02/2020 18:25

It's an absolutely standard mob thing, isn't it? I was once caught in a crowd (before a Who concert at the Roundhouse) and nearly trampled underfoot when the doors opened and people surged forwards so that I fell; I am quite sure none of the people in that crowd would have intended to kill anyone, but they came close to doing it even so. (Thank the lord for large policemen, and for railings by the steps that I could cling to and pull myself up by.)

You used to see it at football matches, too, before a lot of people did get killed and the rules about seating were introduced.

I think it is just that as soon as people stop being individuals and start to be One Of A Crowd, they cease to think and start to behave instead, particularly if they can convince themselves that they are in the right and fighting against something everyone agrees is bad. For example, a crowd of very self-righteous people made a mistake about a word: they couldn't tell paediatrician from paedophile... www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/vigilante-mob-attacks-home-of-paediatrician-710864.html

lazylinguist · 02/02/2020 18:26

On the Radio 4 thing I mentioned upthread, YA fiction authors seemed to be getting 'cancelled' for even attempting to write about characters from any type of minority group or even other nationality to which the author didn't belong. It really makes you realise people can't win. If you're a white, MC, NT, heterosexual author and you write about white, MC, NT, heterosexual characters, you risk getting slammed for not making your books diverse enough. But if you write about diverse characters, you risk getting slammed for trying to portray the lived experience of being in a minority group you shouldn't possibly dare to presume you understand. Yes, being white, MC, NT and heterosexual makes you privileged in many ways. But does that really mean you should be prevented from writing books about anybody?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/02/2020 18:27

Actually, isn't "woke" just another word for "vigilante"?

Dancingontheedge · 02/02/2020 18:33

I’m almost 60, which is relevant.
I see ‘woke’ as the latest label for something the young have done every generation, or every decade.
Passionate, hugely protective in championing minorities and the underdog, lacking critical thinking or a sense of proportion or perspective, endorsing Good Thinking and What’s Right and promoting it continuously whether others are interested or not.
It was me in the 7Os, and now DD is Woke.
I’d rather that than indifference, but I encourage accessing a variety of sources. Mostly I just listen.
